Guest guest
Hi Carol, I have some ideas for you. I was on atkins diet before I became a total vegan. And like you, I lost weight on Atkins. But, I gained a bunch back with constipation to boot! That diet will screw you up! But anyway, I found success in cleansing. www.ariseandshine.com and check out their 28 day cleanse. I would highly recommend you get his book...on website! THis changed my life forever! Blessings! Carol <cinders@...> wrote: Hello all. I joined this group cuz I have hypothyroidism. I take Synthroid or its equivalent, 75mg. When I started dieting two years ago, I started on South Beach. I lost 50 pounds pretty quick, and then it came to a standstill. I have been struggling to lose anything every since. I started at 305 and am now 240 but been at 240 for the last year or more. The only way I can seem to lose to stay below 1200 (better at about 1,000) calories (and ONLY healthy foods) and workout for 3 hours a day. Needless to say, I can't keep that up for ever and as soon as I don't do it, I gain REALLY fast. I'm talking up to 14 pounds in a week, 7 pounds in two days. As you can see, I still need to lose a lot of weight to be healthy. My doctor has no help for me. She tests my thyroid and says it's okay. I'm at a total loss at this point in what to do. I'd like to be thinner and healthier for my kids. I've tried real hard, but once I lose a few pounds, then I gain it back in a day (literally). I was hoping this group could help me, tell me what diet to follow, what to do. I just don't know anymore. I have a children's book that came out and I am doing lectures at schools, been in the newspaper, do booksignings. I already have social anxiety and I know that my weight makes me more self-concious. I don't want to be " the fat lady " when I talk to all the kids. IF anyone can help, I'd sure appreciate it, cuz no one else seems to be able to. Guest guest
Hi, When you say about you doc " She tests my thyroid and says it's okay " ,do you know the name of the tests she is doing? A lot of docs will test only the TSH levels and conlude on normal thyroid function. You need to be tested for Free T3 and Free T4 levels also to know the exact picture. The free T3 is very important for your metabolism.A lot of HypoT ppl who have weight issues are not able to convert T4 to T3 and hence need T3 supplemens (Cytomel etc) to keep a check on the weight. Try to keep a count the number of calories you are eating and the calories consumed in a day.If the latter is greater than the former and you still gain weight then the obesity is related to your medical condition. In such a scenario diets will not help but make things worse. Guest guest
Thank you. I went to the doctor and they don't see any reason to put me on any other thyroid meds. She said she would like me to see a endo but my insurance won't pay for it. Basically I am stuck. As for my weight, I just have to know that I can never cheat (cuz if I do I pay for it in a huge weight gain), and I have to stay busy and exercise most of the day. I know that I can't stop doing it either, cuz again, I pay for it in a huge gain. My doctor said to keep a journal for two weeks and bring it to her and see what to do next. Guest guest
Time to become proactive and get your health back! Why on earth would you be stuck? It's your body, not the doctor's! Why not ask the doc to keep a journal of how many patients actually get well under her care? Meanwhile YOU NEED ENOUGH OF A DIFFERENT MED. You are getting poor medical care--why is that OK? Guest guest
Yes, but it still has to do with your insurance. I am currently on Medicaid and go to the clinic they tell me too. Until I can get someone to say I can go somewhere else, or until I can pay for a visit myself, I have to see the doctor they provide me. But I am going to keep trying to get someone else. Guest guest
May I ask a question - is thyroid medication so expensive in the US that people need insurance to cover it? A bottle of 200 thyroxine tabs costs me about $30 AUD - approx $23 American dollars - one bottle lasts me nearly a month and I have a very high dose - Is it so expensive there that you can't afford to pay for it yourself? In other words is the cost to your health worth what the meds might cost you otherwise? If you found a good doc and get an rx for Armour for example you can also buy it online very cheaply - there are so many alternatives to bad medical care. Pardon me if I am talking through my hat I don't really understand the US health care system. But I too got lousy care and had to take my health into my own hands - I'm broke too but my health is more important to me than being in debt. Take care, Kerry Re: New And Questions Yes, but it still has to do with your insurance. I am currently on Medicaid and go to the clinic they tell me too. Guest guest
