Guest guest
My last EMG/NCV in June of 99 showed that I have re-innervation going on. For how long who knows? Or where, who knows? The only time I had a nerve biopsy was at age 14 and I have no idea what that showed, except I remembered the word 'negative'.
Guest guest
I have CMT 1 and from what the nurologists have told me that in CMT 1 it is not unusual to have re-inervation. I have had a sural nerve biopsy. The following I have copied from the SURGICAL PATHOLOGY REPORT dated 7/12/83 it is as follows: " RIGHT SURAL NERVE BIOPSY Fresh frozen cryostat sections of the right sural nerve cross-section showed few myelanated nerve fibers in very large bundles of connective tissue. There were quite clear onion bulbs also seen. there was no clear cut inflammation observed in longitudinal section. again, the diminution of myelinated nerve fibers was very severe. " No I dont have a garden in my nervous system. Ha Ha! Doctors have explained to me that the onion bulbs are a sign of demyelanation and remyelanation. My most recient EMG/NVC was in December of 2000. This time it was performed on my rigrt hand and forearm. (I'll be going next Monday to a occupational theripest tobe evaluated and fitted with hand splints. Thease are to see if they help the clawing of my fingers.) The results of the NVC over the tested length of nerve was values of 11 and 13. The nurologest said if I did not have CMT1 the values should have been well over 30 for the same nerve tested. Onward and UPWARD! Owen Gretchen Glick wrote: > My last EMG/NCV in June of 99 showed that I have re-innervation going > on. For how long who knows? Or where, who knows? Guest guest
So reinnervation means the nerves restored their selves right? How does that happen? Is that normal in CMT or a miracle or something? Good News though! So did the EMG show the problems in axon or Mylen sheath? My daughter is thought to have 2 or 4 but it was axonal degeration. That is good news.
Guest guest
My doc said this is spontaneous - from what or why I don't know. Dr. Paolo Vinci's book explained this best, nerves rewire themselves, but if I remember correctly this is for a limited time. My CMT is axonal, meaning within the nerve itself. ~ Gretchen This definition is from Wikipedia: When a motor nerve dies, a nearby nerve can grow a new axon to the affected muscle in order to take over the functionality of the dead nerve. This definition is from medicinenet.com Reinnervation: Restoration of nerve function after it has been lost. Reinnervation may occur spontaneously or be achieved by nerve grafting. The EMG (electromyogram) may show evidence of denervation with subsequent reinnervation in motor neuron diseases such as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) because the remaining healthy motor neurons can reinnervate the denervated muscles.
