My entire family contracted the flu last month. My husband, who never gets sick and never misses work, was on his back and out for a week. Then I got it and ditto. Then, when my three year old spiked a 103.5 degree fever and started crying saying he hurt and his head hurt, I whipped out the Oscillicoccinum and told him it was candy. He took it happily. He was sick for two days. On the third day he was running circles around me while I was still sick. I am glad this stuff worked on him. My husband and I took it and I don't think we took it in time - You have to take it within 24 to 48 hours of your initial symptoms. The book Everybody's Guide to Homeopathy says that it stimulates your own immune system to fight the flu. If you take it too late and there isn't enough left in your immune system, it won't work. I took Rhus Tox and Belladona for my own symptoms and got great relief, but not a "cure". I also gave my son Belladona for his fever with great success. I know have a packet of Osc. in my medicine cabinet that doesn't expire until 2005. We'll be ready next year!

It is homeopathic and the marketing claims that its effective against colds,

flus, and perhaps other viral illnesses.

The product was founded by a French doctor and contains homeopathic extracts

from the heart and liver of Barbarie ducks (at the root, it's supposed to

contain an isolated microbe taken from ducks that is the same as in patients

who had the Spanish flu, obviously in watered down greatly as in all homeopathic

remedies).

It's widely used in Europe and some people swear by it (my DH uses it and swears

that it helps him fight colds). I've never really caught on to homeopathy and

have never experienced results with it nor seen any in my kids through

homeopathic treatments, so I wouldn't buy it.

People talk about studies that were conducted on it in Europe, one in France

apparently (double blind, placebo controlled) where patients had a slightly

better recovery rate than patients given the placebo. So a lot of people here

swear by it in France and I believe that at one time it may have been covered by

social security as treatment (some homeopathic remedies here are still covered).

It's suitable for kids, mine have taken it in the past though I admit that for

me & the kids, I consider it a waste of money!

We use it at the first onset of flu and during the flu or as a preventative. We

only use 2-3 pellets per dose which makes it last much longer. It is homeopathic

so you can't use food 15-30 minutes before and after taking it and things like

mint or the smell of strong cleaners will antidote it. Someone who thinks it is

a waste of money in my opinion is probably doing something to antidote the

remedy unknowingly.

Hi, Priscilla,

My homeopathic DAN doctor swears by it.  Said it's very effective when taken at

the first sign of flu. I think she said good for children too.

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Just a note on Oscillo ...

It can help in the early stages of the flu, as long as it is within the

first 24 - 48 hours, but only for younger people. It is not of much help

for older people.

The homeopathic remedy that best matches the symptoms of the sufferer

works much better and faster (for young and old) than the shot-gun

approach of Oscillo but Oscillo is certainly better than nothing.

Oscillo will not prevent the flu, however.

This was shown in research. Check the Cochrane database that analysed

all available research on Oscillo.

Hi ,

Oscillococcinum is a 'homeopathic' remedy in as much as it is a

potentised remedy. Potentisation is the process by which remedies are

made and consists of repeated stages of dilution and vigorous shaking -

the dilution gradually removes the molecules of the original substance

that the remedy was prepared from while the shaking imprints the

energetic information of the original substance into the liquid.

With each stage, that information is not only imprinted but enhanced so

the remedy acts more strongly than the original substance could BUT

because of the serial dilution, harmful toxic effects cannot take place.

More info about this process can be read in the tutorials on the

Homeopathy Plus! site - link found in my signature line.

Oscillococcinum is the proprietary name of the remedy made from

potentised ducks liver (ducks often being carriers of flu viruses that

are often concentrated in the liver). I described it as a 'shot-gun'

approach because it is prescribed on the basis that there is some sort

of relationship between flu viruses and people infected by the flu - and

it is often helpful but as mentioned earlier, only in the first 24 - 48

hours and for younger half of the population.

The true homeopathic approach though is to more precisely match the

remedy to the individual's symptoms. This has a cleaner, more targeted,

and deeper acting treatment than the shot-gun approach.

If you read some of the flu articles (written around the time of the

bird flu scare) at http://homeopathyplus.com.au/hplus/flu-watch/ you

will find they discuss some of those remedies and the type of flu

symptoms they match.

To provide more information, a more extensive list of flu remedies and

the symptoms they treat will be placed on the page tomorrow with

instructions on how and how often the remedy should be used. It will be

a resource people use for they or their families flu symptoms - swine

flu or not. Most countries have pharmacies that supply direct to the

public where these remedies can be quickly obtained.

Of course, Oscillo will still be helpful if you are young and it is

started early.

Yeah.. that is what I thought too about it. I can't believe that they say to

take the whole vial as one dose!! But at least it is good to get it out on
