Guest guest
You learn something new every day and this is very valuable information for a support group like this. Thank you!! Ontario [ ] Benadryl & MTX THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hello everyone I don't know who's idea it was to take Benadryl with the MTX but I know I read it here I want to say thank you it made a very big difference with the nausea and I want to encourage anyone to try who is having a problem with this it really works I was ready to tell the DR what they could do with the MTX LOL I could not function the day after I took it now the side effects are tolerable thanks again for everyone on this board for all of the advice and support it is like a lifeline stay well everyone and have a great week LINDA\ [Editor's Note: Taking Benadryl to prevent nausea has been around as long as Benadryl has. It works with most medications - not just MTX - so be sure to keep it on hand for a variety of situations. About 25 years ago, Benadryl save my dog's life after she had been stung by a bee and the dog turned out to be deathly allergic to bee venom. I put some liquid Benadryl into a syringe and squirted it in her mouth while she was passed out and within minutes I had my dog back. It works the same with adults and children but be sure you are cognizant of the dosage. Kathy F.]
Guest guest
months ago when i mentioned the benadryl to the group i felt that it wasnt taken seriously. my pharmacist was the one who told me to do it. im glad everyone is happy with the results. its such a simple fix. who would have thought!!! casey [Editor's Note: Since many of us, including me, have been taking Benadryl for years and years I don't think your suggestion would have received the response you say it did. I have even used the topical version to get rid of the site reaction I used to get when I was on Humira and this was long before you were on the list. Guest guest
I have done some research, Casey. This site was founded in 1998. On Feb 19, 1999, the first post touting the benefits of taking Benadryl to ease nausea from MTX was posted. There have been 191 posts since then with " Benadryl " in the heading and while I have not re-read every one, I can never remember seeing a single post that did anything other than tout its benefits. Perhaps people didn't respond to your post because they were busy or we may have had a discussion on that very topic just before you joined. I can't recall seeing a single post that was against taking Benadryl to ease any adverse MTX symptoms. Given that we have a constant churn of new members, please continue to extol the benefits of Benadryl whenever you see a newbie struggling with nausea from MTX. I wonder why my Dr never suggested this there answer to my question about the nausea was to increase my folic acid while this did help a little it was the Benadryl that makes me think I might actually be able to stay on MTX and increase my dose like my Dr wants thanks again for all the wonder useful advice and support I don't know where I would be with out it have a great week LINDA
Guest guest
Wish me luck with MTX!!!! I start taking it tonight. Should I take the pills and then a Benadryl with it? Seriously, I am scared to even put the pills near my mouth But I do know that these may be what I need to hopefully help me lead a half decent life. Saw my Rheumy yesterday and she is still stumped as to what I have, but will start these meds to help out with the symptoms. She thinks I am Sero-negative. Ontario [Editor's Note: Good luck, ! MOST people on MTX experience no significant adverse symptoms so the odds are that you won't either. A lot of people reap MTX's benefits - I hope you're among them. I don't see any reason to take Benadryl UNLESS you experience nausea. It is probably better to see IF you have an adverse reaction rather than try to hide it first. That's just my opinion - but I also don't see any harm in taking Benadryl as a precaution. I know that the first time you take " real " medication for any disease can be scary, so please remember we're here if you need to talk. Also remember, that the dose you are taking (5, 10, 15, 25 mgs?) is minuscule compared to the 800-1000 mgs taken by cancer patients. Much of the scary stuff you've read about MTX is based on these very high chemo doses - not at the doses we take. Any adverse symptoms should be relatively mild. Did your rheumy also prescribe folic acid? Most of us who are on MTX also take folic acid daily. It helps to eliminate some of MTX's potential side effects such as mouth sores. You can buy folic acid inexpensively over the counter if your rheumy didn't put you on it. I forget what your precise symptoms are. Do you have psoriasis anywhere? Do you have nail involvement? If you do, on a clinical basis, the odds are probably pretty good that your arthritic like symptoms are probably PA. Did your rheumy say why she is still unsure of your diagnosis? In any case, good luck and let us know how you're doing. Kathy F.] [ ] Re: Benadryl & MTX THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >I have done some research, Casey. This site was founded in 1998. Guest guest
linda, when i have freaky symptoms or any questions i always ask my pharmacist. i work with them and i really feel comfortable. she even knows so much about natural supplements. she mentioned the benadryl and i think its because she is one of those rare ones that talks to her customers. so she gets all kinds of feedback that a doc would not get. my rheumy had no suggestions for my nausea. . i just use all my sources. hang in there! casey rahrahbrick <rahrahbrick@...> wrote: --- In , " pugnfriend " < > I have done some research, Casey. Guest guest
kathy wow thanks for doing the research for me. that must have taken alot of time. you are right. there are new people coming to this website everyday. and im sure that they may not have the time to go back that far with posts, if its even possible. and because of this we should never be afraid to post a thought, idea or information because it might have been mentioned 7 years ago. it is such a postive to see such good information out there even if it is old news to someone else. thanks casey [Editor's Note: Casey, actually, our site is pretty user-friendly when it comes to research. Basically, you just have to go the Messages section of our site on groups and in the Search box, put in a key word you want information on. All posts that contain the keyword in the Subject line will be listed and you have a choice of going back to the oldest posts, the most recent posts or reading all the posts. Unfortunately, there may be a lot of posts that talk about the keyword but if the keyword is not in the Subject, they will not pop up during a search. One of the things that occasionally disappoints me is that after some people get the information they are looking for from this site, the don't share it with people who are new to the disease down the road. I think that's selfish and if there is something we can do to help others after we've been helped, I think we have a moral obligation to do so. Thank goodness, we have some good people who hang in there and do all they can to pass on all they have learned to people who are new to the disease.
