cala , I hope you are feeling better . I don " t know if I can post this info

on here or not but you guys out there . [don " t look !!!!. Doctors sometimes

will tell there patients who have yeast infections to soak a tampon in yogurt

and insert . you know where and leave in for a while . it is soothing and

is harmless . It is a home remedy that works . I imagine you would have to do

it a few times . I would get plain yougurt . anyway it will also help clear

yeast infection because of the acidophhilis [good bacteria] kills yeast .

harmless and cheap .and it works . a little messy but so is monistat. cathy

Carla, I'm so sorry that you are having to go through this

agony...you and your husband because I know this greatly effects him

as well. I usually make it a point to acknowledge every new person

who pops in. I don't know how I missed you except that I am having

trouble with my eyes...Iritis...and cannot see well right now. I

have only had one yeast infection and it was last spring in the

midst of my worst PA flare ever. So there I was scooting and

dragging my feet along (I could not lift my feet...ruined 3 pairs of

shoes during that flare!) in the pharmacy to get some Monistat cream

and the only person available to check me out was this kid who

looked 15 or 16...a young man. I was so afraid he would think I was

walking like that because of the yeast infection that I hung out in

the store for a bit waiting for someone else to come and relieve

him. lol. I'm 45. You'd think I'd be " over " this kind of thinking by

now. I got too tired from standing and leaning on things and waiting

so I HAD to just get it over with. And the cream did clear it up.

I'm wondering if since you and your husband have vision

difficulties why a local charitable organization could not help you

out with this. Have you tried calling Community Action or Social

Services (SS is usually overwhelmed but occasionally you might get a

kind hearted person on the phone...be sure and tell them that you

and your husband are blind right off the bat...I'm sorry but you

know as well as I do that it will make them listen even though I can

tell that it does not stop you from living your life). Have you

called your case manager for Medicare and asked if there was

anything that could be done to get temporary help in to see you?

Even if Medicare can't help you, they often have phone numbers of

agencies who CAN.

I hope this clears up for you soon. I'll keep you in my

prayers. -Betz

Carla,

I do in the stomach . I find after I get it well to use a good anti-perstant

Helps prevent it returning. P hates to be sweaty it makes it ITCH !

Keeping it dry helps a lot.

Hi Betz,

Thanks for your response. I don't know who to call other than medicare

themselves to ask about agencies to help...I got some info from the home

health care agency that i was using after my hospitalization for this the

last time but those are all agencies that you pay out of pocket. I don't

know that I have a medicare worker...or who it would be? hmm, I'm still

learning about this Medicare part D stuff. I mean I know the basics, but

this is a little more complicated to work with. My husband and I do not

qualify for help thru hhs...because of our income. The only things he is

involved with hhs on is his custody battle of his children as they are wards

of the state. Their might be some sort of resource, I'll have to see what I

can find. Other than friends, and his ex, I really don't have anyone to

help. Even with my friends, I don't want to overwhelm them. Thanks for

your prayers. I am going to see what the rheumatologist will do tomorrow.

I'm also going to research the biologics and yeast infections...and see if I

can understand this. Thanks for your help.

Hugs,

Carla

Hi Carol,

I also am a larger person...and understand what you mean about the extra

weight in the tummy...lol. Thanks for the idea of the anti

perspirant...I'll consider that..my husbands ex told me that also I just

need to see if my current anti perspirant will work...does it matter what

type of anti perspirant? I use Secret. Thanks a bunch! Wonder when I

should start to apply it? Should I go ahead and apply it now while the

redness is there? Thanks for your suggestion.

does anyone know about yeast infections and why they occur?

Has anyone else ever had reoccurring yeast infections as a result of

having psoriasis and pa?

Yeast LOVES warm, dark, moist places best to grow in. Which is why

babies and small children often get Candida/yeast infections in the

diaper area, and thrush (which is also Candida/yeast) in the mouth.

Also, why women tend to get vaginal yeast infections (again, think,

warm dark and moist.)

Everybody has bacteria on their skin and in their bowels normally.

When we take antibiotics, they not only kill the harmful bacteria

they were prescribed to get rid of (i.e., sinusitis, ear infections,

pneumonia, urinary tract infections) they also kill off the bacteria

that normally lives on our skin and in our bowels. Nature abhors a

vacuum, so without our healthy normal bacteria around to fight them

off, the Candida/yeast organisms have a holiday and grow like

wildfire into raging infections.

