,

While you are on the subject of books: Awhile back you recommended

a book for someone and I put your post in a file so that I could go back

to it. Needless to say, I can't find it. It was not OCD in children &

Adolenscents by J. March, but it dealt with bossing back OCD. Could

you help me out here?

Thanks and take Care!

Dr. Steketee's come from New Harbinger - I think they are in the Bay Area,

Kathy; mybe the boys can stop buy and bring them back with them.

Dr. Swinson at McMaster is another Canadian that has published about

OCD. Some are with New Harbinger, but I think some are with ?Psychological

Associates? from Texas [they use the Greek 'Psi' as a logo].

Hi Jim:

Thanks for the tip on the new Steketee manuals. I will be in the Bay area

on Friday so if I don't get them on line then I can check it out there. I

think Dr. Swinson was one of the co-authors on the book I mentioned by

Rachman earlier.

Also for Canadian content there is the manual recommended by Dr. Claiborn

written by a prof at Universite Laval in Quebec. This one is on purely

obsessional OCD and I bought it as a gift for my son's therapist. Due to

an appallingly bad memory I can't remember the author's name - if anyone

wants to know I can check when I get home on Sunday.

Happy bibliotherapy, take care, aloha, Kathy (Ha)

Hi Terry and Welcome

THe manual is about 160 pages long and is should be used primarily as a part

of a CBT program with a professional [according to Jim]. I have not

purchased it yet. Perhaps Roman who is on this List and whose

daughter sees Jim Hatton; may have it and be able to comment on i better.

from Canada mentioned she has it and has read it, in an earlier post

today [available at www.onelist.com in the archives for this group].

Hi Terry and Jim:

Welcome to the list. We also have a child whose OCD was dxed at 10

although now he tells us that he thinks it started when he was 7 nearly 8.

There are a number of resources targeted to kids with OCD we have found

helpful for educating ourselves and Steve's teachers:

1. Dr monograph on OCD and the schools, sorry I am away from home and

don't remember the exact title, something like OCD and School Personnel:

The critical link. You can look for it on the OCF website

2. Dr. Dornbusch's book " Teaching the Tiger " . While it is written more

for ADHD and TD than OCD, many of the ideas for school accommodations are

applicable to OCD and I believe all teachers coping with kids with NBDs

should have a personal copy of this book.

3. Dr. March and Mulle's book, " Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in

Children and Adolescentss " . This book and it predecessor treatment

manaual, " How I Ran OCD Off My Land " are quite possibly the most important

resources for parents of children with OCD. The book is written for

professionals but is very readable for parents.

4. The OCF Foundation has produced videos for educating schools about kids

with OCD. These are packaged with Dr. booklet, and two booklets from

the OCD Information Center in Wisconsin about OCD in Children and

medications. When I lent my video set to Steve's school the feedback I got

was that the material was way over their heads, this did leave me a bit

stumped. It is inspiring to watch the panel of kids on one of these videos

talk about their OCD.

5. Connie has written books about kids with OCD (check out OCF

website) and there is also a neat booklet " The Secret Problem " published by

Shrinkrap Press which can educate other kids about OCD kids.

In addition to learning about OCD, for us it has been important to learn

about behavior problems. There are a number of books that have been

helpful in explaining how to cope with the difficult behaviors that some of

our beloved OCDers have.

Another book that is addressed directly to OCD family members is Dr.

Herbert Gravitz's book, " Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: New Help for the

Family " . Dr. Tamar Chansky is writing a book on OCD and kids and I am

looking forward to reading it when it is pubished.

I have found Dr. Hatton's manual to be very informative and an easy read.

It is not specifically aimed at children as is the protocol outlined in Dr.

March's book. I do like the way Dr. Hatton's manual addressed coping with

the problems that come up during CBT.

Happy reading, take care, aloha, Kathy (Ha)

I have run across the following books. I ordered both from Amazon.com

" Testosterone Deficiency in Men " T. Hugh Oxford University

Press 2008 This seems to be a very new book written by an English

author. More aimed at doctors

" Testosterone for Life " Abraham Morgentaler, M.D. McGrawHill 2009

written by a Harvard Med. School Prof. Aimed at ordinary people like us.

Thanks for these! Note too you can search them for key words and read

a few pages of the text on Amazon!

In looking at these I found a new one called " Androgen Deficiency in

Males. "

If you search amazon for androgen deficiency you get a hole bunch of

good books I've not seen before!
