Good luck and believe me Sisha, the National Guard members are going to

be getting out in the thousands beginning in October 1999. So rest

assured, you are doing the right thing, you're just one of the first's.

Keep reading the Onelist for updates to this fight.....

Shelby,

That is great news. I know when my son was new, we got excited about

an ounce in the beginning. 4 lbs, that's great. Glad she is doing well.

Hi Debi, i just wanted to say it's good to here from the older bandsters( not in age just in band)sometimes the board is full of us newbies and not enough of you veterans. Glad to here your doing so well on you band journey. Sorry to hear your having the problems your having but one things for sure at least the weight problem is under control and that helps make everything else a little better. Keep posting because for me it helps me keep my focus on the future instead of the here and now and thats important. Take care and good luck BelindaDebi <debi1214@...> wrote:

daughters backs..I guess I am a bit obsessed..I actually did spot a

slight hump in my classroom aides daughter one day when she visited

my classroom, I mentioned it to my aide and she took her to her PCP

who agreed and sent her for xrays.....bingo, a slight curve and she

is being followed a Dupont Hospital for Children in Delaware, noone

had picked it up, not even in school....scoliosis police on patrol!!!

How old is your daughter? ,PA

Dear ,

Ceili is thirteen, I found her curve at age nine while giving her a back

rub. So we have been watching it for four years, while it went up and down

in degrees, but it took a sharp progression last year during a major growth

spurt, so thus the brace. I think we've rounded the corner, and thats a

relief!

Man, I bet that is a huge relief.....my Mom did not find my " hump "

until I was 11 and by the time I got to a doctor and was braced for a

year it was moving far too quickly, hence the first surgery when I

was 12. I don't remember alot about it other than cursing at my

sister when she bumped my stricker frame and my Mom telling her it

was ok for me to curse at her, I was in alot of pain..we still joke

about it today..the only time a parent gave a blessing to curse at a

sibling!!!,PA

, I'm so happy for you and your daughter! I hope she has a long,

pain-free life.

I can certainly relate to 5 years of procrastinating -- That's about how

long I've been at it, LOL. But I don't have a progressing curvature. I

hope she makes the right decision. That's really nice of you, to spend so

much time helping her.

Dear ,

The news about Ceili must have been the best Christmas present

ever...big sigh and round of applause here!

I hope you don't feel to let down that the woman you counciled

didn't hear you. Maybe it will not be for her....her job is to

decide what is best for her...and if she is not " there " then no

amount of talking is really going to help.

The woman who cofounded Matias school says " people do things when

they want to " . I don't mean to over-simplify....but it really seems

true in many cases...Noone should undergo this surgery if they don't

wholeheartedly feel it is what they want. I don't believe they would

be able to ride out the mental toughness required to recover well.

Don't feel bad that you were not able to persuade her...you told her

the facts and she has to take it from there.

I hope you are feeling better yourself! Cam

Dear Group,Many of you have been so nice with your kind wishes through the years( in this group and the last) about how my daughter Ceili's scoliosis was going that I thought I'd share my good news.Ceili has a "C" type curve, and is braced, at 30 degrees. On this visit the curve went down to 28 degrees, and her growth plate has closed, so it looks like we have made it through without surgery, a huge relief after all I have been through. She will wear the brace for another 4 months, but only twelve hours a day and then we will wean her off of it. This is such a relief, I can't tell you what a weight is off my shoulders.Spent today with one of Dr. Kumar's patients who has a 64 degree curve and is facing her first surgery at 54. Since she doesn't have a ton of pain she keeps putting the surgery off. It's hard to know what to say to her besides that her bone isn't going to get any better, and since she is progressing, she does need to have it done. I think the decision is easier if you are in awful pain, and she and her husband have been mulling it over for 5 years. It was almost like she was looking for me to tell her not to do it, or to affirm her concerns. Hard to know what to say besides what I did. I told her to talk with someone who wasn't driven by pain to fusion to the sacrum, hopefully Kumar can find someone like that for her to talk to. I talk to these people for Kumar so they can have an honest Knowledge of what it's like to be fused to the sacrum, but this lady was looking I think for someone to say it isn't worth the risk of coming out of it worse. Felt like I wasn't a help. Oh well, I tried! Thanks for listening!

Dear Cam,

Thanks for your kind words! I like the line about mental toughness to

recover, so true, I couldn't have put it better. I have to walk the line

with these patients of giving the facts, and being a Dr. Kumar cheerleader,

a fine line. You know me, I'm pretty much a surgery advocate, I have to

learn to be accepting of those who need to wait. You always have good

points, and I learn from your sound advice, so good to have this group to

bounce things off of!

I'm doing fine, just hardware irritation, took about ten days to resolve

itself, pacing ones self is important, and I'm trying to live that lesson. I

had gotten myself so upset about Ceili, that it was such a relief to finally

get some good news about her. It will be a terrific Christmas this year, an

excellent gift!

Dear Sharon,

Thankyou for your nice message about Ceili, this was very good news indeed.

I have to learn the lesson that not everyone is wired like me. I looked at

this whole thing like something is wrong, now lets fix it. I just didn't

spend a lot of time weighing the whole thing over, I was ready for action,

wanted to be well yesterday. So hearing from you lets me know there is

another way to look at this, after 5 years I'm still learning. I havve to

let her do whats right for her, and get over what " I " think is right.

Well, , I like to think that my procrastination has bought me an

additional 5 years of experience on the part of the surgeon. But of course

everyone knows I'm really just scared s***less, LOL!

I think a lot has to do with pain level, and with how much disability one is

able to tolerate. I'm closer to my limit now, and also facing the fact that

I don't have a choice ultimately, unless I'd like to be completely crippled.

Sharon,

Spoken like a person about to make the decision to go ahead with revision surgery. That's the analysis I think most surgery-ready patients arrive at. It's hard to get there, and it's hard to be there, but maybe it's also a relief after all that agonizing. And to think there may be relief in sight!

Well said, Bonnie.

I met with my PCP today, and we discussed my visit with Dr. Rand and the prospect of surgery. I explained about the anterior stuff and how they take your guts out. And how that's nothing beside the thorasic anterior stuff they do in initial scoliosis operations... She seemed a little surprised, and I think it helped her understand my heel-dragging.

Thought I'd chime in with a question... Do some doctors only go Posterior or do they Always go Posterior and Anterior? Thank you! Sharon Green <sharon.green18@...> wrote: Well said, Bonnie. Ken...

It depends on the patient's spine.

Sorry, .

I can be awfully blunt. Well they do need to get at the anterior side of

your vertebrae, and there are quite a few organs in the way...

I honestly don't know. I suppose they pull stuff aside for the most part,

but intestines are all curled up in there so they can... I don't know... lay

them aside in some careful, hygenic manner and return them exactly as they

found them. That's what I prefer to think, and I'm not about to watch the

video!

Hi...

I've never actually seen an anterior lumbar surgery, but I think they

retract the entire abdominal contents to the side.
