MTX can cause mouth sores. Or, rather, MTX interferes with the

absorption of folic acid and the deficiency of folic acid causes the

oral ulcers. You should have been given a prescription for a very

large dose of folic acid to take along with the MTX. Most people take 1-5 mg

(milligrams) a day to control the oral ulcers. The usual dose of FA is measured

in micrograms; you will need a prescription-strength dose.

If you were prescribed FA, you can increase the dose safely up to

(usually) about 3 mg until the sores subside. Of course, you should

check with your Dr. before doing so. When you call, ask what the max dose you

should take is. My Dr. said up to 3 mg but other people here have taken up to

5. Best to ask up front how high you can go, so you don't have to keep calling.

If you were not prescribed FA, call the Dr. right away and tell them

you are having trouble with your mouth and that you understand you may need

prescription-strength folic acid.

Hi, Just a few questions to those of you who have had experience

with methotrexate. He's giving me 2.5 mg per week for three

weeks, then 5 mg per week for 2 weeks then 7.5 mg after that. I know 2.5 mg

isn't much but my mouth feels kinda weird after taking

it yesterday.

I haven't heard of anything about the mouth feeling weird. My son

hasn't ever mentioned that either. He just complained of a stomach

ache the day after he took it. We increased the amount of folic

acid he was taking and now he has no stomach pain.

If you are only feeling weird in your mouth, consider yourself lucky. I was

vomiting and had constant nausea and migraine headaches. I was taken off it

immediately. I am now on sulfasalasine with no problems. Isn't it so strange

when our bodies are all so different?

Sharon, see if your rheumy will write you a script for the 1 mg

prescription tabs. They are on the $4 list at Walmart and ended up

being cheaper for me than the OTC ones!
