Guest guest
ly, even after years of international travel and lots of foreign friends I just don't get soccer. I find it more interesting to watch the fans. To me the game is nothing but watching adults chase a ball around for a tediously long time for a final score of 0-0. But , in truth, I have never been big on sports in general. I played guitar. [ ] usa usa usa usa Hi all, Come on folks, its time to get behind YOUR team. USA are playing in the World Cup. Do you not understand the village mentality of football. Get the flags on your cars and houses to support your boys!! You have some world class players, support them to the hilt!!!! Some day you will understand and be an awesome team. [Editor's Note: Try as you might, Ian, it is hard to get Americans excited about soccer. I don't know why - it's a terrific sport that has a lot more action than American football and baseball put together - but it just doesn't seem to light our fire. As our population becomes increasingly Latino and African, we might actually start to see broader popularity of the sport on these shores. Until then, LET'S GO METS! The kids are having a league here later this year - maybe I should check it out. I'm a football girl. That's about it for me sports-wise. Hey Kathy, Don't forget to say GO JETS too *wicked grin*...unless *shudders* your a GIANTS fan!?!?! Guest guest
Hi Jenn and Kathy F, Two of my sons are GIANTS fans........Huddersfield Giants that is ....Rugby League....one tough brutal sport, like football without the pads and helmets....you have to be an absolute loon to play the damn sport. My youngest son plays at U15 level and is about two feet smaller than all the other players. As for soccer not taking off, there is probably so much money in football, baseball and basketball over there that there's not much need for another sport. Your ladies soccer team, on the other hand is one of the best in the world. The thing with men's soccer is that it is a global event and why Budweiser and Mc 's are major sponsors. If there was more money in soccer then more people would be attracted to it. By the way your lads got a creditable draw against Italy despite having two men sent off. There next game is against Ghana on Thursday 22 at 1600 CET. You dont have to be a soccer fan to show support, just get The Stars and Stripes out and fly the flag. Keep the light shining, Ian. > > Hey Ian, > > I don't know why - but I've never got into soccer. Guest guest
Hi Ronnie, Thank goodness there are people like you in the world. Life would be so boring if we all liked the same things. Even to me, some games are tedious 0-0 draws. Long may you play your guitar, I love music but I can't play anything, although, I do remember trying to learn the Cello when I was younger, and I love singing but I can't sing, well not a recognisable note anyway. I suppose I could sing with the crowd at a football match when no-one else will hear me. The light is still shining, Ian. > > ly, even after years of international travel and lots of foreign > friends I just don't get soccer. I find it more interesting to watch the > fans. Guest guest
Hey Ian and Kathy F., As for Piggott, Arkansas, the flags are already flying thanks to Flag Day and the big Fourth of July Picnic which is coming up. I'm sure there are a few keeping up with the World Cup, but more are watching the NBA Finals. Awwww, Kathy - why oh WHY did you have to use the word " FIE " ...giving me " Camelot " flashbacks! Besides, how can one be a traitor to NY if they're from Arky to begin with. GO #34! *hehe*...and I guess I should say GO #34 for the Carolina Panthers too while I'm at it. Jenn in Arkansas [Editor's Note: One of the least known but truly awful side effects of PA is that it can cause you to break into singing Broadway show tunes without warning. It seems to have mutated in Arkansas into rooting for NY sports teams. Where did the Panthers thing come from? That's a new variation of the disease. Guest guest
*Fie on Goodness, FIE* *LMAO*...Ohhhhh Kathy, the show tunes came first for me (speech/theatre major) but maybe that just means the onset of PA was earlier than thought...*wicked grin*. The mutation into rooting for a NY team is due to #34 - Cedric Houston. He was one of my students at CHS and I was one of his four senior class sponsors. Taught his sis as well and knew his mom back in the day...feisty lady...and Ced's a good kid. I don't care if he's in his 20's now - he'll always be a " kid " to me. Oh, as for the Panther variation - it could be found in the first round of this year's draft - DeAngelo - knew him at my other school. However, if the two were ever to face off in the Super Bowl *I know, in my dreams* - I'd be NY all the way...knew Ced much longer and better. Peace, Jenn in AR [Editor's Note: Jenn, thanks for the explanation. I'd root for those teams, too, given your knowledge of the players. Years ago, I knew a guy on the Mets ( " the Stork " Theodore) because he and my best friend used to date during high school in Utah. I need no excuse to root for the Mets, of course, since I was raised in Brooklyn and my family was still mourning the loss of our beloved Dodgers when they moved to LA. At least I got to go to ONE Dodgers game at Ebetts Field as a little girl. When the National League finally created another NY team, all the love we had for the Dodgers moved to the Mets. The Stork used to get us great player seats behind home plate at Shea. Too bad he was injured and then sent back to the minors - never to return. As for the Broadway show tunes - well, growing up in NYC meant going to Broadway plays as a kid and now you know the rest of the story. Guest guest