Kerry, You wrote: > May I ask a question - is thyroid medication so expensive in the US that > people need insurance to cover it? ... Retail prices are at least double here. One of the benefits, if you choose to look at it that way, of insurance companies, is that they negotiate reduced rates with hospitals and suppliers. Thus, the ones that pay the most for medical care, are the ones who can't afford insurance. Chuck
Guest guest
Kerry, what is the strength of Armour that you're taking? If I buy it at the pharmacy with a doctor's prescription, it costs me about $11 US dollars for a month's supply. I have insurance, so this is my co-pay. (90 mg tablets). Buying it online without a prescription is not any cheaper, maybe even more, with shipping and all. I agree with you that your health is more important than anything else, I'd pay anything if I knew it would really work. But there is so much " snake oil " out there, if you know what I mean. Guest guest
Sorry - just me being vague..... I don't take Armour anymore because strangely the synthetics work better for me - I take 200 mcg of Thyroxine and 60 mcg of time release t3. In addition I take progesterone and testosterone in a cream, Cortef occasionally and melatonin for sleep. I made great leaps in my health when I first got hold of thyroid hormone nearly four years ago, and in my excitement I tried high doses without telling my doc - to my surprise these high doses actually fixed things - then I had a year or two with big setbacks and relapses (but I never relapsed on the depression - thanks to T3 that is gone for good) until recently with a new hormone doc I have been taking progesterone and testosterone together now for two months - I am feeling a steady improvement. My thinking is that we just need a certain amount of time to heal and that can be shortened with all the right diet etc and lifestyle changes - but it is still going to take time. I think I've bought my fair share of Snake oil too LOL Where do you think you are in the process? Guest guest
I recently found this group after beginning the research of PA. I am 37 years old, diagnosed with psoriasis when I was 10. About 5 years ago, I had a week when every joint (it seems) in my body swelled and was extremely painful, I couldn't even twist my wrist enough to start my car! Drs. then did testing for RA and Lupus and according to them, the #'S didn't come back either negative or positive. Since that time, I have had intermittant joint pain, but tolerable. This summer, my left knee started really bothering me with swelling and great pain. I put off seeing my PCP about it until recently, thinking it would go away when I tapered off working in the yard, etc. Tests for RA and lupus have come back negative. X-Rays aren't showing osteo- arthritis. My PCP has only seen one case of PA and he described the pain as " intolerable " constantly. Daypro and/or Feldene are making pain tolerable, most days I can do what I need to do if I don't have to get up and down too much, or sit still too long. Nights I use heat/ice for relief. PCP is referring me to a Rheumy, but there are only 2 within a 2 hour drive in the area and the wait is 6 mos. +. I guess my questions are could this be PA? Symptoms that are common with PA are: neck stiffness/pain for 1 + years, eyes are extremely sensitive to light, knee pain/swelling, but mostly in left knee (not the same on both sides), ankle, foot, and finger pain/swelling, and of course psoriasis. Sorry for the lengthy description, I am just hoping for some info to share with my PCP to help while we wait the 6 months for the rheumatologist appt. Thanks very much! The info so far has been very helpful and hopeful. Michele
Guest guest
Hi , I just tried the raw egg drink today and it was totally yum. I was putting it off, quite revolted by the idea of raw egg, but it was delicious. And what a super easy breakfast! I have to agree I am struggling to change my thinking after years of being told salt, fat etc are all bad. And I am still suffering what I hope is die off, so it's hard not to associate new diet with feeling sick and remain faithful to all the information presented here. Will keep on though. Try the drink, a pleasant surprise. C.
