Do you have any tips for minimizing this wonderful sensation. My husband is

afraid of me in the mornings because this pain is so horrible that I become a

monster.

I have foot pain too. A foot doctor told me the fascia (sp?) was

inflamed and that is very painful, I also get a lot of muscle spasms,

and knots I think is related to the inflamation. When I use shoe

inserts, I have some Dr. Scholls that support in key areas, it helps

a lot, but I haven't been using them lately, and I notice it when I

don't. Diabectics sometimes have foot problems. Since I have been

taking potassium, and magnesium and calcium, I have improved greatly

in muscle spasms. If you haven't already you may want to see a

podiatrist, they are the best in finding out about foot problems. I

feel for you, when your feet hurt, it's miserable!! I hope you write

back.

-Thank you Ruth for the information. Yes I have seen a podiatrist and

he sent me for a EMG to see if my nerves were working right and they

were. So that rules that out and I just suffer with it. The pain is

mostly in my toes and the bottom of my feet. I am wondering if it has

anything to do with my cirrhosis which they have not found a cause

for yet. Do you know how long you can live with cirrhosis? I am so

depressed since I was diagnosised and they are not telling me

anything. Thank you for your time. I really appreciate being able to

talk to someone.-- In @y..., " hrby97111 "

Dear jjrbw,

I am sorry I don't know your name. The unknowns are ALWAYS the

hardest. I would really push your doctors to tell you more,

sometimes you need to be a bit of a pest to get answers. You have a

right to know, it's your health you're dealing with. Have you any

reference books like Palmer's " Hepatitis, Liver Disease, What

You Need To Know. " I am doing tons of research online right now, in

fact you might call me obsessed. I am one of those people that do

much better when I know as much as I can about what I am facing.

It's like a battle plan, you can't fight an enemy you don't know.

Please keep posting, we want to listen and try and help. I am like

you very new to AIH and other liver diseases, but I'm learning, and I

intend to fight hard to be healthy. It is natural to feel depressed,

just try not to isolate yourself, keep seeking people, after people

close you become more aware of what you are going through they will

want to help. As to how long you can live with cirrhosis, I wasn't

diagnosed until recently, but the first scarring started about 15

years ago, everyone is different, but I think with proper treatment

we can stop the cirrhosis from getting worse. Take care.

Love & Hugs,

Ruth

YES the pain in my feet is often excruciating, there seems to be no pattern

to it in terms of what i've been doing, whether i've been very active or

resting, the soles of my feet,in particular the heel,my toes ,it's like hot

needles, burning stinging pain, not pins'n' needles this is oh so VERY

different,it's not uncomfotable but downright painful,i'd be interested in

any possibilities you come across for this.

Helen,

My Mom has that with the cold feet. She was diagnosed as having Reynauds disease. She has to be very careful especially in winter. She has to wear hats gloves extra warmth on her feet. She also has a pair of feet warmers that you put in the microwave to activate the heat. She says that works pretty well. I have the problem of at times my feet hurt so bad to walk that it feels like my skin is going to spilt open. Really hurts which slows down my walking routine I haven't told the doc but may bring it up in my next visit.

Hi from one mad english woman to another yes I get very cold feet every one laughs when I get out my old comfortable rug at this time of year. Jeanette UK

Had a great time, went to visit an old house and gardens with mum, dad, 2 brothers and their families (4 children in total). Sat on a hill having a picnic, cold wind blowing and April showers falling, some heavy. Still, it was good fun. Yes, we are English!! We reckon that only the English would be this mad.Anyway, back on topic - feet (horrible things, I hate them).I don't get really painful feet, but I do get cold feet. And when I say cold I mean freezing cold. The only time of day they are warm is when I wake up in the morning. Even putting them on a heat pack or hot water bottle doesn't help. First my feet get cold, then my ankles. They begin to hurt as well. Sometimes the coldness gets up as far as my hips. I nearly always wear trousers, and usually socks, so it isn't just the cold wind blowing around causing it. Even if I stay in all day with the heat on I get cold feet.I would be very interested to hear if anyone else gets this, although I do feel a bit stupid asking. I mean, cold feet. Whatever next???Thanks a lotHelen (that mad Englishwoman)> Hi, I am new at this so I am not sure how to go about things. I was > just wondering if anyone has painful feet. Dear Jeanette,

