Let me tell you, when I first started last year, I thought, " hoo boy.

Cottage cheese. Gross. " But then I read Bill mixed his with

ff and sugar free yogurt, I thought I'd try that. Now I can't eat

yogurt with out it! It's delicious.

P.S. I also HATED yogurt until a few years ago when I was at a

friend's and that is ALL she had to eat...I'm such a picky eater, I'm

like a 3-year-old!!

All beans are considered carbs on BFL. You shouldn't use them as your only

protein source in a meal. You might want to get a tub of whey protein. That way

you could have a protein shake with any meal where you have trouble coming up

with ideas.

Chicken, eggs, and beef will go a long way toward getting in all your protein.

You can hard boil eggs to make them portable (get rid of a few yolks to save

calories). You can buy little cans of chicken breast for putting on salads or

using in recipes. I would cook several chicken breasts and a batch of lean

ground beef ahead of time for use in your meals during the week. You can mix

them with bagged frozen vegetables, rice, beans, salads or whatever.

You can also use sliced deli chicken, beef, turkey, and lean ham. Deli meats

have a lot of sodium and nitrates though. You don't want to make them a main

meat source but they'll help round out your meals a few times a week.

No two brands of cottage cheese have the same taste or texture. The kinds you've

tried and hated may have been ick brands. I tossed out 4 different brands before

I found one I loved and could eat. Even if you never fall in love with cottage

cheese, you can dump it in the blender with a box of sugar free jello, blend it

and chill it. Then you have a smooth whipped cherry, orange, or lime dessert

instead of the dreaded white lumpy stuff.

Protein Question

All,

First, thank you to everyone who responds to these posts. I truly

have learned a great deal from everything I've read.

I will be starting my first challenge tomorrow, along with many of

you and I have some questions about proteins. I am not much of a meat

eater (chicken and some lean ground beef) and I like eggs, but I'm

struggling with other proteins. I DO NOT like cottage cheese and it

seems to be in every recipe I see and I do not eat seafood. So as you

can see, I'm struggling with finding a protein for every meal. I know

beans are a good source of protein, but I want to be sure I'm not

eating those high in carbs (ie. lentils) or high in fat.

Can anyone make any suggestions? I want to ensure I stick with this

and variety is going to help!!!

Thank you all,

Bill also recommends a tablespoon of sugar free jam mixed

in with cottage cheese, add an apple diced up, and yum yum a sweet

authorized treat!! This one got me through many 6th meals over the

last year!!

20-30 grams per meal, give or take.

I read somewhere that our bodies can't digest more than 25-30 grams

per meal anyhow.

My protien powder has 20 grams per serving.

I aim for about 20 grams protein if it is something I can't measure

(protein powder, eggs, etc.).

EAS has said that you should consume protein shakes and meal

replacements within 8 hours of mixing them. Designer says 2 hours.

Anything with creatine in it should be consumed immediately.

Heating protein powder does break it down a little. Most people don't

worry about the occasional baked protein muffin or cookie though. Some

proteins are more stable than others when heated. I'm thinking whey

was one of the more fickle varieties and soy and egg were more stable.

I could have dreamed that though. Here's the Q & A from Designer.

Q. What happens to the protein if I bake whey protein? Freeze it? Blend it?

Any extreme temperatures, freezing or high heat (above ~140ºF), can

denature protein (produce cross-linking) and reduce its solubility,

digestibility and bioavailability.

Blending a protein solution (heat and foaming) can result in the

denaturation of proteins, leading to a loss of solubility and

biological functionality. However, the small amount of heat or foaming

produced during preparation of a shake from a powder by blending in a

household blender will not cause any damage to the proteins.

Q. Why should I mix protein into a drink and consume it immediately?

Immediately does not mean instantly. However, drinking within 30

minutes of mixing is smart since pure protein in the liquid form is an

extremely fertile environment for airborne bacteria growth. Leaving a

protein drink (reconstituted from powder) in a refrigerator for two

hours is probably okay, but not overnight.

Thank you so much for the quick reply.

I have been trying to figure out ways to get more protein into my

diet. I can't really stomach the taste of protein powder with out it

being masked by something else like fruit. So, I was thinking about

blending shakes in advance to take to work with me because I am about

to start my 14 hour days (an auditors busy season sucks!) and

blenders aren't portable. I was also thinking about making protein

muffins because I have seen receipies for them but I wasn't sure if

they were worth the extra effort if the protein was going to loose a

lot of it's strength.

