Dear ,

I sincerely hope you feel better and stronger today!

I looked up on your message because it sounded so familiar...

For the last two to three weeks I've felt like you mentioned. Day

after day being extremely tired. Normally I am a very positive

person that tries to see the bright side, but I could not manage to

do that as the days went on and EVERY LITTLE THING was a BIG effort.

Then, I woke up this morning and something had changed over night.

I feel all right!

I have found that the only thing I can do feeling so bad is stay in

bed no matter what. I guess I am lucky in that way that I can

actually do that, since I don't have any children and my kind,

patient husband seems to survive very well without a home made dinner

on days like that.

I believe the only thing we should do on these bad days is rest, rest

and more rest. Any pushing ourselves will just make the time

to " recover " longer and even progress the CMT.

You have my empathy, it is hard to keep any possitive thoughts while

feeling totally exhausted.

Be kind to yourself - the world can go on a couple of days without

us....

Best wishes from Nina Cat.

Remember when having a " Bad Day " to " make it " turn out

for the good! Life may give you lemons, but add a

little sweet to the sour and it can be lemonade!

I have found this to be so true in the last three

Hi Libby,

Here's a bit of philosophy about pain that I have used for decades.

Pain is my friend;

It warns me when I am doing too much,

It makes me stop when I am hurting myself,

It warns me when I am using a part of my body unaccustomed to the work,

It makes me to lie down and spare myself from further injury,

It lets me know that some parts of my body are still there,

It causes me to check it out with a doctor when it gets worse or diappears,

It allows me to keep track of many problems small and large,

It creates in me some tolerance in life for things which could be worse,

It often goads me into action to get help,

It can be a very faithful companion and sentinel of my body's condition,

It can be taken down a peg if it gets to big for its breeches, otherwise it

seems to be proportional to the problem,

and finally, I wouldn't want to lose my " friend " as that could be dangerous.

Don't bother to look this up, it's my own personal feelings after 61 years

of being associated with " My Friend " . EdM

Hi ,

Thanks a lot for the complement, but it is undeserved. There has been so

much comment of late on pain and drug pain management that I kind of

summarized the thoughts that have kicked around in my mind for years then

and there. As for poetry in my soul, I can maybe get to " Roses are red and

violets are blue --- " but then maybe it's a hidden talent subverted by too

many years the engineer. lol

Nobody ever views pain as a natural resource. I can see that extreme pain

needs to be treated as it can be destructive. But, to view it as a resource

helps to accomodate it. It's kind of like having a porcupine as a pet ---.

Just think if the doc never got an answer to the question, " Now tell me

where it hurts? " we would get very few good diagnosis. lol - EdM

Hi Becky and the group,

Well, being able to laugh about it is halfway there!

Seriously, pain is a measure for me in relation to the various symptoms that

accrue to my personal phenotype. Being an engineer by training, trade, and

inclination, it is helpful to be able to measure status accurately enough to

know when to seek help. Some docs wear out fast when you come in repeatedly

with complaints. It helps to gauge what's going on by changes in pain

frequency, location, and level. If I could find a " magic bullet " that would

eliminate all pain, I think that would be scary since I would never know how

serious an illness might be until it would be too late to help the problem.

There are other ways to manage pain besides extreme use of drugs. The

comments on potential organ damage are valid. Probably the most widely used

" pain " management drugs are alcohol and nicotine but pain is both objective

and subjective and standards are hard to come by between patients and docs.

I at least prefer to try to standardize within my own sphere to maintain an

accomodation to it. The big rub is communicating to nurses, docs, and

wives - - - " Now on a scale of 1 to 10 - - - " WHOSE SCALE ? - EdM

Ed----You're being modest, but that's ok we're all obligated to be

sometimes :o) . I like the philosophy you displayed in your poem. It

made me think, and gave me something to relate to. It was very true

and honest, and seemed as if it had been thought through thoroughly

for some time. That makes me scratch my head and think. I'm trying to

write a story that I can be proud of, I enjoy trying to astound

myself. I'm working really hard on it, and I hope I can look upon it

and be please with my work. Your poem makes me think, and Kat has

told me a few things that have tapped into this thought as well. How

can I write something worthwhile without tugging, pondering, and

working with the idea for a long time? Perhaps I can't. I'm trying,

but maybe I'm just not there enough to create something to that

magnitude. I want to write something that hits people on several

different levels. I just thought I would tell you guys you definitely

made me think about what I'm trying to accomplish. Thanks

Marta,

You are there! Every post you have written hits us all on many

different levels. The term " wise beyond her years " comes to mind.

Hi Marta,

At the very great risk of being trite - " I feel your need and ambition. "

But, truly I do and although I've always had a decent " gift " for writing,

mine is to make some advances in the art of applying advanced composite

materials to small light aircraft in a low cost, low labor, and low weight

way before I pass on. My early retirement in '93 was to this end. The

ambition was simple. Build a suitable retirement home for the task, get to

work, and use my experience to get it done. That project was started in '89

and a few things got in the way - angioplasty, three open heart surgeries,

and CMT/HNPP. I'm still plugging away at it and not getting bonkers for now.

