Why does homeopathy fail scientific tests?

Dear Friends,

After posting the links to the homeopathy sites I have received many mails

asking the question, " Why go in for an unscientific medicine? " . Many have been

more specific, " Why does homeopathy fail scientific tests? " .

I am not an expert to satisfactorily answer these questions but I will certainly

attempt to answer.

Homeopathy is vastly different from modern medicine. It can be tested only by

people who are well acquainted with the theory behind it and practice it

according to homeopathic principles. The disease-drug relationship cannot be

tested in homeopathy as this method (homeopathy) does not recognise named

disease states but rather has its own definition of disease states.

For example, in modern medicine, we can have a drug for say malaria. We can test

it on a group of malaria patients and compare the results with a placebo

controlled group. But in homeopathy we do not have any specific drug for

malaria. Each patient will be questioned for symptoms and the corresponding

remedy prescribed. Each and every patient may receive a different remedy though

the disease name, malaria, can be same for all of them.

If the tests have a time frame, then the homeopaths may be at a disadvantage.

After giving the required remedy the symptoms may not go away immediately. They

may loose their acuteness but linger. There may be the need for subsequent

prescriptions as the " disease layer " that will be preventing the cure may

present itself.

What is this " disease layer " ? This is the underlying chronic state that might be

hindering the cure. Unless this underlying state is tackled, the patient will

not be free of symptoms.

Thus cure in homeopathy would depend upon various factors;

1. The level of competence of the physician

2. The ability of the patient to communicate, and,

3. The past history of the patient

Why go through all this, one may ask. My answer is, tackling disease is beyond

the administration of medicine. In my article, " The Dynamics of Disease "

(available on the internet), I have stated how the disease dynamics has to be

understood and addressed. Unless one is able to do this, and thus act in tandem

with the body's own curative forces, the disease force simply undergoes a

process called " metastasis " , i.e. it changes face. Just as a virus may mutate

after a period of time.

In case of malaria, we see patients developing what homeopaths call the malarial

dyscrasia. The patients become anemic, loose appetite, have problems with the

liver and pancreas and the malarial fever recurs at intervals. With proper

homeopathic treatment the patient will never face such problems.

Another problem with " scientific tests " of homeopathy is that they are rarely

done keeping in view scientific principles. The objective is often to " prove

homeopathy wrong " , rather than test its effectiveness. I remember fighting such

a study which " selected " sample data that would prove homeopathy ineffective.

I am not at all apologetic about homeopathy or other systems of medicine. It is

up to the physician and the patient to judge the effectiveness.
