I was not able to chat with any GIs today but was talking to a general surgeon who does a lot of diagnostic scopes and colectomies for cancer and Crohns.

His first reaction was that there was no correlation with diet and the CAUSE of IBS or Crohns. But as far as exacerbation of the problem, he was admittedly not an expert, but had his patients follow no special diet - just a common sense balanced diet limiting all fried foods.

We got into an interesting conversation about LDN - he never heard of it but has heard of Narcan (naltrexone) to reverse drug overdoses and of course its use in surgery. This guy was very positive about boosting endorphin production as to possibly having effect on immune disorders and we had a nice chat.

I did not have time to get to the library today (budget crunch time) but plan to get more research in asap.

Just off topic, I have been taking LDN prophylactically for experimental reasons and find I actually sleep less and am more alert in general. Get up more refreshed. Better frame of mind in general. Definitely can tell the difference when I forget to dose at night. This surgeon then offered to write an Rx for me for LDN without question (I got my LDN from an Rx of an MS pal of mine who switched to liquid - works better for her...). Too bad more doctors are not open to this!

I hope someone puts out a summary abstract of the 4th LDN conference - I really need this to chat with the medical establishment. In addition, it would be nice to have a better list of the current and past research projects and the status. I never really heard what the Oak Clinic results were, and it is 15 minutes away from me! I will be calling them but I thought this data was to be presented.

The main site was seemingly down today so I was not able to get on this afternoon to see any updates.

Also, there was a packet of info for doctors out there somewhere and i can't seem to locate this again - anyone have ther link?

Thanks

Bob C

Thanks a lot for doing all this work for the group, it's just great!

My two cents worth; as far as LDN is upregulating the immune system and a healthy immune system may protect us from getting cancer and other serious diseases, - I can't find any reasons to not take LDN.

I am looking forward to read what the GI's opinions will be. I am quite convinced that changing diet is the way to go. Of course with LDN.

Well, don't get your hopes up for a good diet. Here is today's report.

I had my diabetic educator look into this and she talked with some of the dietitians. They rarely get a consult for Crohns. Only when there are underlying problems such as diverticuitis, strictures or gluten issues. Then they typicaly try to limit fresh fruit and veggies, and salads and seeds. Hard to pass through strictures and lead to obstructions.I talked to a GI doc who is the top guy in town and a very honest and classy guy "doctor to the doctors". He essentially said the same thing and said he found no correlation between diet and flareups or progression of the disease. He did recommend limiting the raw veggies and caution about fruits. He also mentioned strictures as being a real culprit. Fried foods could be eaten in moderation as in any diet.

I then caught a bunch of GI nurses at lunch and posed the questions. They hear this stuff from a LOT of different doctors and I expected to hear some options, but alas, NYET. Same issues, same answers. They also mentioned strictures, and these can be caused by the disease itself or post-surgical bowel resections. One has a brother with crohns, and she concurred from personal experience.

I also caught the chief of surgery and he described that colon resection was really a last resort after remicaide and steroids and avoided it because of the high incidence of obstruction later in life. He had no opinion on diet except for what we already know with the addition of popcorn and small seeds that can get caught in diverticulii.

On an interesting note, another GI was going on yesterday about how we are essentially vegetarians and have evolved from carnivores, and how we need to change our eating habits in general. This after wolfing down a HUGE rare filet at a meeting with me last week, fried gourmet onion rings, and a bunch of appetizers including sashimi (raw tuna). Yikes.

I guess I still have to get the literature search going, but so far I am not encouraged that diet has a lot to do with the disease. BTW, all these people mentioned STRESS as a culprit to exacerbations!

more later
