My 2 year old son, who was diagnosed with Lyme at 15 mos, had 2 ticks on his

neck this morning. Both were absolutely TINY. I did get one out intact but the

other one is barely even raised from his skin. If I try to use tweezers I will

just pinch the skin.

We are on vacation on Martha's Vineyard, leaving tomorrow. The only option

available to us is the ER. Tomorrow we travel to NY where we will have more

options as far as doctors, etc. but we will not be back in CA until Thursday.

How important is it that I get this tick out today? Very, right? Should I take

him to the ER? I think they will have to break the skin to get it out.

If anyone knows a trick please let me know. I am panicking.

I just had to do this this morning....but I had a pair of tweezers that the

tips look almost like needles. Maybe you could get a pair of those, and it

would work better....honestly....on one of them, I gave him a little scratch

from it...but a far less severe injury that having a tick!

If it was my child I'd take him to the ER without hesitation. Unfortunately

Martha's Vineyard has its share of ticks but hopefully this means they're

familiar with extractions. You may want to do a very thorough check for

additional ticks as well, particularly in folds of his skin and dark, moist

places. If he had two, he may have more. Lastly, ask about prophylactic abx. I

just heard Dr. Fallon report today that 70% of ticks in endemic areas

carry Lyme. Can never be too careful!

Good Luck.

I would also take him in. Otherwise it will feed on him for a couple

days and if it is infected it will transfer it to him during that

time. You need to save the ticks and have them tested for Lyme's and

coinfections since you have them. Also have the baby tested in a few

days and then again in a few weeks or month. Watch for symptoms to

surface. And remember less than half of Lyme ticks leave a bulls eye

rash. And don't let the ER make you think your over reacting.

Take care,

Suzanne
