Guest guest
Is it safe?, the tb test. My workplace made us have 2 because of some consultant they hired that had possibly been exposed before coming here temporarily. That's another factor of different things that occurred. I try to piece together what things changed since around the time, my WBC count started dropping from normal to now chronically low. >>> " thefitzenreiterfamily " <thefitzenreiterfamily@...> 12/4/2006 1:46:29 PM >>> Will he have direct patient contact? Guest guest
I actually worte a review paper on TB skin testing in healthcare workers several years ago. As a radiologist we were mandated to take the test. Just like the flu vacccine, my conclusion was that is was worthess and there has been no long term safety testing. It contains phenol which cuauses cancer in mice when injected intradermally and guess what route it is given in humans? yup, intradermal. Who gets TB? alcoholics, AIDS and immuncompromised. I have been reading chest xrays for 20 years and nearly every day I see a CXR with a history of TB positive skin test. I have YET to see an abnormal CXR. That means that the overwhelming majority of positive tests are false negative. Who who give prophylaxis to an asymptomatic low risk individual when the treatment has a 25% rate of termination becuase of side effects. Now if I practiced in a big city I probably could not say that. To test infants and children is absolutely absurd.see www.vaclib.org/basic/tbtest.htm david ayoub,md > > Ok.. here is a silly question.. my son needs to have a TB test...is this > safe? he has to volunteer at a hospital for school.. peace, Lia >
Guest guest
In my microbiology class the book and my instructor both state that 1/3 of the world has been or is currently infected with TB. That number seemed incredibly unreal to me, I even questioned her to make sure I was understanding it correctly. 2 billion is the number given who are currently infected or are still living and have had active infections. I know that many people in the African AIDS epidemic also have TB, but that sorta goes hand-in-hand with AIDS. Isn't it only 200,000 mil with AIDS? I know that's still a horrible no, but well below 2 bil, but of course, people with AIDS die. Still, people with TB are often with AIDS and have no health care, so it seems they would be dying as well as AIDS sufferers. Is this accurate? Debi, who's going into nursing and gonna have to have this test soon. 1 >

Guest guest
Lia, I have read that after so many TB test there is a possibility of getting a false positive. This is becasue the test injects a tiny amount of the bacteria every time you take it. If you get a positive reaction they then want you to begin a course of a very potent kind of antibiotic. My boyfriend was exposed to TB overseas while in the Navy. Every time he has blood work done they find this and wnt him to take this medicaiton. It has been 20+ years since the exposure. He of course refuses the the drug. They can also find this through a blood test becsue that is how they test my boyfriend. That may be something you can check out. I am a case manager for the elderly and my Agency tried to force us to get the test. Why I do not know because all we do is just fill out the paperwork in their homes. I lied and told them I tested in Junior Hight school. For some reason once you test positive you can't take another test. I nevr did follow up on why that is. Someone on the group may have the answer. Guest guest
I'm sure there are others more knowledgeable than I am, but when I was researching this a few things stood out to me. One, that the TB tests are an unreliable measure of TB--lots of false positives (?). A chest x-ray would confirm TB, but I believe you would have a cough with TB. Regardless, I won't allow them--don't want germs put into my children's skin. In Connecticut anyway, the doctors put down on the health form for school whether the child falls into certain categories of risk. I'm not sure what you are required to do if the doctor decides they are. If your child isn't in school or daycare, it shouldn't even be an issue. Just decline them (and get another doctor?). Guest guest
Our wonderful ped asked if we would be getting Jack a TB test at his 12 month appointment. I said, " I guess so. It's just a surface test right? " He corrected me and said, " No. You should look into it before you decide. He's not at risk, so it's not a big deal. " I'm paraphrasing, actually, but that's OK. The point is, unless your child is at risk for TB, the TB test just isn't worth it. I learned here that it is more than just a little prick. :0) ~Robyn yvomo_yvonne wrote: > > I know the TB test is not really a vaccine but I was hoping you guys > would know something about it. Guest guest
In California the law is that children do not need a TB test. Parents can file a philosophical exemption or a doctor can state there are no risk factors for TB. Parents who volunteer at school may be required to get a TB test, in which case they should get the Quantiferon Gold TB blood test available through Quest or other labs when ordered by a doctor. We live in Cal. and we had no problem with vacc. exempt(for school), but they're forcing us to have TB test, and apparently it's required by the county here(Santa Clara). I was told today that either the test or exclusion. I did sign a letter stating no vaccs and no TB test. They accepted the no vacc, but giving me hard time on TB test. Any advice? Thanks. I mean, yeah, in some countries or demographics, OK..(and thats me being nieve). Why randomly test a kid for TB? Isnt the main symptom a cough? Well, my daughter has a dry cough, but im quite certain its cause we have very dry air in our house. whats the point of mass tests? i know its a serious and highly contagious disease that needs to be cauht asap, but wjhats with the random testing? Guest guest
It's just scare tactics... make you get a test for a horrible disease and you will automatically think your child is going to die if you don't vax for that disease after the test comes up negative... $$$ for them and they think it's peace-of-mind for you. Sheri's (list owner) website has a lot of really good info on TB: http://www.nccn.net/~wwithin/TBtest & BCGvax.htm On Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 12:37 AM, jbobys <bobysandsuss@...> wrote: > What is the point of TB tests? Guest guest
After 8 months of not vaccinating my son I finally decided to do SOME not all of the vaccinations but only one at at time and a month in between some of them. He got his first TB test done 2 days ago at 15months, the reason I choosed to do this is because he is in daycare and his immune system isn't the best so it was the better way to go. I hope im making the right choice but my heart tells me it's the right thing to do. After a vaccine I stay home a few days to monitor his reactions and to make sure he doesn't get another seizure. But the MMR is definately going to be declined on our part. > > Completely ludicrous - I've never heard of testing babies for this. Guest guest
Curious, What made you decide to vax after 8 months? Why do you feel his immune system isn't the best? Am I understanding that the child already has had seizures, and if so what do you think caused them? It sounds like you believe that vaccines prevent disease. If you do who or what information led you to believe that. The truth is vaccines are not given to prevent disease. They are given to stimulate the body to make antibodies which is mistakenly believed to prevent disease. Normally its a good idea to follow your heart, but in this case i think the motivation and knowledge that led to your decision may have been faulty. The fact that you say you stay home a few days to watch the child tells me you may harbor a doubt or two. I would suggest investigating what thoughts tell you vaccinations are OK. I am 67, 40 million kids like me grew up without vaccinations except for smallpox. Fortunately we didn't get sick or die from the small pox pus(poison).
