Guest guest
I was not aware this was a " public " group, nor that the details about my daughter and family would be available to every old lover or acquaintance who just got curious as to what I was up to. I'm changing my aliases now, but it won't undo what is already available. Out of the nearly 40 groups I belong to, this is the only one which makes the archives publicly available, and I wish I had been more aware of this before posting. Guest guest
And now I'm finding that, though I can delete my own posts, replies to my posts (with my info in them, see below) can only be deleted by the poster, or the moderator. I do not want any personal info publicly accessible, where it concerns my daughter, period. Mods can you help me delete all these old messages? thank you. > > I was not aware this was a " public " group, nor that the details about > my daughter and family would be available to every old lover or > acquaintance who just got curious as to what I was up to. > > I'm changing my aliases now, but it won't undo what is already available. > > Out of the nearly 40 groups I belong to, this is the only one which > makes the archives publicly available, and I wish I had been more > aware of this before posting. > > Liora >

It isn't like this is kept secret. Also I would not be surprised if all 39 other groups were close enough to public it doesn't matter. It constantly amazes me what people post on public, archived listservers that is clearly individually identifiable. BTW, you CAN actually delete your own posts (though not others' responses to them) if it is crucially important. > Liora >

Guest guest
Andy pointed out that only the messages you sent can be deleted. What this means is that anyone who replied to your message most likely quoted your original message in their text. This will not be deleted, so in essence your information will remain in the archives. I also believe Onibasu archives are operated independently from the list, and so you will have to contact the administrators there as well. There are other archives (educational institutions) which mirror the lists. >Same here. Guest guest
> > How long do these messages stick around on all these different sites? > Do they eventually disappear? after severeal years? A while back, deleted many of the first/older messages from this site and a few others, mostly sites that are high volume. But, many people raised a major uproar, so stopped doing that. Messages on this site go back many years, even despite the deleting of the oldest messages. Dana

They deleted the messages because they had set something up somewhere with some sort of maximum number of messages that they could imagine any group ever having -- and we exceeded it. It was not malicious on their part, and they didn't even intend to delete " real " messages. Their settings assumed that either our volume of messages or our size of archive must mean that the content was spam. They were perfectly willing to change the settings once it was pointed out that they were deleting our content. Anyway, the point is the same: at the moment doesn't delete messages regardless of age. If you are really concerned, you may not want to know that there are also backup copies of the internet such that even DELETED content MAY be stored and " findable " forever or darned close to it. If you do want to know. search for " way back " or " wayback " . Moria
