Guest guest
Hay Sandi, I can pretty much say that almost everyone on this group has felt, and some still do, like you do right now. This path with our children is long and hard, but once you get going and get in the right hands, you will see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and everything turns around. It is these moments of not knowing who to listen to who to trust and the entire time you keep looking at your childs back saying " The clock is ticking and his back just keeps getting worse " . The most important thing right now is for you to keep your thoughts on whats ahead. 1st, you will find a wonderful doctor, but one that you have to show you know what you are talking about and you are not afraid to ask questions. 2nd. getting the right treatment. As you have already seen we are all pushing the POP casts, they are by far the best way to go to help bring that curve down and control it. 3rd. To breath and enjoy all these moments with your child. Before you know it things will be going well and you need to just let your child be a child and enjoy every moment of him. Make sure he doesn't sense your stress and concern, they are smart and will start feeling bad, knowing that something is bothering you and they are part of the reason. Start spending as much time as possible investigating and researching everything there is about scoliosis, research the doctors what have they written, what do they know. Write down all your questions, and don't don't ever leave without asking them all, no matter how much you think you are annoying or bothering the doc, he is there for YOU and your SON, no more no less. Keep your thoughts positive Sandi and just remember you are not alone on this path and we are all here to help you with whatever problems you encounter, because most likely someone here has gone through the same. Good luck and my prayers are with you and your son, Kelli and Santiago " *\\o/* San *\\o/* " wrote: To recap - was dx'd with a 70 degree curve early June. There are doctors who do casting and doctors who do Mehta casting, correct? And in order to do Mehta casting do they HAVE to have some sort of specialized equipment? Guest guest
Hi Sandi, Please go to the FILES section of this group to read the article " Growth as a Corrective Force in the Early Treatment of Progressive Infantile Scoliosis, " by Mehta. May I also recommend that you take a look at the " New Direction " dvd. This educational dvd will help you understand the principles behind the Early Treatment process. Serial plaster casts have always been used in effort to control the curve, as a last ditch effort at maintenance, or to hold a fusion/procedure. Dr. Mehta has dedicated her entire career to the non surgical treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis and recently published her study in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery. Early Treatment is new in the orthopaedic world, and that is why its hard to get answers. Yes, to apply a cast to a baby/small child the appropriate size casting frame is best. I will be in the office today, if you are available to chat on the phone. My office # is, If I am out to lunch, pls leave a msg., and I will return your call asap. Hang in there. We will help you to get the answers you need. HRH > To recap - was dx'd with a 70 degree curve early June. Guest guest
Hi Sandi, It's understandable that you are feeling overwhelmed. I felt the same way when I began doing my research after Ian was diagnosed. (((HUGS))) Yes, there are different types of casting. Basically, the Mehta method uses a table designed specifically for children versus the other tables (I think called cotrell or striker or something like that) which are made for adults. Her method treats it 3 dimensionally...basically treating the rotation which is what causes the curve. If you just treat the curve and not the rotation, you are treating the symptom, but not the cause. The places that I know of (and there may be others) that were trained by Mehta are the Shriners in Erie, Dr. D' at the Philly Shriners, Salt Lake City Shriners, Dr. D'Amato at Portland Shriners, Dr. Kishan at Loma , and Dr. Khoury at the Children's Hospital in Birmingham, AL. If anyone knows of others that I left out, please chime in! I don't know for sure about Dr. Sturm. I thought he was waiting to be trained, but I think Aekta or would know. I think he is currently out on medical leave right now anyway. Feel free to email me any time if you want to chat: noellesmommy@.... Guest guest
Sandi, I can confirm that Chicago does NOT have the equipment needed for the Mehta type of casts. They are hoping to get an ETP soon, but currently it was Cx. I saw Dr. Strum for a follow up appt. for Cole. They do do casting, but it is not with the AMIL table. In my opinion it will, not get the correction you want for . If you want a Shriner's Hospital to see , Call Erie- PA, Philly-PA, SLC-UT, Portland-OR or maybe contact for the upcoming ETP in NY. It seems like people are getting into Erie pretty quickly, but I'd call all of them to find out the wait. Hang in there, if you call Erie, ask for Dr. Sander's phone message, and leave him a detailed message with your sons age and degree of curve. maybe he can pull some strings and get you in ASAP. Best of luck. At 70 degrees, waiting 6 months is NOT an option! " *\\o/* San *\\o/* " wrote: To recap - was dx'd with a 70 degree curve early June. Guest guest
