Hi!

My son [ASD w/3yrs/ 37 lbs./ & cute!!] is on Spectrum Complete Powder

- Hypoallergenic [which has 10mg of Zinc] and I want to introduce more

Zinc for his metal chewing issues......how much more Zinc will he

need? Can I give him the needing doses at one time, am maybe? I'm in

panic to give wrong doses.

Thanks for answering my questions, I don't feel along anymore!

Andy's recommendation is to start at weight + 20 mg. So that would be @

57 mgs for your son. My son is about 35 lbs, and I have to give @ 65

mgs/day or he starts chewing on things. I give it through out the day

and both with meals and away from meals. It is in his multi vitamin

and multi-mineral which I give with meals and I also give extra before

bed and in the early am. Usually the citrate and picolinate forms are

the most easily absorbed. We did work up to this level, so I would

start where you are and slowly add extra maybe raising the amount each

week until he stops chewing.

As an FYI, I've been giving the 65 mgs for about 6 months (and before

that I was giving @ 45 mgs for a year), and we recently did blood work

to test both RBC Zinc and Plasma Zinc. RBC Zinc was exactly in the

middle of the reference range and Plasma Zinc was slightly high. I

still need to talk to the Dr. about the test results, but those results

tell me that the high doses are what my son needs.
