Hey Wallace,

Good to see you on the board again!

Let us know how the D3 experiment works out.

My LLMD advocated me taking cod liver oil with vitamin D so that's

what I've been doing lately.

Then again, I live in Colorado where we get tons of sun and I'm

outside all the time, so I should probably be careful of getting too

much.

Just an FYI for everyone...I heard that salmon oil has soooo much more

Omega 3's than cod liver oil, yet I can't find a really good, pure

brand of salmon oil at my local vitamin store. any thoughts?

Thanks,

Connie

Thank

you very much for taking the trouble to post all of this information P. I hope

you don't mind but I have copied it and put it into our FILES so that any other

member who fiends they also have low Vitamin D can go and read this info and

benefit from it.

This position statement is from my country and if you want, you

could print it out and hand it to your doctor to prove how important

it is to supplement with Vit D if you have low levels. It was

written by Working Group of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and

Mineral Society, Endocrine Society of Australia and Osteoporosis

Australia, so these are all well respected 'mainstream' groups.

http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/182_06_210305/dia10848_fm.html

There is a well established link between Osteoporosis and Vitamin

D. I would strongly recommend that you ask your doctor for a bone

density scan to work out whether your bones have been affected by

the low Vit D levels. My doctor made sure that I had a scan. In

fact they insisted on it. Don't worry though - I had low VitD

levels however my bone density was fine. Whew for that! It is

worth spending the money on a bone density scan especially with such

a low Vit D result as yours.

Hi everybody

I have been trying out vitamin D3 because I read on the dr mercola site that he

thought

that flu was a symptom of a vitamin D3 deficiency, so I decided to order some

off ebay (I

got the 1,000 iu because it was there and it was easy, and I felt as if I was

going down

with something).

It came quite quickly, 2 days, but by then I had already had a couple of days

feeling a bit

rough like a very heavy head cold and had to rest up and spend time in bed. The

day it

came I took 3 pills, 3,000iu, and the cold started to clear up a bit, it could

have been a

coincidence. The following day I took 4 pills and had a bit of a 'hyper' about

an hour later,

that is palpitations that lasted about 4 hours. I think it was the vitamin D3

as there was

not much else it could have been, as I have been very steady with the armour on

my low

dose since before christmas. I missed out my afternoon armour dose, and am back

to

normal this morning. The cold seems to be a lot better though.

Is this a normal thing to happen on vitamin D, can anyone explain how this is

interacting

with the hypothyroid condition or the medicine?

I have read that we use up around 4,000iu daily, and I'm not sunbathing much lol

so why

did it react this way. I should have expected to take a couple of these pills a

day and tried

to build up my reserves, and now I feel must hold back. I haven't had a test

done but felt

quite sure that I would be deficient since I've hardly seen a sunny day for a

couple of

years.

No worries Sheila. If you have added my comments to the file, could

you please add something like 'written by a forum member, so please

check with your doctor' or something like that? I always think that

is really important to add because everyone's body is different.

The general position statement is really useful though and I'm

certain about the link about low Vit D and osteoporosis etc, and I'm

also certain about the necessary blood test to test for Vit D

deficiency, so that stuff is very useful for people to know about.

Some of the other stuff is based on my experience only (ie. my

dosage regime etc) so that might not suit everyone else, hence my

advice that people check with their doc.

Just out of interest, you might not want to be sitting on my back

porch with me today Sheila. A while back I offered to 'take you

away' from the cold country you live in, so you could sit out the

back with me and share a cool drink (probably white tea or filtered

water given the healthy stuff I am having these days!!!)in the warm

country of Oz. It is certainly living up to its reputation of being

a warm country today!!!! About three hours ago the temperature hit

106.5 deg fahrenheit here (41.4 deg celcius), so it is a sweltering

day. It is really dry and hot. I'm sitting inside with the blinds

drawn to try and keep the house cool. It's doing nothing for my Vit

D levels sitting in the dark, but it sure is keeping me cool!!!!!

Quite right, it is not a commercial site. However, I contacted them

to ask what form of Vitamin D they recommended and found out that it

was possible to buy some by sending a cheque in the post. Dr Myhill's

address, telephone and fax numbers are on the home page.

