I tried your way of going to as 27g x1/2 and it works, just takes a little longer. The nurse was the one who choose those two sizes to shoot. I see no need to use both sizes now either. I find it hurts less and the muscle on my thy doesn't get as sore either which is a big plus. I don't know why they suggested a 1 inch needle in the first place. She said it because if you broke one you could pull out the needle. Well after sticking a 1/2 need in all the way I see no problem with breaking it off in your leg. Works fine.