I got a good laugh from your post ie: mad english woman , but to tell you, I also use a blanket and wear socks this time of the year and I do not have liver disease. I have always had cold hands and feet....

Thanks for the chuckle...

Donna,

Does he wear orthotics on his feet? Brook has been wearing orthotics

since he was 4 years old, a little after he learned how to walk. HIs

physical therapist says that it helps prevent future problems with his legs,

knees, joints, hip and feet by keeping them in the proper alignment.

Otherwise she says when they get older they can have all kinds of problems

that could have been prevented.

hey morisa...MM does not wear orthotics on his feet anymore. he did when he

was developing, but it did not do any good once he got heavier, around the

age of fourteen our feet 'set' and as predicted, his either had to have a rod

placed in the arch bones to keep them set in place, or his arch would set 'on

the ground'....we opted for no surgery, as we knew MM wouldnt handle it. he

has had a few surgeries, and each one was full of scarey stuff for all of us.

they cant keep him asleep under drugs, either! lol,..not funny, but i keep

telling everyone he sleeps when HE wants....and no one can make him! plus we

knew if they 'broke' his feet, he would NOT walk again. he is still walking,

but just cant go a long way at a time. only two years after nixing his

surgery, dr.bennett reported that had we done the surgery on his feet, we

would have already needed the ankle surgery done. he said it would take

about six surgeries. at the time, they were also telling me he needed open

heart, plus his x-rays for AAI came back that year showing he had severe

changes in his neck. needless to say, we all went nuts that year. that was

the year i pulled MM from all medical! threw away all his meds. took him to

disney world every six months....and we all just lived in LaaLaaLand.

Well,.....he is doing sooooo much better! there are some things dr.s can

fix. others are ok to leave alone. in mm's case, i think we made the right

decision. besides, disney world is so much more fun than children's

hospital!

mm didnt learn to walk until he was seven! no one could figure out why!

it didnt have anything to do with his feet. he has never spoken. but he

does yell at me if i dont do everything 'right'. LOL

your physical therapist is right about the alignments....we knew all of

that. but there are some things you cant fix. i couldnt see putting rods in

his feet, then ankles, then knees, then...well, you get the picture!

Donna,

Wow what a medical nightmare. That must have been a very rough year!! So

he didn't need the open heart surrey afterall and he did OK without meds?

I've heard that children with Ds don't do very well with orthopedic

surgeries, so I bet the foot and ankle, etc surgeries would have been pretty

bad for him.

I'm pretty sure Brook would hate Disneyland, but maybe someday. He doesn't do

well with crowds and people everywhere and I don't think he would like the

rides, last summer when we went without him, I tried at every ride to think

if Brook would enjoy it and there were very few at the time that I thought he

would like. But I do intend to take him someday. It's great that Monty

enjoyed the experience and I'm sorry his feet aren't holding up so well. But

I'm glad he is doing so much better.

Pris~

My husband had good feet all of his life until about a year ago. We

were away for the weekend walking around San Diego when suddenly one foot

began to hurt. He said he felt as though he was walking on marbles. We tried

to treat it by soaking the foot in Epsom salts, but it didn't help. Over a

period of weeks, his other foot began to give him problems as well. Since

then, both feet continue to give him problems. Generally, that feeling of

walking on marbles or pebbles. Also, some burning. Hot and cold water cause

him great distress.