Hi P - this is automatically placed

And NO P - I will definitely not take you

up on your offer to sit on your back porch with temperatures hitting 106 .5 degrees

- we hit minus 7 degrees the other day, and our central heating had broken down

at that time, though it has been mended now, thank heaven. We need something

between the two temperatures and then I would be very happy.

Then

write to the Chief Executive of the Hospital this endocrinologist works in and

tell him of your predicament. If your endocrinologist says you need D3 NOW,

then you need it NOW - and the secretary will just have to pull her finger out

and type the letter your doctor needs. You could first try emailing the

secretary to tell her of your intentions, I am sure she would not like to be

reported, and that might just do the trick. Tough if she can't keep on top of

her work, if it is too much for her, she should ask for help, but this is

risking patients lives.

I'm

really serious about this - either telephone this secretary and tell her

of your intention and keep it VERY business like, or write direct to the Chief

Executive.

Let

us know how you get on

Hi, I've just looked all over the net for a

supplier of Vitamin D3 in a high dose and I'm just more confused now. My

endo has written a letter to my gp saying that I need D3 NOW (my count is

23) and I told my gp this and he says that he needs to see the letter as

" you have to be careful when prescribing D3 " , and all that's ok except my endos secretary has just

informed me that letters are taking FIVE weeks plus to get to gp's.....!!!!

So I need to get hold of some D3 now,

preferably a high dose ( I can't afford the 50,000iu tabs from the US)...........

any UK suppliers y'all recommend please ?

thank youuuuu,

julia

Why is it not possible, in this day and age, for the secretary to send a short email to the doctor saying that the consultant has prescribed D3 - the dose etc. to be taken immediately and that she will be sending a letter of confirmation in due course.

What puzzles me is why the consultant didn't write you out a prescription to be getting on in the meantime.

This has ALWAYS happened to me when a consultant has suggested a change of medicine. He writes out a month's supply (or however long he thinks the letter will take to get to the doctor).

Did you have any luck with the secretary. Perhaps you need to let her

know that your VitD levels were extremely low and you are worried

about the impact on your health if there is a delay. That might make

her hurry it along.

Hi

I have only just received your response as for some reason some of the messages go into "SPAM" NO idea why?????????? I have looked at vit D levels as I am obviously very keen to be taking all correct vits to help myself so would be very grateful for your help.It says Vit D = 78nmol/L (48-144) Zinc 16.8umol/L (11.0-24.0) Magnesium= 0.95mmol/L (0.70-1.00) Ferritin = 77ug/L (14-186)

If you can make sense of all that you are a better man than I Kind regards and ta for help xxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Margaret,

have you had your D3 tested and if so, what was your result ? If you are just 'winging it' you need to be cautious as anything over 1400 iu a day can decrease renal function in some people and cause nephrocalcinosis.

- why don't you edit your membership and change from receiving Individual

Emails to a Daily Digest. You get up to 25 messages in just one Email. You can

do this by going to the Home Page, and towards the left of the screen, above

the dark broad bar, click on 'Edit membership' then on the page that opens,

check the 'Daily Digest' box, and then click 'Save Changes'.

Don't forget that any form of iron or calcium supplements should

be taken at least four hours away from your thyroid hormone supplementation.

your GP should

be able to give you D3 on scrip, but they give it as a calcium D3 combo. The D3

is only 200mg (which I believe is now the 'legal' amount in the UK) but you can

buy stronger D3 on-line. What is your D3 result....? Have you read the

vit D section in the FILES ? You can buy 50,000 iu from the states (bit pricey)

which you take once a week for six weeks to restore levels. I had the combo

from the doc but to be honest, hope you're not having your lunch, the calcium

in them made me really constipated. I switched to 'Life Extension' Vitamin D3,

5,000iu which I bought on Ebay at a very reasonable price.

harmonised with the EU, but at the 'wrong amount' in line with vit A (for which this latter tends to become more easily toxic)

vit D3 would be better at 500 - 1000 IU in view of the relatively large amounts needed (by sun exposure).

but caution is needed if Marshall's Protocol is used (minimise vit D3 exposure ~ and use of Benecar).

Hi Jane

I find it disgusting, like chewing on lemon chalk and can only manage to take 1

a day rather than the 2 prescribed as it makes me want to gag. Do you like it?

I presume you have to take 2 also so that would give you 800 IU of D3, again I

can only presume that is ok, I really dont know.
