Guest guest
If you are SCD, sweet potatoes are out. I replace them with turnips, rutabaga, and acorn squash which is kind of sweet like sweet potaotes. Just some ideas you might can try. [ ] Does sweet potato react like potato? Guest guest
Best thing to do is an elimination diet. Just don't feed any sweet potatoes for about two weeks, then give it to him and see how he does. That's really the only way to tell. I have a lot of foods I have to rotate - even for me - because we're just so dang sensitive to everything. Guest guest
You can try cauliflower -- steam it or lightly boil it and put it in a blender or mash them. Same type of mashed potato taste and texture. Guest guest
My son doesn't do potato or sweet potato. I have a recipe for using celery root instead of mashed potatoes. Basically you chop up the root, boil the pieces and then mash them up with GFCF margarine. They taste great and are whippy like mashed potatoes. Problem is, celery is high in oxalates so it bothers but I love them. Just goes to show, these kids are so sick and different what works for one, might not for the other. I wanted to mention the oxalate problem with the sweet potatoes because I used to give him freshly mashed ones or fresh sweet potato fries with his lunch before OT. He could barely make it up the stairs and he groaned like his joints were aching. The therapist thought it was just his balance, but on days he wouldn't get the sweet potatoes he would run and jump with no problems. So, here I had a kid in ST and gym that was thriving and the next day in OT he was a lump. They attributed it to " that's just autism " . Yes, I'm sure. LOL. After some research, I found the link between painful joints and high oxalates so I cut the sweet potatoes (and spinach juice) before the OT. A different kid. So many things to think about. Just thought I would share in case it helps someone. Hugs, > > > > Along the lines of the potato sensitivity question: Do those of you who react to potato also react to sweet potato? Guest guest
On the SCD diet, yet another reason why it made my daughter sick....the only vegetable she wasn't allergic to was sweet potato, talk about a comedy of errors...that diet was horrible for her because it banned the foods she wasn't allergic to like sugar, and replaced it with her most highly allergic foods. I am investigating my son's options since I am going to keep him from potatoes. My son did not tolerate potatoes until I gave them with Zyme Prime enzyme. Then he could eat potatoes. My son did not tolerate sweet potatoes, even with the enzyme, because his body did not convert carotenes. Once I gave him the supps required for the body to convert carotenes, then he could eat sweet potatoes. Dana