It looks like I can do both yay! Thanks again.

How exciting ! Which doctor will be doing your belt lipectomy? I like the

Detour bars. They are quite tasty! 15 gms of protein. I don't have time to

make the protein drinks so I keep to the bars. Much more convenient for me!

From what I understand about it, the protein will help with the healing

process so it shouldn't matter how you get the protein in. It is very

important to continue your supplements as well as protein as your body

takes a big " hit " when you have plastic surgery.

You should probably switch to a muscle gain or maintenance ratio. Once

you get up to around 2,000 calories a day, 40% protein becomes pretty

excessive. The standard recommendation for muscle gain is 15-17 times

body weight and 50% carbs, 30% protein, 20% fat. That would give you a

more reasonable 135-150g of protein per day.

entered my day into Fitday. I ate almost 1900 calories and my split was 40/40/20

me?Since I'm not trying to lose weight, should I eat more carbs or more

too much of it as fat. After trying for the past 10 years to lose weight, it's

hard to get out of that calorie cutting mindset.

Hi Pamela,

What is Undenaturated Whey Protein ?

I don't know if it'd be a problem or not. If the liver is pretty bad, protein

can cause some hard work for the liver and the body builds up toxins. However,

a lot depends on the state of the liver. I would advise discussing this with

your liver specialist first before your husband tries it.

Personally, I do the high protein, low carb diet (when I diet, which lately

isn't often LOL). I have CFS also (thanks to Interferon) and I take Provigil

when I need energy.

There shouldn't be any problem with him taking this unless there is iron in it.

People with liver disease can use good sources of easily digested protein (can't

everyone?) and whey is one of them.

Alley,

You say the interferon gave you CFS? Could you elaborate a little -

symptoms & diagnosis? It's been hard to pinpoint causes of fatigue (for me)

with so much going on such as age, HCV, high blood pressure, being

overweight, etc.

Any additional info would be much appreciated.

Well, knowing the Interferon gave me CFS (which could just as well mean I had it

but didn't know it before), is that I didn't feel that way before treatment and

during and after treatment I felt worse and it never really popped back to

normal, my energy level that is.

I also have fibromyalgia, which is just what my doc has lumped my achey symptoms

into since I don't test as having arthritis and such.

Now I've discovered I have some kind of degenerative bone disease, so that

doesn't help.

I asked my g p last time for more or better or different pain meds cuz the 50

vicoprofen a month she gives me doesn't always last. I know she has to worry

about addiction etc, but I have found I prefer not living in pain than living

like a dang hermit on the couch not doing anything. She didn't want to give me

more so I may end up going to a pain specialist. Some days I need nothing, some

days I do. I'm not sure she understands exactly how I feel, especially while

doing cancer chemo.

Dear Alley,

She probably doesn't understand. You might try adding Aleve to the vicoprofen,

but I'd ask for a script for vicadin. It is addictive, but it works fast,

better, and lasts longer..........for me at least. Ask for a referal to pain

management, but ask for one for physical therapy as well. The program they

worked out for me has made a WHALE of a difference in my pain level. I do have

to be dilligent about it, but it beats being in a agony or b non functional

(Idon't do pain meds very well).

What kind of degenerative bone disease. If that's all she said, you might just

have osteopenia, which is what I have. Considering that my Mother has lost over

6 inches in height in the last few years, I eat my calcium supplements and Tums

like candy. This also keeps me from having to take Prevacid, which keeps me

sitting on the commode for hours on end.

Hang in there, kid,

Tylenol doesn't do a darn thing for me, so I don't take meds with tylenol in

them. Also, I take them so much, I don't add NSAIDS to these meds to it if I

don't have to. Tho, what I've found works OK on most days is half a vicoprofen

and 2 aspirin. Aleve doesn't do much for me either and because it lasts so

long, then I'm not supposed to take anything in addition till it wears off.

Why couldn't they have just left me my Bextra! Now THAT worked!

On the bone disease, I forgot now what they called it but it wasn't osteo

anything. I think I remember it started with an a maybe. That original dx was so

long ago. I can look it up in my records and see. They found it originally back

in 200/01 when I did the bone scan after discovering the melanoma. I kept

telling my doc my back hurt but never really thought that much about it. Now I

know why!

I started some physical therapy back in Jan for my sciatica, but had to stop
