In my opinion, only YOU can be that person.

This is common. Lots of DANs want you on gfcf diet, and then

recommend [or even sell you] supplements that are not gfcf.

Yep, those DANs do it too.

Well, I handled this by recovering my son on my own, without a doctor.

If you want to use a doctor, find one that will listen to you, and

provided what you want makes sense, go along with the tests etc that

you want.

I sit here and spend my time considering/researching docs and I don't

think I'll EVER find a PERFECT fit...and I'm just now getting to the

point where I realize that I'm wasting time and I have to be the one

to organize the recovery and use them for their knowledge in their own

areas of expertise. I don't want to do DAN! protocol chelation. I

don't want to do the antifungal parade with my son. However, I do

feel that I need someone who is willing to order tests, prescribe

treatments at times, etc.

I'm just wondering how you have all handled this :)

===>Exactly like this. This is the beginning of recovery for most kids. Best

of both worlds is to do your own research and have a dan! who will order testing

if need be.

Another avenue to explore is docs who specialize in natural hormone

treatment. That's where we are now, and I'm finding people with very

fine tuned knowledge not just on adrenals/thyroid, but viral, GI as

well. I find some DANs have overly generalized knowledge and aren't

very good when it comes to very specific issues that our kids face.

oh, and i meant to say also that a lot of these practitioners don't

have an MD after their names and they're darn good.

Also my opinion that you can't rely on docs solely. It's too many

systemic problems of different origin for any one doctor. Each has

their own specialty of study, and usually it's not whole body

medicine. You may have one doc who handles the food intolerances and

gut health, another for the metals if your lucky, one for holistic or

homeopathic remedies, a chiropractor, an OT therapist, a SPL

therapist....etc etc. But there isn't really just one doctor to handle

all of this.

Or in our case..It's Me..I handle it all. I have seen doctors,

consulted with them, had tests run by them. But essentially, I manage

and coordinate what is going to work for us. After wasting some money

on doctors I realized that the money was better spent on tests, books

and supplements. I ordered both of Andy's books, I ordered the hair

testing needed. I began teaching myself what the supplement do, what

they help or don't help. I also read books on conditions that pertain

to my kids like sensory processing disorders, OT therapy and began

using those things in my home to help my son advance and catch up.

For example: Our ped is not helpful for anything related to his

toxicity. But they will do a physical for school, or give us nystatin

cream for yeast.

Our chiropractor deals helps with keeping his immune system up and

adjust him to correct a femoral anteversion problem.

We saw a developmental ped for advice and to help be sure he got the

therapy he needed at school.

We have a Speech language specialist monitoring his progress at

school. She did testing for us last year.

We still have the OT therapist twice a week but he's going to be done

with that in June.

We went to a hearing center for testing.

I have a holistic doctor for my daughter's issues.

I have seen a homeopathist, herbalist.

So basically, you see people for that particular problem. You can

order many tests yourself if needed.

If you are seeing inconsistencies with the DAN, then your instincts

are right...they should not be putting your kid on a special diet and

then giving your supplements that violate that diet. This means either

the doctor doesn't know anything about that diet, or the doctor has

profits from supplements over the interest of your child.

There might be a good doc somewhere. But for many of us..there isn't.

Thank you all so much for sharing your opinions. I had kind of

reached this conclusion last week. We really are doing a ton of this

already on our own. it just takes so much time to learn the ropes.

I'm about 18 months into biomed and I think I have gained a lot of

useful knowledge. Now I just have to have the confidence to apply it

all.

As for now, i think i'm on the right track. We did speech and OT

( graduated from each this year!). We consult with behavioral

therapists when needed. We see a chiropractor and craniosacral

therapist regularly. I have a GI specialist who just became willing

to work with him after I told him about the antifungal parade

suggested by the DAN! he referred us to. I might have to seek the

assistance of an endocrinologist, allergy specialist, and I'd love to

find a good homeopathic practitioner. and I personally have a degree

in dietetics...I can't imagine finding a practicing RD who could

maneuver their way around these diets.

So thank you all for your opinions...I'm sure I'll be firing tons of

questions your way over the years :)
