Colonoscopy

My aunt had her first colonoscopy at age 50, just a regular checkup no special

worries! She was found to have early stage colon cancer, and subsequently had

surgery and chemo. She is now doing perfectly well and it's been several years.

Her cancer was so early that she did not have any symptoms, she was told that if

she had waited until she had symptoms she would have cut her chances way down,

especially since the symptoms are not always immediately associated with colon

cancer in a woman. She is a healthy woman and had no risk factors.

I had laser surgery on my cervix 15 years ago for precancerous cells. It was

caught during a routine pap smear. I have not had any more " bad " pap-smears and

have since had 5 more kids and I am happy I get to watch them grow up.

My mom died at the age of 56 from complications of breast-cancer, she died a

horribly painful and lingering death, slowly being paralysed and eaten up by

cancer. If she had had routine mammograms chances are she would have had

treatments a lot earlier, she had a deep lump that was not detecable by

palpitation only via mammogram.

You can bet your bottom dollar I have routine mammograms and pap-smears!

Enough said!!!!!

Are you shitting me? Do you know how dangerous a colonoscopy can be? They

" inflate " your intestines with air so they can see damage. If they punch a

hole in your colon moving the probe around, your body cavity fills up with air.

Sounds like someone is drumming up business.

No way.

Eat a healthy diet, don't wait for a dangerous procedure (not to

mention uncomfortable in the extreme) to tell you to do it or that it is

too late to do it:-)))

I had a colonoscopy in the Fall and could not get all the prep down. I was

throwing up non stop and just couldn't get it down. When I had the test, I

wasn't totally cleaned out, and by the way the sedation didn't work either, it

was very painful and uncomfortable. They did remove a pre cancerous polyp.

He was able to accomplish the test, but next time I will try and find another

way to get all the stuff down and be totally cleaned out. I will dread it

though. I would rather have 10 mgb's than one colonoscopy and I'm not

exagerating. Barb Dudley, High Point, Oct 15, 2003, 242/140.

When I had my Colonoscopy They infiltrated the IV needle and I didn't get

one bit of the pain medication. It was a very uncomfortable procedure and

painful also. I did watch it on the screen and was pleased to see a very clean

colon and intestinal tract. He said I didn't need another one for 10 years

and I will hold him to that. Not anxious to go thru that again. lol.

I just had a colonoscopy in December and it was no problem at all. I must

have had a different prep than what others have had. I had to drink nothing

but clear liquids the day b/4, drink a saline laxative the night b/4 as well

as the day of. They put me under and I don't remember a thing until I woke up

after the procedure. I had no complications or problems at all.

Well here I go again.Hope it is ok?

Dr. P said to ask him what to take for colonscopy. Since he was a colon/ rectal

docotr before he can tell you what and how to take that nasty stuff.

I know there are other alternatives to drinking that gallon of stuff cause I

can't. They gave me something else. Also I didn't start at 4 pm like they said.

I started at noon and was completely cleaned out by 4 pm.ThSen just had clear

liquids . So didn't have the night runs. My gastro doctor gave me the stuff when

I told him I hated salt water and would throw up.

So call Dr. P. and see what he says if you don't think you can do the gallon.

Good luck too. The meds they give are ususally Versed. It knocks you out and

they can bring you to in a second. You never know what happened( at least that

is what my gastro dr. usese.

My first colonoscopy, the doctor told me they would give me meds that would make

me forget the procedure. He was very surprised when I came out of recovery

(where I was moved to come out of the meds) and I told him everything he and the

nurses had said and what had happened. The second time I was put out. The

Yes Carol, a Colonoscopy isrecommended after age 50 unless your family has a

history of colon cancer. Then you need to start younger.

I have to have a colonoscopy. My doctor told me that

I have to drink a certain liquid the day before to

clean out the colon... I am on a mostly vegetable

diet, (the problems I have are from years before I

totally changed my lifestyle).

I was wondering if anybody could suggest a colon

cleanse. I could do a colonic/retention enema, which

I have to do myself, since there is no one in our area

to do that for me. I used to travel to have colonics

done, but can manage pretty well myself now. However,

I would prefer a colon cleanse without the colonic.

Any suggestions? I would appreciate it very much,

Ingrid,

I have had colonoscopies for the past 20 years. The prescribed cleanser,

Go-lytley, is a liter of laxative. You can add Crystal Light to enhance the

flavor. As a vegetarian, you should have a clear colon before a meat eater. I

have also used Dulcolax, a laxative pill, and a Fleet enema. All these items

work to cleanse the colon. Doctors have sometimes taken x-rays to ensure my

colon is empty before the procedure.

I am also going to have a colonoscopy. Besides the 24 hour prep that they

give me - I plan to juice for a week before the test. Won't this make

things easier, better for the test?