Back to your letter. Look into a mid century author by the name of Nevil

Shute (Norway). His prose is pure, his storylines are spellbinding, his

subject matter is as human as it gets, and his craftsmenship is impeccable.

In all of this, his writing was a hobby! Professionally, he was an engineer

and aviation executive. His books go directly into movie scripts with very

little modification because of the efficiency in his writing. " On The

Beach " , " Pied Piper, and " A Town Like Alice " are ones you might have heard

of on the screen. Aside from enjoying his stories, there is much to be

learned about writing from his stories. Awesome good luck in your

endeavors - EdM

P.S. His daughters have an Association to his memory - try shutesinoz.org

for reviews and other data on his career. One review there by Orwell

sums Shute up in my book. GO was another writer of similar " ilk " as you

probably have studied him in school.

Ruth-

Now it's my turn to be modest, lol. I never know what to say when

people respond like that, although I am appreciative. I'm getting

better at writing all the time, but I'm facing that problem. Of tying

together the whole story so it hits people and makes them think about

the events. I'm getting there, but it's slow work. Thanks for the

support Ruth :o)

EdM;

I agree with your take on PAIN BEING A FRIEND!

Thanks so much for taking the time to share with me; I

do relate your feelings about pain being a friend;

many do not share this view as they don't like having

to deal with " pain " , but I do see it as a natural

protection and defense from further harm or damage!

This is one reason I won't take headache meds or cold

meds ( they only mask symptoms and make you think you

are well so you get up and go on and may cause more

harm; not letting the body heal or recuperate the way

it should) most times to get rid of the symptoms but

don't fix the problem; you don't feel it but you still

have the headache; the headache is a signal something

else is wrong in the body! Maybe toxins, or sinus

infection or even neck or back our of alignment;

I find usually it means there are poisons or toxins (

shallow breathing causes toic headache form lack of

good exchange of oxygen and carbon monoxide in my

system; I suck on vitimin C which helps me get rid of

headache (not just symptom) Headache goes for vitimin

C will surround the toxins and cleanse it from the

system. . I learned this trick from an old male army

nurse. Other things to do is to lay in a dark room and

calm the enrves by resting . . . putting pressure on

certain nerve points that release the body's own

natural morphine or endorphines which relieve pain.

So far, I've been very fortunate in learning ways to

manage my pain; and sometimes it is very severe but I

have been able to do it without drugs ( my body don't

process drugs normally and dont' work well usually;

get worse side affects ). . . I do understand those

who need toand do use meds though. . you cope how you

can and do the best you can with what you've been

given.

Thanks for your supporting message and for your kind

friendship and willingness to reach out to me! I have

been down and frustrated at the fact I do have to slow

down more all the time but I also feel I'm coping

pretty well under the circumstances. Being able to

" whine " here helps vent my frustration to those who I

know can truly empathize !

it was a 6 for about 3 nites in a row, or its a 3 today, etc. This helps

them get an idea of what I was/am feeling. Yes pain is used to identify the

Bill-

haha, what you said brought me much amusement. I must have laughed

and giggled for nearly an hour, if you doubt this contact my mom.

While writing, I may seem sophisticated/mature enough. I promise you

all though, if you ever actually hear me speak as soon as I utter a

word you will all realize what a teenager I am. I like to say

intelligent things if I can manage them, it seems so much more

worthwhile then cluttering my speech with " uh " , " ahs " and " likes " .

But I do, I end up saying all those pharses that I hate hearing

myself say. My verbal communatcation has very little confidence,

another teenage quality I'm sure. Like my writing, it's improving by

leaps and bounds but is definitely not there yet. If I ever become to

adult for any of you to comprehend, just imagine a greesy teenage

girl before you looking anxious and stuttering as she tries to

remember what she was going to say. :o)

Greg,

If I remember, you also have an audit this week at work. Oh, well,

things have got to get better. At least you're not having to take a

lot of pred and in the middle of an asthma flare! Still, it'll be

harder to help out with the baby with a broken arm. Hang in there!

Take care,

online and I have an account already. You could check to see if your

States have a Walk-a-thon for Asthma. It is a lot of fun and very

much info is given out.

Greg,

I'm sorry that a lot of things are hitting you all at once.I tell my

church folks that when they are on the bottome there is only one

place to look and that is " UP " :)

This 20mg of pred a day is only TEMPORARY for me :)I know that once

the mold goes away, I will be off of it once again.

My pastor is on vacation next week and I will be in charge of all the

hospital visitation and emergencies that arise within the flock. I'm

glad to know that I am breathing and ready to take on any challenge :)

God Bless my friend and happy breathing.

Doug
