I don't have experience with injections but our LLMD, DR. H, is putting our

almost 12 year old daughter on IV this summer -- she'll have been on oral

antibiotics for almost a year at that point.  He has not suggested doing the

injections first.

Does anyone have an experience with Bicillan and/or Rocephin injections?

Most likely my son (12) will do IV this summer but an adult friend mentioned

that she did the injections before going to IV. It sounds somewhat painful so

I'm just wondering if they normally have kids do the injections.

thanks,

Elaine

I did 13 months of Rocephin injections. They are pretty big

injections that are IM (muscular) so they must go in the hip or the

upper thigh into a muscle. I did 2grams of Rocephin every other

night. They are mixed with 5ml's of lidocaine to help relieve some of

the pain. You can however, do half the size every night. I liked

having the break. They didn't bother me until I got pregnant so your

son won't have that to deal with. Both my parents also did the

shots. They worked like magic for me but caused my parents to herx

quit a bit with cold chills and feeling yucky. The only herx I had

were night sweats because my hormones were changing as I was being

treated but that is actually a very good sign that the treatment was

working. Every month I felt better and better. For me it was like a

miracle. I am very lucky and that is unfortunately unusual. Although

for me I didn't feel human until at least about 8 months of treatment

and after 10 months I felt cured! I had to continue until my baby was

born to keep my blood " clean " per Dr. . My baby's cord blood and

tissue was negative!

If it were me making that decision, I would do the injections first

over the IV since the treatment worked so well for me and my mom and

it will not restrict you like the IV does and the risks the IV's

convey. They may hurt a little but you get used to it and the IV is

not going to be comfortable either. It's not going to mess up your

treatment to try both and if you don't like the shots you can then do

the IV. It's funny because now getting a regular shot is like nothing.

Tip: Sit down to give yourself the injection. For some reason it

hurts less to have the muscle stretched. And you can see yourself in

the mirror if you need to if you sit on the bathroom counter.

Alternate hips. Inject a little and wait several seconds to let the

lidocaine kick in before you finish it. Rub it good right after to

spread the medicine around in the muscle and that made it feel better.

Good luck,

Suzanne

Thank you, Suzanne, for your reply and tips. I'm glad you are well and that

your baby appears to be fine also!

My daughter, then 13, and I both had Bilcillin injections. Neither one of us

wanted to have IV's. It took a bit getting used to, especially since we were

both terrified of needles, but we had it down to a science. One hour before the

injections we'd put a numbing creme on and take Ibuprofin. Then 15 Minutes

before we'd ice. For the benefit, it was well worth any discomfort. We both got

used to it relatively quickly. It did the trick for both of us. We've both been

off all antibiotics for over a year and are holding really well. As a brief

background I had Lyme undiagnosed for over 20 years and my daughter had it since

birth.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you.

I think I did for about a year and my daughter did them for 6-8 months, I

believe. they were the turning point for both of us.
