Guest guest
Hi, I'm completely new here (first message). I have lyme and co's, and my son is newly diagnosed with congenital lyme and co's. The problem is that I just can't figure out how much to tell the school. I don't know what to share with them, or what to ask them to do for him during the day. We are already struggling with the administration regarding his frequent absences, but I've asked for a note from him dr excusing those. What else should we do? Btw, he's in second grade. Any advice would be very appreciated!
Guest guest
I had that problem. I think we all do. What helped us out the most was having him classified 504. That is what Texas calls it. Your state might call it something else. But what it did was allow him to take work home to finish that otherwise wouldn't be allowed. It also helps the school to recognize that your child has a medical issue if there are any problems. It should excuse his absences but you will need to call the district about that. I did have to have a doctors note and the principal had paper work to fill out. It also does not " label " them negatively in any way. I was worried about that but it is not a problem. If he needs to miss over what your school will allow, check on the charter schools in your area. They have some here that are fantastic. The state sends you all the materials " free " . You log on in the morning, do your work and log out everyday. The kids that I know that do that also score commended on the state TAKS testing. It's a great program for children that can't make it to school enough and need to be home schooled. Guest guest
Our daughter has lyme and best we can figure she has had it since she was 4. she was not Diagnoised until about 3 years ago. We live in Maine. Our school system has been working with us. The biggest thing in our favor Was that her doctor wrote up a medical plan for her . We sat down with the doctor and worked Out a plan that would be in our daughters best interest. The teachers, principal and staff have Been great. At the time she did not meet the criteria of our state for the 504. I believe it has since Changed but we have not done it as it has not been necessary. As soon as the H1N1 hit our school the doctor wrote a note stating that it was in our daughter Best interest to be out of school while there was H1N1 was in the school as she did not want Her to have the shot because of what she was dealing with(our doctor is advising all of her patients not to get the shot). The school has offered to provideTutors till she can come back to school if we want. You do not need to go into the details of what your son has to the school. . They only need to know that he Has been diagnoised with Lyme disease. Your doctor can be a really great asset in getting What your son needs from the school. If you would like to talk to me or my husband (he deals mostly with the school) We can tell You exactly what we have done and could share with your doctor the medical plan that has Worked for us.