Hi Sandi, Max sees Dr. Sturm and has seen Dr. twice when Dr. Sturm was on medical leave. Although Chicago does not have the correct AMIL frame, I find it interesting Max was getting more correction in Chicago and none in Erie with Dr. . I believe your son and Max are in similar boats with high degree curves (although different locations). Dr. Sturm is very honest and not misleading. Your converation with him was a fortunate one to have. Maybe not the answer you wanted to hear. Dr. Sturm is a fanatastic doctor and I think deserves more credit than he is getting in this group. , I am so happy for Cole that has achieved the correction he has, but there us parents out there who aren't so fortunate. A 60 lumbar degree curve like Max's or 70 thoracic degree curve like Sandi's son in reality will not fully correct with solely casting. If we can reach even the goal of prolonging the need for surgery by casting, then it's worth it. How long has Cole been seeing Dr. Sturm. I wasn't aware Cole was his patient. That's great. I hope you are having a very positive experience with Dr. Sturm as we are. Perhaps we can chat soemtime. i love to get your perspective based on your experience both in Erie and Chicago liek we ave recently experienced. Guest guest
Aekta , Cole started out with an almost 50 degree curve and 52 RVAD. He did all his castings (8 total) in Erie with Dr. Kisham and Dr. K. They were able to get him all the way to zero and is currently in a brace. He only goes to Chicago Shriner's because he is 7 months into the brace and almost out growing it. He remains at 0 degrees. At this point of his treatment we don't feel like we need to travel to Erie anymore just for x-rays and check ups. As for my perspective between Erie and Chicago. Well, first let me say that Shriner's Hospitals in general are AMAZING. As for Dr. Sturm himself. I don't want to bad mouth him. I'm sure he is nice, BUT his bedside manner to us was not very warm and kind. He was a little offended when I asked him about getting the frame for casting procedures, saying " we have done casting here for a long time that works just as good " . One staff person said to us, " Wow you are LUCKY to see Dr, Sturm, he is the chief doctor here you know. " Why does that matter? He didn't spend much time with us, didn't even talk to Cole, only to me about the x-rays. We were in the small room for over and hour before Dr. Sturm came into see us and then he talked to me for 3-5 minutes. That never happened in Erie, We always waited less than 5 minutes. The nurses at Erie always brought new toys in for Cole to play with. I know I am a little Erie biased and not all hospitals are as warm and fuzzy. But the Erie staff gave my sons life back, and we will always be indebted to them. Dr. Sturm did say he was hoping to get Dr. Mehta to Chicago soon. As for Max getting improvement in Chicago with out the frame. I think that is fantastic. But I will always believe the AMIL frame, in general, will give better results over all. Because of its design and function for smaller kids, how can it not? Also, does Max's Chicago casts have the hole out of the back? I don't know if it does, but that hole also aids in the correction of the ribs and spine. Most casting docs do not do that. I also believe that depending on age of the child when the casting is started, even some of the higher degrees of curves can be corrected. It may take a lot longer, but IS possible, again depending on age. If Cole's curve would have been 10 degrees more (around 60), I know he would still have been fully corrected. He started casting at 8 months. We have been at this for almost two years now and I have research and read a lot, and this is the future for infantile scoliosis. I just think if you are a parent, why not go where numerous kids have gone and been corrected in the past few years if you can? I'd rather go to docs that have corrected a lot a infants rather than just a few. Hope I haven't offended anyone by my post. I am very passionate about the Mehta procedure and want all kids to obtain the correction Cole has achieved if at all possible. Aekta , where do you live? We live in Naperville? Guest guest
Hi Marjorie!     Man sister am I with ya!! I know exactly how you feel. Probiotics is on my mind too right now. I just bought 2 boxes of threelac and for me it works pretty good, it takes away my stomach aches most of the time, but for my son...I just feel since he exhibits all of the yeast symptoms and signs ALLLLLLLL of the time that I need something more than just 1 billion cfu's per packet .. so I think I'm going to go back to the VSL#3 which is 450 billion cfu's per packet. I mean think of that ... 1 vs. 450!!! Don't know what I was thinking when I ordered the threelac. That's just my 2 cents and the direction I think i'm headed in, don't know if it helps or not .. Hope you find some peace with all this soon! God Bless, Rose ________________________________ From: Marjorie St <MTAHmom@...> Sent: Tuesday, August 25, 2009 4:59:12 PM Subject: [ ] so overwhelmed  I'm overwhelmed and don't know where to start. Actually, I know where to start... I'm going to start with probiotics.. . There are SO many choices for just this one thing though! Which is the best? Which is a total waste of money? Should I get Culturelle? Is there something better? Just as good? Guest guest
We use these after using some other ones. Kinda a compromise. 10 strains, 20 billion CFUs. And cheap. They have a " residual trace " of milk, but my boys don't seem to have an issue with it. http://www.vitacost.com/NSI-Probiotic-10-20 TJ ________________________________ From: Rose Rudolph <roserudolph55@...> Sent: Tuesday, August 25, 2009 3:19:19 PM Subject: Re: [ ] so overwhelmed  Hi Marjorie!     Man sister am I with ya!! I know exactly how you feel. Guest guest
I've been there - and the first probiotic I tried was Threelac too. But turns out my son is a PANDAS kid who cannot take any strep thermophilus, a probiotic that is in a lot of formulations. He became totally OCD after taking Threelac once! He's OK with Custom Probiotics Lactate-free powder (expensive but good), Klaire Infant Formula powder (tastes OK but weaker concentration), Mindlinx powder and Jarrow EPS (easier to find, enteric capsules but a bit big, not easy to swallow). TJ, love the pricing on your probiotic but unfortunately it has s. thermophilus too...