For several years, pediatricians used to tell parents to feed their

child yogurt ( " the kind with the active cultures " ...i.e.,

lactobacilli and acidophilus) daily while they were on antibiotics

in order to minimize such side effects as diarrhea, thrush, and

yeast diaper area infections. Recently a study came out that shows

that stomach acid often inactivates these active cultures before

they have a chance to get into the bowel and absorb there and work.

Therefore, the pediatricians in our practice have started

recommending the PROBIOTIC called Florastor to patients taking

antibiotics. In fact, they recommend it not only for antibiotics,

since it works very well, but also for things such as travelers'

diarrhea. It comes in packets of powder that can be stirred into

food or as capsules that can either be swallowed or opened and the

powder inside mixed into food.

Even without taking the antibiotics, our immune systems are

suppressed from the biologics and other meds we take to fight the PA

(steroids, Methotrexate, etc.) Adding antibiotics to fight

infections is just another whammy that leaves an opening for the

yeast/candida to start going to town. Which is another reason (the

first one being that the meds can make an infection worse if we stay

on them when we have infections) if we have signs/symptoms of

infection, we are supposed to tell our rheumatologists so we can

stop the medications while we take the antibiotics to clear up the

infection.

Some other things the pediatricians in our office recommend for

yeast infections:

Nystatin or Lotrimin cream to the skin or Nystatin orally for the

mouth. MUST be taken four times a day (using it less often will not

clear the infection as well) and should be continued for about one

week after the yeast is gone (yeast is stubborn, and often when you

think it's gone it likes to come back.)

Keeping the diaper area clean and dry and open to air as much as

possible.

A baking soda Sitz bath (about 2 ounces of baking soda in about 2

inches or warm water in a basin or tub) for 20 minutes twice daily.

If the skin is very raw and irritated, you can also paint plain

white liquid Maalox or Mylanta on it, use a blow dryer on the lowest

coolest setting to dry it faster, and then apply a protective cream

of your choice over that (A & D, Aquaphor, Dr. 's, Triple Care

Paste, whatever.) The cream needs to be applied thickly. When you

soil it with urine or feces, you only remove the topmost layer (just

the SOILED area) Don't take it all the way down to the skin each

time unless you have to (if it is soiled all the way down to the

skin). Taking the barrier creams off the skin too often just defeats

the purpose of putting them on.

Another thing that doctors used to prescribe in the old days before

Nystatin and Lotrimin cream was available was Gentian Violet

solution (to be painted on the skin or swabbed in the mouth.) It

stained like crazy, and I don't even think they make it any more,

because Nystatin and Lotrimin and the other antifungals work so much

better.

Hope this helped. Feel better soon!

Bright blessings. Wanda

Wanda gave an excellent rundown on the causes and treatments for recurrent

yeast infections. I would add that a diet rich in simple sugars and finely

divided starches can contribute to recurrent yeast infections. So if you have

problems with yeast infections avoid sugar, corn syrup or other sugar packed

foods and opt for whole grains rather than white flour. Less commonly local pH

imbalances can make an area more habitable for yeast to thrive. Modification

of urinary pH is the primary reason why cranberry juice is often recommended

when battling urinary tract infections. Most often the offender is

antibiotics though which set you up for yeast overgrowth by eliminating

competitive

organisims. Orin

Carla,

I used to get a lot of yeast infections.

Are you diabetic? When my sugars where high I got the infections.

My ob-gyn had me stop eating anything sugary or sweet and anything made with

yeast. All breads, rolls, and most crackers. Basically no desserts and

very few fruits until it's under control.

This won't cure the problem, but it will slow it down.

Good Luck,

Hi Wanda,

Wow! That was a lot of helpful info, some of which I already new of...but

I'll save this for future reference. I'm doing better thanks. I have a

curiosity question which I will post to the group separately...but thanks

for your suggestions.

No I am not diabetic. I dont' eat enough fruit in my diet I am sure, but I

will have to cut back on my desserts a bit...lol. I'll keep this thought in

mind though as I try to fight this. Thanks for your suggestions.