Hi Ingrid,

I am afraid I cannot tell you of a colon cleanse that can help for this

situation. You are going in (from my understanding of the many colonoscopies I

have had) for the doctor to look at your colon for a short period of time. All

that doctor wants is the fecal matter out of your colon so he can see it. Most

'colon cleansers' I know of and have done take a while to cleanse off any fecal

'plaque' (a few weeks up to a month). Unless you have the time to do a complete

colon cleanse, all you really need is that drink the night before to 'empty'

you out.

You might want to ask to be kept awake so you can watch and see if there is

anything on your colon. I have had colon problems for years and each

colonoscopy, I was pink all the way through with hemorrhoids being the one thing

they found. Also, you can ask for a copy of the video or cd of the colonoscopy

if available.

If you do have the time for a full colon cleanse, Arise and Shine is the one I

can recommend from experience. It takes a few weeks, and then if you have

compacted fecal matter, it should come out of you quite well.

A few warnings, the Arise and Shine drink I had didn't taste good but it did the

job, and I felt better afterwards. Also, I just checked the website (they

didn't have one back when I was doing it) and the prices are outrageous to me

now. However, I did see a 7-day cleanse you might be interested in and there is

an 800 number to call for information. In my experience, from using the

products and the two books I have written by him, the products can get the

'plaque' out of your colon, if that is a concern to you. There is a download

for the cleansing, that talks about the plaque and it should tell you how the

products 'clean you out'. Please check the website if you choose this and it

is all there.

Download for cleanse explaining plaque removal:

I hope this helps some.

Here is a link for the product I am referring to:

==>Hi . The question is " would getting a colonoscopy help you

your question, sedatives are toxic, but your body should be able to

One of the drugs they use for colonoscopies, Versaid (sp?) is one of the

weirdest things I've ever experienced. It does weird things with your

memory. It is not just a sedative. I don't want to ever have to be given

it again.

In my " hippie days " in college I took a lot of different drugs, including

LSD, and NONE of them scared me as much as this Versaid did. None of them

affected my memory to that extent, if at all.

Thankd Bee, I sincerely understand this philosophy but i have recently

had an MRI and CT show up some concerns, and although I would still

like to avoid the colonoscopy, it is difficult when you father is a

doctor i can assure you... it is such a popular method of diagsnosis

working every angle to try and get out of it, especially since getting

such great results on your program, i am feeling better every day now!

,

I had my first colonoscopy about 10 years ago and like you, couldn't drink the

gallon jug of Colyte. I also had to cancel and reschedule. Before the next

one, I think I ate light or drank liquids a day or two before the procedure,

then I may have taken some laxative pills they gave me and drank an 8 oz. bottle

of something in a green bottle (phosphosoda laxative?) and had an enema the

morning of the procedure. There ARE other methods of getting cleaned out. Ask

your doctor about alternatives.

Good luck,

Beth

Bee - I have a strange question. I was originally scheduled for a colonoscopy

a few weeks ago, but I couldn't drink the gallon of vile liquid they gave me the

first time around, so we had to cancel the appt. I'm scheduled to give it

another try next month, and I know I still won't be able to drink that stuff. Is

there a natural way I can " clean " myself out instead? I was thinking maybe the

coffee enema, but if I ask my gastro he'll just say to stick with the protocol.

Which won't work anyway, because I can't keep that stuff down. I was considering

just not doing the colonoscopy at all, but I haven't had one in 8 years and

since I have Crohn's, I'm supposed to get them more often.

>

==>, there is a lot of misinformation " out there " about fecal

matter getting stuck in the bowels, clogging them up, and requiring

cleansing or a " clean out. " However, only in very rare cases does

fecal matter get stuck which Sally Fallon points out in her

article " The Long Hallow Tube - A Digestion Primer " - see the article

in our " C) Digestion Folder " . My articles lists things to do to

improve digestion.

You could decide to hold off on the colonoscopy and concentrate on this

program which will improve your digestion, unless your symptoms are so

severe. The lining of the intestines regenerates every 4 days so

treating your bowels right means they will respond fairly quickly.

This program, which is high in " good " fats is the best cleanser for the

entire body; it even chelates out heavy metals. Coffee enemas are to

help decongest the liver and the adrenals of toxins.

I was doing a search on the archives to find out how others have done

with the colonoscopies in their lives - post/mgb ... I noticed only

one person say she took a copy of the 'drawing' of our new small

intestine hook up for review by the doc before her surgery. So I

guess I'm wondering if others did the same or do you all just tell the

doctor you had gastric bypass surgery, (or not)?

Which brings me to wording the question another way as well if that is

Ok... did any of you that had this procedure not tell the doc. doing

it that you even have the mgb? I believe they only scope out the

large intestine so I am thinking it does not matter, but then it also

seems like the more information they have about one the better. My

guess is that some just don't mention it so I'm wondering how that

worked for you?

Thanks again for any input ~ tis greatly appreciated!
