Hi erbr

The first thing I would recommend is to not panic. The second is to find a good

Dr with experience with Lyme Disease. Phone your local Lyme support group and

they can point the way to better docs and away from those with less experience

and/or a less than open attitude.

There are so many variables and guesses as to the kids' exposure and whether

they may or may not be affected...or even if you are too. Pregnancy is a time of

body/physiological upheaval and symptoms that come up may be related to the

pregancy, and/or may be making existing conditions worse, or masking a new

condition. All good reasons why a Dr will be needed for your questions.

Dont rely too heavily upon tests, and dont try to order them yourself. A good

Lyme Dr will know which ones to order, and where to trust to send it...as well

as be able to evaluate your symptoms apart from any results.

During pregnancy the immune system isnt working as usual ( partly so as to not

reject the baby), and it can take months for it to normalize...especially if

nursing...making testing an even more chancy thing. For those not pregnant,

testing isnt perfect so you can imagine what adding a recent immune system

change can do!!

For ME, I was infected around the end of my last pregnancy and the symptoms were

first misdiagnosed as pregnancy related, then as anxiety then finally as post

partum depression. Like you, back then I was fairly young with 3 kids, (

newborn, 6,4 ) having just taken a leave from my doctoral classes and teaching

assignments, so therefore I must have been depressed!!! about 5-6 months later

when every psych drug failed and I was much worse I finally demanded to see my

psychiatrist's own Dr who then ultimately diagnosed my Lyme. It was years later

after 2 relapses that we found Bartonella as well. ( I was infected 17 yrs ago

when not much was known about co-infections or even Lyme Disease complications).

It wasnt obvious then, but after reviewing my third child's medical history and

his current battles with multiple tick illnesses, I must have infected him while

pregnant!!

The only advice I think is important is to be careful about taking anything

while nursing...there is no way to tell how much is passing into the milk and if

the substance is changed first by your body, and even how the baby may react to

it. It isnt ever a good idea (in my opinion) to try to medicate an infant by the

nursing Mom taking something.

If you need help locating a Dr, reply here with the State/city you live in or

near and we can link you to websites that may be of help.

A good place to start to learn more about tick illnesses are these 2 sites:

www.lda.org and www.ilads.org

good luck

[ ] New - Have many questions

Hi, I am 29 yrs old & have a 6 yr old, 3 yr old & 12 week old. For

about a month now I have had achey knees, slight dizziness & something

funny going on in my left eye (the vision is fine.) A few days ago I

developed an all over " sunburned " type feeling.

I had a western blot through Quest which came back negative. I ordered

a test through IGENEX that I will take Monday for western blot & all 3

co-infections.

I am posting here because I am nursing my 12 week old & 3 year old. I

have no recollection of a tick bite or rash, but I understand that it

isn't always present.

If I start taking antibiotics, will they go through my milk & help

prevent Lyme in my babies (if I indeed have it?)

If I stop nursing, take my antibiotics, should I put my children on

antibiotics even if they are not showing symptoms? Would that prevent

chronic Lyme?

OR, if I don't treat them now, and they start showing symptoms later,

will it automatically be chronic Lyme?

Thank you Finette, how could you tell I was panicking??!! I just want

to save my kids from possibly getting LD from me....if I have it. Such

a tough decision when it comes to nursing, as you can probably tell by

the fact that I'm still nursing my soon-to-be 3.5 year old, I'm a big

breastfeeding advocate!

We live in Collegeville, PA (SE PA)suburb of Philly. Many of these

LLMD's have huge waiting lists! If I'm going to have to rack up my

credit cards, I hope it's a good Dr. Wish I could go see Dr. B.

I was just watching a conference from last May that someone mailed me

& Dr. J answered a woman's question about her having had LD for 10 or

15 yrs & not knowing it & her concern for her 2.5 yr old son who

nursed for his whole life (2.5 yrs.) Dr. J asked if the child was

showing symptoms. What a hard question - how do you tell if a toddler

is showing symptoms?? They have so many quirks & go through so many

" phases " constantly. He advised frequent PCR's through Igenex of the

child's urine.

That's what I don't understand though, if the child *is* symptom free

& when he is say, 5 yrs old & develops symptoms, is he automatically

considered " late stage? "

Thank you Finette.

I don't have any answers, but as a dried up La Leche League Leader who nursed my

kids for 2, 4 1/2 and 3 1/2 years respectively, I totally understand your desire

to not stop nursing if you don't have to. There are so many benefits to

Breastfeeding, as well as passing on so many immunities. Yet I am learning so

many conflicting things from the LLMDs on this front as to Lyme being passed in

utero and through the milk. If my kids were little, I too would be panicking,

wanting to do what is best, but not sure who really knows.

I know Dr. has experience with Lyme that was contracted through pregnancy

and/or nursing, so may be a good resource for you, if you can get to him. I am

not sure how far from him you are.

I just wanted to say, I understand the difficulty of your decision, and wish

there were more answers I could give to you. You are obviously a loving and

caring mom and whatever you decide to do re:breastfeeding, your children have

reaped many benifits and will continue to build a strong bond with you.

Hugs,

If Dr. J suggests PCR testing with Igenex then I would

definitely do it if your concerned. My girls who I

believe were both infected from me in utero or

breastfeeding never had huge health issues as babies.

I too was misdiagnosed for 15 years. When we saw Dr.

J (we travel from Oregon to see him) he questioned

whether they got it from me because he said most

babies who are born with Lyme are pretty sick from the

start. I can't remember if you said you have been

tested but that is maybe the best place to start. I

know its overwhelming, try to just take it one day at

a time.

Thanks Finette,

Did you treat your youngest? Sorry, I can't remember if we've had this

conversation! How did you test? Did it show up immediately in testing?

Finette, I think I was confused because Barbara posted in there, I was

referring to you post towards the bottom of the thread & the comment

above. Sorry for the confusion.

The politics surrounding this illness is a bit weird...many are very careful

about protecting our doctors and treatments...its a shame that we have to...plus

my son is a teen and I try to respect his privacy...most times :)...most of us

including me dont mind helping or answering, its just that some things are best

left for a more private email/phone conversation...like any other topic.

Re: [ ] New - Have many questions

Sorry, I guess I have to figure out what we do & don't talk about here.

no problem at all...I just wasnt sure who you needed an answer from...and yes

Evan is under treatment for the past 2 years. previous to this we treated

(undertreated actually) him at age 5 when his knees swelled and he had a

definite bullseye rash on abdomen ( funny thing is he was bitten about age 2 or

3 with no symptoms, and had some suspicious symptoms during infancy...never

suspected the connection) .Again happy to share details privately.

No need to apologize!

As with any group of people individuals act and react differently.

Sometimes it's best to discuss things off the list for personal reasons, to

exchange doctor information, or just because you know the conversation isn't

going to be placed in the archive forever. Some folks have even developed

relationships off list and they communicate using the old fashioned

telephone! =)

In time you'll get to know us and we'll get to know you and we'll learn

about each other.

Welcome!

=)
