I already knew what flatback was and heard him mention the abnormal straightness of my spine, but he also mentioned the offset at L5/S1 and possible pain from the 'horizontal' bar across my pelvis. he gave me steroid injections in the office the first one worked pretty well, but the second one did not work at all. He also sent me for physical therapy where I saw that my diagnosis was "surgically induced kyphosis" About a year later, I called for another appointment and he did not want to see me. The nurse called me back and said there was nothing he could do for me as he does not recommend surgery in cases like mine. I asked for a referral to a pain management doctor and that is how I met the doctor who has kept me functioning for the last year with epidural, facet block, and SI joint injections containing a combination of steroids, anesthetic, and vitamins. I had gone for an initial visit with Dr Sachs at Texas Back Institute in Plano Texas because he was recommended by a group member and was very impressed with his understanding and explanation of my condition. He wanted me to go for the SI joint injections as a means of determining where my biggest source of pain was. He also wanted me to have an MRI, bone density scan, and a bone scan, then report back to him Well, I asked my PCP for a pain management doctor, but that one was a disaster. He recommended the electrical implant for all his patients and then said he couldn't help me after he saw my MRI (because my spine was fused. DUH! I told him that at the first visit), After hearing of all the problems patients in his packed waiting room were having, I picked up my records and didn't wait to see him on my next visit. I got out of there and called the scoli doc for a referral When I went for the bone scan, I found out that the bone density test is done in the women's clinic and looks for signs of osteoporosis. The bone scan is a nuclear test and is usually done on cancer patients. They asked me which one I was there for, and I assumed bone density. After looking at my notes from Dr Sachs, I should have had both. I have not gone back to Dr Sachs because my insurance has changed and he is not on it. Plus, I haven't had the bone scan yet. It has been almost two years since i saw him and one year since the MRI. I know my local doc starts people over as new patients if it has been more than a year since he has seen them. One other comment about the local guy -- he has a reputation for being quick to suggest surgery. I found this out when I got injured at work and workman's comp didn't want to pay for me to visit him. One of his colleagues said that if he thought he was capable of operating, he would have rushed me to surgery. So, his conclusion was that revision surgery must be extremely risky for the amount of relief available. I think this is one reason that the idea of more surgery terrifies me. Strange to read this today, as I was just thinking yesterday about how much they help with headache, all over body ache, and with bad menstrual cramps. They are an old fashioned remedy that people don't often think to try. I'm so sorry, Dorothy. I know how heartbreaking it is to try see your child suffer like this. I would try the magnesium creams, too. Carla Mega-herx What about trying a footbath? Hot water with the epsom salts in it bigtime, and let her soak her feet.
