Vaxing for Meales directly following exposure

Thinking about last night's Private Practice episode.. The child was

exposed to the virus - and they vaccinated him so he would not get the

measles. Does anyone here know enough about how they work to explain why

they would do such a thing? In other words, if you were already exposed,

what is the vaccine going to do to help you at that point? If this child

did contract this virus, wouldn't the vaccine have made him worse?
