Should They Move?

Q: Recently an allergist told me and my family that we should move out of

our apartment because it's causing my daughters' respiratory infections and

my asthma. We have lived in this building for 5 years, and during that time

rainwater has frequently seeped into the walls. We think there may be mold

and mildew throughout the building. We have bought a dehumidifier, which

seems to help. Should we move?

A: If you can show (with skin or blood testing) that your daughter is

allergic to mold or dust mite (which likes the same moist growing conditions

that molds do), then I think you should move unless the leaks can be

repaired and the existing mold problem eliminated. Dehumidifiers are

inefficient devices and will not get rid of mold or dust mite and obviously

cannot fix the leaks.
