Guest guest
I'm not sure if I have a 'valid' memory problem or whether the memory stuff is a result of the thyroid hassles. I guess the other thing is that everyone thinks that memory problems are JUST because of dementia / alzheimers, however memory can be affected in all sorts of ways if particular parts of the brain are damaged, etc. I just wish I knew why I can't remember things )0:P Hi P I also thought I was getting senile dementia in my 50s as couldn't remember anything, had trouble getting my words out, I spoke a good gobblygook and also slurred, it was all very embarrassing as the family didn't understand and I defiantly didn't know what was coming out of my mouth next. So I hibernated to save showing myself up. But take heart. I was made well again by luckily finding Dr Skinner and now taking 200mgs Thyroxin together with 2 grains of Armour Thyroid, although if I get really tired after doing too much the slurring can return. So its a matter of knowing ones own limits. So don't worry P you will get well again. No NHS Dr/consultant would treat me because my TSH level was 2.5, 'so called Normal' However. Dr S had full bloods tested for T3 & T4 which measured 10, bottom of the range. I now receive Thyroxin on NHS prescription but purchase the Armour privatly. Hope this helps you realize that help is round the corner for your illness. Love Ina
Guest guest
A friend's mother has Alzheimer like symptoms but her dementia is caused by several minor strokes which have damaged her brain each time. Guest guest
Hello P I know that others have responded to you but I wanted to respond as well because I absolutely understand what you are going through. I was very very frightened - I thought that I had dementia - I remember being in a meeting and feeling that I had not a clue what was going on - I was amazed that other people seemed to understand and I just could not grasp it at all! My GP said it was depression, along with every other symptom that I had - she had made her mind up that all my aches and pains, my memory and concentration problems, my weight gain, my extreme tiredness and stiffness in my legs - they were all depression! Unbelievable but true - and this was a GP that I had previously thought a good one! My TSH was 'normal' at 2.5 and therefore that wasnt the problem according to the GP. The rheumatologist diagnosed fibromyalgia - at last I had something to search on and I found TPA. I had my bloods done privately through NPtech and found the T4 and T3 were low, although still in range. I used these to insist on a referral to an endocrinologist that TPA told me would likely treat me - and he did, thank God (and I mean that Im not blaspheming). The memory and concentration problems started to resolve very quickly once I was on thyroxine. I felt that I would lose my job if it wasnt sorted out soon - I was off work for about 4 months! I am sure that your symptoms will resolve once you are on the right treatment - then you can get back to work and living a life! The change in me was astonishing - I felt as though I had got my brain back - very quickly it felt as though someone had moved a grey veil from my eyes, things seemed brighter, and all of a sudden I could understand what people were saying - I even thought i had a hearing problem - my hearing was tested and perfect! - because I couldnt understand why I couldnt follow conversations! Ive gone on a bit but I could weep when I think about how I felt and it was so easy to resolve - it was ruining my life and the GP was useless, very nice and friendly, but totally useless to help me!! When you get on the appropriate treatment for your thyroid illness I am sure that you will get your memory back - Id bet my shirt on it!! Guest guest
I think for most people suffering hypothyroidism the short term memory and 'brain fog' are caused through a lack of T4 converting to T3. Once T3 is started and given in the right proportion, the memory and brain comes back. T3 has to get through the brain barrier to make it work Are you sure that you are converting the T4 into T3 Ina. I see you are on a high dose of Thyroxine AND 2 grains of Armour. Why did you start Armour with such a high dose? Have you had a blood test to wee what your Free T3 is. If your local laboratory won't do it, can you get this done through NPTech Services. I think most people feel better when they stop synthetic thyroxine completely and change over to natural thyroid extract. People seem to forget that it is the active hormones T3, T2 and probably T1 that the body needs. Why take an 'inactive' hormone - especially if you can't convert it. luv - Sheila Hi P I also thought I was getting senile dementia in my 50s as couldn't remember anything, had trouble getting my words out, I spoke a good gobblygook and also slurred, it was all very embarrassing as the family didn't understand and I defiantly didn't know what was coming out of my mouth next. Guest guest
Depends on cause. LDN has helped my fibrofog, and there are reports that it helps in some cases of dementia. I would strongly suggest you try Cognitol, the Ayurvedic herb, Celastrus paniculatus, from www.omchiherbs.com. It has done wonders for me, as an adjunct to LDN. Guest guest
I think it is related. Many of the disorders for which people take LDN have memory problems as one of their features. If those problems are not completely addressed by the use of LDN, it is important to know what might, or might not, be beneficial to use along with LDN. We all know that LDN is not a stand-alone drug, and that has been pointed out recently. So, why should we not discuss other things we can use with it to make our lives better? I, for one, enjoy a broader discussion here, and have learned a lot from off-topic discussions. But then, I never have been a stickler for rules. If a topic doesn't interest me, I just delete it.
