Guest guest
Thanks to those who replyed about my husband who is 54 and has sleep apnea that caused his low Testosterone. The more i read online the more confused i am. If anyone could help answer some questions i have i would appreciate it.Right now my husband is seeing an endocronologist. Who prescribed angdrogel 5mg.and wants him to come back in 5 weeks. He hasnt started it yet because hes nervous about the side effects so im trying to do some research on all this. According to what i read your suppose to have a recent psa test and prostate exam. well my husband had one in 2006 and one in 2007. I told the dr. this and she thought it was ok....does anyone think this is ok? Because that isnt recent to me. Im thinking he needs new tests. What do you think? Ive been reading about bioidentical hormones does anyone know if endocrinologist and or what drs. use these hormones and if so does insurance cover it? so, far ive only seen ones that are out of pocket and the costs are expensive. Also, this androgel,,,,im nervous because it seems like if I come into contact with this stuff thats on his body I could get affected by it. Which doesnt make me feel too comfortable. Does anyone use a patch in this group? if so how does it work for you? Im not really sure how good his absorption will be since I was told by this group that he might have thick skin because of having sleep apnea. Thanks in advance for your help,,,this group is a real godsend. Mysticgrl
Guest guest
I used the patch when it first came out problem with it is it does not stay on and if it does when you take it off it leaves a red rash that need HC cream to heal it's just a big pain to use. There are no sides I know of using Androgel except that Dr.'s start one on a low dose and don't do follow up labs to check to see the gel is working. They put men on it and tell them to come back in 4 to 12 weeks. One needs to check Testosterone levels in 2 weeks to be sure levels are going up not going lower. When a men adds Testosterone to his body his brain sees it and stops sending the LH and FSH messages to his testis and they stop making Testosterone so if the gel dose is not enough he can end up lower. Guest guest
the worries about having it come off and affect you: -The main worry is with kids and baby making, if you have neither issues, I would guess it would be ok. The whole bio-identical hormone thing:Most of the hormones should be really cheap if you get the bio-identical, which is ironic because the people who want to treat you with them want insane amounts of money. I had a dr. who I contacted call me back and pitch to me a 2800 dollar one full day consultation, along with $695 to have a phlebotomist come to my house. You can contact a compounding pharmacy close to you and ask them how to transfer your prescription to them. they can make a 10% strength gel, which means you only put a little dab on instead of covering half your body with goop. I have sleep apnea also, and I am completely used to it. If I just recently started using a cpap, I would probably feel like having to wear that thing and remember to put on androgel every day would be a little much. I have had two shots of testosterone, in the butt I barely felt it. Going on testosterone should help the sleep apnea, because his night sweats will not be an issue. waking up covered in sweat wearing a mask is a little rough. There is also the possibility of losing a little weight on a good amount of testosterone. I am also off the high blood pressure meds since starting the testosterone and arimidex. Guest guest
Not sure what you mean by " bio-identical " . Androgel and Testim contain the same testosterone that his body produces (yours too, but in smaller amounts). I'm on Testim. I wear clothing over the areas of coverage. I keep a t-shirt on during our " alone time " . It's really a non-issue to me. I might feel different in the summer, but I don't see a problem. The gels are expensive. My understanding is that injectables are generic and very cheap. Others prefer them in terms of convenience and efficacy. Maybe someone else can speak to this point. I'd like to know because they may be in my future as well. > > Thanks to those who replyed about my husband who is 54 and has sleep apnea that caused his low Testosterone. Guest guest
About prostate... He should get his PSA checked every year if he's over 40. He's probably due anyway if he's younger, but don't look at it like he's setting a fuse on a time bomb. I'd probably go ahead with the doc's suggestions and schedule an appointment to get my PSA check in the near future. > > Thanks to those who replyed about my husband who is 54 and has sleep apnea that caused his low Testosterone. Guest guest
All Testosterone sold for men on TRT is bio-identical or made from Yams. I don't care what you use it is all made from Yams and them Places that say they only use bio-identical Testosterone of bio-identical hormones it good to use them for E's but for Testosterone it all made from the same Yams. Take your pick gels, creams, patch's, pellets or shots it's all made from Yams and saying it's bio-identical and charging you more money for them is a rip off. Guest guest
I have some of the same problems as your husband. I'm 40. I have sleep apnea. I use a CPAP nightly. Aside from a small wrinkle by my nose it may be causing I think it's a God send. Other people don't like CPAPs. I used the patch along time ago. It did leave a small red mark but it was not uncomfortable for me. In the end it did not prove very effective at bringing my scores up. For the last 8 years I've used Androgel. Using this my scores have always been at the low normal level. I am at a point where I want them in the high normal range. I got implants last November. Only augmenting them w/ Androgel did my scores shoot up where I want them. I say this to say, I finally got tired of paying $259.27 a month for Androgel (insurance helped a little) and had a pharmacy compound bio-identical testosterone. The total was $39.28. I nearly fell on the floor when I realized how cheap the bio-identical was. I'm no expert. Philip probably knows more than I do but it's my understanding that Androgel and some other gels/creams are not bio-identical. They are chemical and your body has to convert them into T. That's why bio-identical say they are different your body does not have to convert it. When my pellets finally dissolve I plan to use injections. Everyone else I read about does this and it seems to work. I guess in the end that's what I'd suggest to you. I think it's pretty inexpensive, not really sure at this point and you don't have to worry about him transferring to you.

Guest guest
Thanks Philip. The first site following your link has an unbelievable amount of info. I don't think any of us aspire to become female, the topic of the site, but it has a lot of info on testosterone. I assume all the info is correct. I haven't read the whole thing. http://www.ftmguide.org/ttypes.html
