I posted originally a few weeks ago right after my husband was injured in a fall, and received the nicest responses from everyone to my post. I wanted to say thank you and let you all know it means a lot . Since that time, they sent him home for home care and PT a week earlier than originally intended ...yikes, was I scared about that lol. Anyway he came home almost 2 weeks ago and is recovering here. He has a brace and honestly complains more about pain from coming off the anesthesia and general discomfort all over than he does about the pain in his back. I expect that his back may hurt more as time goes along just because the anesthesia fully wearing off and stuff. My son has adjusted fairly well too. They squabled a bit back and forth because dad was really crabby the first day or two after he came home ( I don't blame him), but once we got a hospital bed in here and started developing a routine things started to turn around. Before we got that bed, man was it hard trying to get him up and down, but now we're doing that at record speeds too LoL. I've honestly been so busy that I don't think it's all really sunk in yet. I'm honestly surprised by how well he is doing, and the only time he seems to get really overtaken with pain is after his physical therapy. His injury was to the T12 and the vertebra below it. He shattered the t12 and had to have a bone graft done with one of his ribs, and a cage built around the two of them. Has anyone here had a surgery/injury similar? I'm curious because I'd kind of like to know from someone who's gone through it. Also for those of you who've had the pleasure of those turtle shell braces, how often do they tend to have to be adjusted? I know it depends on weight loss etc, but he's only been home two weeks and already saying that it is feeling funny and not fitting right... seems kind of soon. I hope that the adjustments dont' have to be made every two weeks, the place is over an hour away. yikes! Anyway, he'll be in a brace for 3 months and pt twice a week until then, and then I guess we'll see what happens. Again, thanks to everyone who replied to me, I do honestly appreciate it, and I hope to be here more now that things are settling down a bit When he can sit comfortably for awhile I'm sure he'll be anxious to get in here and read too. Blessings, Christin Christin, I shattered my t-12 and disk above it. I also damaged the disk below and above t-11. I was in a turtle shell brace for almost 4 months and have just started PT. I lost about 30 pounds during the first 2 months and I just velcored my brace tighter. I found that if I rolled from side to side while putting it on I could get it tighter then just laying flat. I fortunately did not have to have surgery at the time of my fall, but I might be having the cement injection soon if I do not start to improve better in the next few weeks. I find it hard to sit for long periods of time as my tail bone still hurts and my back burns all the time. I have been told that PT should help the burning. Tell you husband that I know just how he feels and he is not alone. in Clearwater, FL
Guest guest
Hi all, Sorry about the delay in responding, but a trip to my rhumy wiped me out for almost 2 days. Thank you all for your support. I am still waiting for approval for Enbrel Quick Assist ( A grant that helps offset the copay for Enbrel). Hopefully I will know next week if I can get started. It's already been approved through my insurance so I am crossing my fingers. I am a bit confused by my rhumy appt. My MRI scanes show 3 discs in my Thoratic and 2 discs in my lumbar spine with degeneration. But because my sacrosyllic (spelling?) joints are not showing degeneration, he is not certain that psoriatic arthritis is the cause. But because of my obvious skin condition he won't rule it out. He believes Enbrel will help with my skin, but not my back pain. And he recommends physical therapy (light) to help with pain and fatigue. I told him I had applied for disability and he said nothing....no affirmation, no dissent. So I am not sure what to think. On the upside....The weather is cooling here. (Yayyyyyyyyyy!~) My dahlias and canna lilies are starting to bloom. (We'll just ignore the weeds and grass growing up around them that I can't get down there to pull) <panning up 12 inches> Yes, they are lovely. LOL I am curious as to what your favorite snack foods are. One of my favorites sounds completely disgusting, but is ohhhh so yummy! You will need: Triscuits Velveeta Cheese (sliced to fit cracker) petite smoked oysters 1 lime sliced thin (with or without skin) salt Layer in the order given, salt to taste. Try and eat the whole thing in one bite. (I usually break the triscuits in half before layering) It sounds revolting, but it is to die for! Guest guest
Sandi.....I think you need a pregnancy test. Where in the flying flip did you get a recipe like that??? lol. I can't really talk though...I have a recipe for fudge using Velvetta cheese. But I'm from the south. I hope the Enbrel grant comes through for you quickly. Listen.....what your Rheumy thinks and what will really happen can be two different things. Mine is cool enough to express her hopes for what might occur with my treatment and wise enough to know and say that she is constantly surprised at the turns this disease takes and just when she thinks she's seen it all...wham...it presents itself differently in someone. There's a chance that the Enbrel WILL make your back better of course so that's what we will hope for. Enbrel has improved Soooooo many things for me...things I did not expect it to. It took 4-6 weeks for me to see REAL results but everyone is different. It can take up to 3 or 4 months for some so be prepared to be patient. Are you getting the new auto-injectable syringe? It's out on the market now. The old self injecting syringe takes me a minute to a minute and a half to slowly inject in order to minimize the burn. You just sit there and watch a show or listen to a song or sing a song...watching to make sure that a little blood does not get in the needle (that won't kill you but you'll have to stop that injection if it happens and call Enbrel. They are VERY helpful). The new auto inject syringe takes 15 seconds. It might not be less painful the Enbrel nurse told me but at least it's much quicker and less stressful. You might want to look into it and request that your Rheumy write the RX for that type. I spoke to the Enbrel nurse about it last week. Best wishes with all of this. -Betz > > > > Hi all, > > Sorry about the delay in responding, but a trip to my rhumy wiped > me out for almost 2 days. Guest guest
I was wiped out after my rheumy appointment last Friday too. I was so exhausted that I still don't feel like I recovered. That is an interesting combination of items to put together for a snack! I've never even tried an oyster before. How did you come up with those foods put together? I'm not knocking it until I try it though. I used to make this dish for Thanksgiving called an Apple Cheddar casserole that was basically apple pie filling with a Velveeta cheese, sugar concoction baked on top. No one in the family would eat it, but to me it was pure heaven. So good! I usually ended up eating it all over the course of several days. Shoot, now I'm probably going to have to make it now because I'll be craving it...... > > > > Hi all, > > Sorry about the delay in responding, but a trip to my rhumy wiped > me out for almost 2 days.