*LOL* Kathy, you referenced two in my repertoire. Did " Oklahoma " (chorus member) in eighth grade and " South Pacific " my freshman year (french girl on Bali Hai and nurses' chorus). Helped direct the 10th anniversary production of " Oklahoma " at the dear old high school after graduating. Played a nun in a production of " The Sound of Music " several years back as well. Wish I could get in on a production of my favorite R & H show sometime - that would have to be " Carousel " . Never got to do " My Fair Lady " ....yet....tuxes, etc. posed problem...BUT we always had a full orchestra on show nights, so that was pretty cool for a high schooler to get to sing with an orchestra. A friend about tripped while watching a video of our production of " Oliver! " when he heard the violins on " Reviewing The Situation " ...I guess he hadn't been paying attention up until then...which made me want to pop him. Betz, I " absobloominlutely " love storms too! It used to be my favorite way to spend a stormy evening (when I lived in Clarendon) to drive around town and up on the levee while listening to Jim Steinman's " The Storm " (from the Pandora's Box CD). It's " loverly " . Storms here today too. Hope it storms tomorrow - need footage of rain for a video I'm trying to make for a contest...I have no idea what I'm going to do yet and it's due next Friday if I'm going to enter...but the song it's to be set to is the Lovehammers " Rain On The Brain " so I imagine rain is as good a place to start as any...literal while the song is about an emotional sort of rain (i.e. part of the lyrics - " I need you to comfort my pain " ), but I think 'twill be effective...I want that autographed guitar that's being offered up as a prize! Remember girls - the Rain in Spain Stays Mainly On The Plain. (Side note to Ian, amazing how a conversation about soccer has morphed into one about show tunes, isn't it?) *hehe* Jenn in Arkansas [Editor's Note: I think we should rename Jenn " Li'l Broadway " . It's a good thing we changed the topic - the USA lost 2-1 to Ghana yesterday and we're out of the World Cup. But nevermind, because " I feel pretty, oh, so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and gay... " . Kathy F.]
Guest guest
Hey Betz, My rheumy says no, but my body says yes. I missed my re-dubbing. L'il Broadway, eh? *LoL*...too funny girls. Especially since I haven't treaded the boards in about two or three years now. The mention of " West Side Story " conjures up a memory of one the fave mishaps in a live show. You just never know what's going to happen. Well, I got the distinction of playing one of the four adults (changed " Glad Hand " the social worker with the dang whistle to a female for me to play) so I was able to watch most of the show from the wings. In addition to the evening shows with the orchestra we did performances during the school day for the kids with just a piano as accompaniment. Well, the way the girls were lined up for " America " was Anita (center front row) with the other two who sing in the song (lia (I think) - don't remember the other one's name...same ones in " I Feel Pretty " )...on each side of her. The rest of the Sharks' girls were lined up in a row behind them for the number. This was during the show for the middle school students btw (5th - 8th graders). Mid-number, the zipper goes out in Anita's dress. Dress comes open down the back exposing her bra and panties...WHILE she has her back turned toward the audience. Okay, she was mortified and quickly grabbed the back of the dress with one hand and went on with the number like a trouper. Needless to say, everyone backstage was dying. The girls on the back line were trying so hard to keep it together but losing the battle and the two on each side of her had no idea what had happened and why she wasn't doing the choreography right anymore. As soon as that curtain closed a laugh went up like you wouldn't believe. That mishap was better than when the gun didn't go off during Oklahoma to break up the fight between the cowboys and farmers at the box social, better than my friend Stu losing a shoe AND stepping on his bride's dress (ripping off a tier of the skirt in the process) during the big dance sequence in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and several others that I've seen over the years...that had to be the greatest play blooper to ever strike Piggott High School. I'm sure those kids who were in junior high remember it to this day. Jenn in Arkansas (Editor's Note: Jenn, your memories are so funny. When I was a teenager I was a lifeguard at a local pool. For the 4th of July, we put on a watershow called Wet Side Story. The fire escape scene took place on the 10 foot diving board. The rumble scene was done with water guns. The dance at the gym was a really pathetic water ballet. Officer Krupke was a lifeguard named Kuhne. It was dreadful but great fun and the patrons loved it.