He has been to neurologists, podiatrists, rheumatologists and no one

has been able to put an exact name to the problem. We suspect that it is

associated with Reiters, but no one has confirmed our suspicions. At this

time he is taking Neurontin, 12 tablets a day. If there has been any

improvement it has been very little. The general consensus is that his

nerves are breaking down and the feeling come from that process.

I don't know if this has been your experience, but I hope the

information helps.

Pris, I wonder if your arches could have fallen? Would it be possible for

you to get custom-made orthotics? My doctor referred me to a guy who made

them for just $100, but I understand most places charge a lot more. Maybe

you could try Dr. Scholl's insoles? Good luck.

Pris,

That's kind of a hard question to answer. For me, the arthritis *is*

a factor in my feet hurting -- plantar's fascitis -- plus, despite

being a large lady, I have very high insteps.

If you can't get an answer from your rheumatologist -- and I'm

assuming you have one -- then I'd suggest you see a podiatrist.

I *do* know that the higher heeled shoes you wear, the worse your

feet will be later in life -- my mother's (and my aunts') feet

are " walking " testaments to that. I'm WELL past the desire for shoes

to look good. I don't care WHAT they look like ... just so they

don't hurt!

I can recommend a specific shoe for you -- it's made by and sold at

SAS Shoe Stores. I don't know if SAS is a national chain -- it was

started in San , ergo, San Shoes (SAS).

Unfortunately, I can't tell you the style, but I *can* tell you they

kind of look like bowling shoes (yes, I know -- how stylish), but

they have a good arch support and they DO come in a WW (extra-wide)

if you need it. They're around $80, but they last FOREVER. (They are

NOT the mall-walking shoes -- the ones I'm referring to have a larger

toe box).

The next closest I can recommend are made by Naturalizer, though

they're more expensive and not as comfortable.

I hope this helps you in some way.

I was really intrigued by your question... have you changed meds

lately? Maybe your body is dealing with them differently? Stress in

general of course can make your feet sweat and then whatever's going

on in or on your body makes the smell. Mmmmmm!

The only thing I could find associated with a vinegar smell is a

zinc deficiency, which is often associated with connective tissue

disorders... hmmmmm...

Anyhoo, the very best thing I can think of is foot soaks (an excuse

to relax!) with epsom salts and tea tree oil. The t.t.o. should

attack any fungal colonization...

Can't wait to see what other peeps think.

I will talk to my hep when I see him in Nov

and will mention Zinc. I just think that it is

very weird imagine vinegar but they are not

sweaty didn't change the meds except he

gave me an antidepressant to help me sleep

which it doesn't so maybe it is the culprit

too funny and antidepressant that makes

your feet smell now that is depressing (hee, hee)

I certainly have pain in my feet, particularly on the soles. Our

tarsals and metatarsals (ankle and foot bones) support our whole

bodies; and there is a tremendous amount of shock absorbing

articulation that occurs between the joints of these bones. If there

is swelling (or extra calcium) in these joints, then it is probable

that tendons and ligaments are stretched - possibly damaged, the nerve

endings are stimulated and pain is the result. There is also the

possibility of bone grinding on bone, another result of calcification

of a joint.

Sounds like it could be Plantar faciatis not sure if i'm spelling it

the right way. But I had it when I was a teenager before I had my PA

diagnosis. Do you notice it's when your first start to walk on your

feet? Especially when you first wake up? My ortho doctor diagnosed me

with it. Hope this helps.

Yes I had it in the soles of my feet for a few months

when the PA had first began. It was Tendinitis. I'm

sure it was related to Pa. Anyhow my Chiropractor

recommended s shoes and they have helped. I

haven't had pain in the soles of my feet for almost 5

years.

I AGREE COMPLETELY.

Psoriasis on feet or on the soles of your feet is probably more common

than reported. For years, I treated what the doctor diagnosed as

athlete's foot. It never fully went away, even when I religiously

followed recommendations. Now on MTX, it still crops up, but I know it

is psoriasis, not athletes foot!
