Alkalinity -- important or not?

Most alternative cancer sites rant and rave about system alkalinity.

Personally, the subject is confusing to me.

I've read posts by MD's and the like claiming that alkalinity is BS --

that the body MUST maintain alkalinity within an extremely narrow

range and that it has elaborate mechanisms for doing so, and it

really doesn't matter what we eat -- our bodies' PH will stay within

that very narrow range.

I've read information that say cancer is killed quickly by

alkalinity, and others that say cancer is not really affected that

much by alkalinity.

I've also read advice from the same general pool of MDs dismissing

alkalinity, supporting some alkalinity claims, e.g., that it is

easier to quit smoking if you make your body alkaline by taking some

baking soda. (Nicotine craving goes up in an acidic environment).

And, of course, there is the issue of sodas, that make the body very

acidic (??? or do they???) hence stripping alkaline minerals from the

system, especially calcium. Or is this just the phosporic acid, and

not general system acidity, that is the culprit?

In some ways, the acid / alkaline debate may be a diversion, because

it just so happens that the best cancer diets happen to be alkaline,

but this may be a side issue to the main issue that the diets have

lots of fruits and veggies and no meat and no sugar. Or maybe it

isn't.

I'm going to eat alkaline regardless, but if alkalinity is a major

issue, I could force my system further alkaline with barley powder

pills, and in extreme cases, with cesium chloride. But cesium

chloride is sort of scary to me because it can screw up the heart

rhythms. But I don't know if it is an issue.
