My son's bio-brother has tourettes and we have often questioned if does also. So hard to differentiate voluntary behavior and involuntary with . The doctor observed some behaviors (jaw cracking & stretching for example) that looked like possibly Tourette's. We started on Adderall to deal with ADD and CAPD. It has been very successful - and his overall anxiety level has been greatly decreased. Also most of his tic-like behaviors have spontaneously dis appeared. So I'ld be especially aware if your child has been diagnosed with Tourette's - yet the meds don't help - that something else could be going on. Certainly axiety can trigger tic-like mannerisms. Also if the kids are teasing him it looks like an intervention is called for - to explain to the kids what Tourette's is. Your child is not the last person they will ever run into with this disease and they need education on what Tourette's is. If the teacher is not intervening about " respecting all difference " then you'll need to take the lead. While some of the behaviors are behavioral and attention getting, others seem like it and are not. There is so much going on in their little systems and they are working so hard to try to MAINTAIN. .. that sometimes it triggers more tics or spontaneous sounds. They are on some medications and they help sometimes, and while it's very difficult to be around their behaviors at times, it's important that we look past the outward appearances and get to know their personalities. The principal was the first to question if it was really the tourettes or just a clever way of behaving to get what she wanted. Well, it turns out to be behavioral and they have an aid avaialbe to remove her from class at anytime. It is working. However, Bridget has picked up on some of these behaviors and I have to correct her at home by telling her she is not and to stop doing ..... I think that if we offer kids support and coping techniques rather than consequences and punishment we get much further in addressing all behaviors. Don't get me wrong. Guest guest Posted September 28, 2009 Report Share Posted September 28, 2009 We suspected Tourettes (primarily due to strong motor tics that seem to travel and not stay on one body part) but after further testing and diagnosing he has been diagnosed with PANDAS. The symptoms (other than tics) are rather distinct between the two so you might want to look through PANDAS symptoms to rule that out. Removal of aspartame, enzyme therapy and (especially) olive leaf extract have resolved all tics for several years. She's 14 and recognizes ocd-ish thoughts as the precursor to tics. I keep her on a maintenance dose of ole and she lets me know if she needs extra. We also use a lot of transdermal magnesium, which probably contributes to our success. She is basically recovered except for the " flapping " which is accompanied by her whole body tensing. Her OCD stuff was helped with OLe and I just started her again. It just seemed to me that this movement or tic by itself seems more of a Tourettes thing now. My son also makes strange " skier " type movements with yelling when he is excited.