Guest guest
> > Hello, I've been reading for a couple of weeks. Wrapping my brain > around all of this - wow, it is really complicated to just totally > switch your diet around. (thank goodness, I was already pretty much on a NT diet anyway!) I was at an event last night where everyone was > eating chocolate cake - and I wanted to eat it about as much as I > would a hunk of plastic. Its the nuts, seeds, corn chips snacks > around the house that are harder for me to give up. ==>Hi . Welcome to our group. (For members that might not know, NT stands for Nourishing Traditions which is the title of Sally Fallon's cookbook, and se is the founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation at www.westonaprice.org) > > So I was really looking at the protein/fat ratios today and, wow, I am supposed to eat somewhere around 200gr of fat? (I'm 5'4 " so my amounts are pretty close to the 5'6 " example) jeeze. Does this actually mean that if I look at my bowl, it should have twice the amount of fat than protein? I really need to make my own food pyramid to " get " this. I need to visually see about how many tablespoons of butter/coconut oil/lard I should be eating. And what does 63 grams of protein look like? Are we eating tons of vegetables... or maybe not so much fiber? ==>It can be difficult to visualize the " amounts " required. Many members report that it becomes more " second nature " once they have calculated the amount of foods they need to eat that the grams represent by using a nutritional calculation like www.fitday.com. Grams are not translated directly to any kind of quantity of food; you go backwards by entering foods into fitday and seeing how much different amounts translate into grams. See this article on How to Use Fitday.com: http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/foods9.php > > So, I have pretty mild symptoms. I tend to be a little bit stuffy in the nose most of the time, I usually get somewhat bloated when I eat, I have a hard time sleeping through the night without a snack and I have a very slight vaginal itch that is completely ignorable. When I was pregnant (I have two young kids), my digestion very nearly shut down and I would get bloated to the point of nausea everytime I ate anything. I think that is really the yeast shining through. I had a test done by my ND and it reported that I had a slight candida > overgrowth and some other bad bacteria in potentially pathogenic > numbers. But also the high number of good bacteria too. ==>Most tests for candida are inaccurate, and candida goes hand in hand with other bad bacteria. The best test is Dr. Crook's Questionnaire - found in my main candida article:http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/intro2.php > > So, what is my question with this report? Well, I'm really on the > right track right? (of course you will support this) I've been > pretty good with the diet except I am still figuring it out. Do I > really have to do this? (Ok, I wouldn't have come this far if I didn't believe that I needed to) Do I really have to give up my raw milk kefir??? I don't want to! It is healthy for me. the farmer depends on my part of the farmshare. (we get 6 gallons a week and i'd have to cut that considerably without my kefir habit) Maybe bone broths can take the place of the nourishment? and the cabbage juice could replace the probiotics. But I have to make that every day?? ugh. ==>Yes you are getting off to a good start . Unfortunately kefir also contains alcohol, along with sugar called galactose (lactose lowers but it changes into galactose during fermentation). Because candida sufferers cannot have dairy, other than butter, it usually lowers their calcium and magnesium intake. Bone broths replace some nutrients in dairy, but you may also need calcium and magnesium citrate supplements too. Most candida sufferers would do okay having 1 cup of bone broth with every meal without having to take cal/mag supplements. Probiotics are the last step of the program as noted in my main candida article (above). If you want the best natural source of probiotics it would mean making it every day. After a few days it also becomes " second nature. " Also see " Curing Candida, How to Get Started " ; http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/intro1.php > > and non-organic lard (from pigs raised outdoors on a local farm fed > milk and food scraps and regular old pig-feed) isn't going to hurt me much, is it? ==>No, it won't. > What do you eat for snacks? (ok, I admit, havne't tried the egg drink - I am a little nervous around all those raw eggs. ==>Snacking is discouraged since it is better for digestion to not eat between meals, which is a type of fasting. However, if you feel you have to snack, eggs are the best option. Some people keep boiled eggs in their fridge for snacking on. About " raw eggs " see this article: http://www.mercola.com/2003/feb/5/eggs_salmonella.htm ==>If you want to get well this program will do it! It does take time, patience, and persistence on the program, but it gets amazing results! Even more than I realized when I started this Group almost 4 years ago. There is no better way to get healthy than to build up your immune system. In fact, Dr. Herbert Nehrlich, a WAPF chapter leader and Orthomolecular Physician in Australia wrote that Bee's program would make anyone healthy! The best in health, Bee
