,

What meds is Brook on at the moment? Her side effects sound so much like

's. The Doctor is talking about Cyclasporin (spelling?) but one of it's

big side effects is even more hair growth. I can't stand it. 's hair

(on her head) started coming out too when she was just in hospital for three

weeks. Every day it seemed like needed to clean the hair brush out. It

seems to have stopped now that her liver is on the repair. Her legs are

really hairy and her eye brows are looking darker and bushy. I can also see

the hairs on her face more.

At what point into her medications did start to develop a 'moon face'

and extra hair? Her doses don't seem high. At least not compared to .

Does the hair just keep getting worse? I am hoping it will go away or at

least stop when we get to the kind of dose you are talking of. At least I

hope we get there. Was Brook on bigger doses to start with for a time? What

is her ESR (sed) rate these days?

Hi ,

We've never tried Celebrex. I've heard people (adults) say that it helped

them and they were able to tolerate it well. I haven't measured Josh's

tummy but right now it is VERY large! I just bought him some new surf shorts

for swimming, size 26 waist, and he likes to wear them low on his chubby

hips.We can pinch more than an inch in that area :-) & nbsp; Maybe later

he'll let me measure his waist? If so, I'll let you know.

Hi ,

Wow! That's really quick, to wean down on the prednisone so fast! Our

doctors are more conservative and usually go down much slower, depending

on the labs and how Josh is feeling. Especially when you get down as low

as 8mgs. Instead of judging by mg level, it's usually judged as a percentage

of the mg. So she's gone down over 50% in just 16 weks. We taper by 5 mgs

only when he's higher than 20. each month or every 6 weeks, depending.

Sometimes slower, if he has too much breakthrough pain. That's why we got

stuck at 15mgs for several months last time and yet even on that amount,

when he got sick it led to a flare. So, we had to double it up, back to

30, just to get the same response he was having on 15 before getting sick.

We never had the dosing split in two. I've heard that normally, the

body secretes cortisol in the AM, between 5am and 8am I think, so that's

usually the best time to take prednisone. I wonder what made your doctor

decide to split the dose? Just cause it made the dose stronger/more effective?

That's interesting. Pretty uncommon though, I think.

Now that is taking such a small amount of prednisone, maybe the

doctor should consider weaning even more slowly. It's a big adjustment

to make and it takes a while for the adrenal glands to restart. 8 mgs a

day is less than what the body normally produces on it's own. You don't

want her experiencing too much pain and maybe it causing a flare and then

needing to have to put the dose way up high again. Maybe if she stabilizes

at a dose, and is able to manage at that level with absolutely no pain

for a few weeks, then it might be time to taper again. I wouldn't rush

it. We've done that before and it only made things worse again. Instead,

I'd talk to the doctor about maybe giving it all just in one daily dose.

In the AM. That might be enough of a change to let her get through the

whole day pain free. I think you mentioned it recently, but what were 's

labs like the last time she had them done? What was her SED rate and WBC?

Take care,
Georgina

Hi,

I asked a time ago and Celebrex is not a drug approved for use in kids. Has

this changed?

 • 5 years later...

PAINKILLER LINKED TO 140,000 HEART ATTACKS IN PATIENTS A BLOCKBUSTER drug

launched five years ago as a revolutionary treatment for arthritis may have

caused up to 140,000 heart attacks in US patients of whom 44 per cent died,

scientists said yesterday, making it the world's worst drug disaster.

Vioxx, a new type of painkiller launched in 1999, was one of the most

heavily promoted drugs in history, with sales in 80 countries and a global

market of 80 million patients.

More than 400,000 patients were taking it in Britain, where it could have

caused up to 1,000 heart attacks and deaths.

Last September, the manufacturer Merck & Co withdrew the drug from the

market after evidence emerged linking it with heart problems.

Now, a study of 1.4 million people in California shows that those taking

Vioxx had a one- third higher chance of having a heart attack than those

taking other painkillers.

Graham, of the US Food and Drug Administration, and colleagues

concluded: " An estimated 88,000 to 140,000 excess cases of serious coronary

heart disease probably occurred in the USA over the market life of rofecoxib

[Vioxx]. The US national estimate of the case fatality rate was 44 per cent,

which suggests that many of the excess cases attributable to rofecoxib use

were fatal. " The results, published online by The Lancet, will be seized on

by critics of the pharmaceutical industry as evidence of the failure of the

drug regulatory system to protect the public. Dr Graham had earlier

estimated that Vioxx may have caused up to 27,000 heart attacks but the new

study caused him to upgrade the estimate by five times.

Doctors on both sides of the Atlantic have warned of a public health

emergency over other painkillers in the same class, known as -2

inhibitors, which could also pose a risk.

A report in The New England Journal of Medicine last October said studies

since 1999 had repeatedly indicated a danger with Vioxx. Drug regulators

made Merck include a warning in the drug package but never ordered a

definitive trial.

Professor Webb, of the clinical pharmacology unit at the University of

Edinburgh, says in The Lancet: " It falls to the manufacturers, under the

careful review of the regulatory authorities, to provide evidence that this

class of drugs is safe. "

The European Drug Safety Agency is conducting an urgent safety review of all

the -2 inhibitors, which have a combined global sale of $10bn (pounds

6bn). Last month, the UK Medicines and Health Care Products Regulatory

Agency advised all patients still taking Vioxx, estimated at 750,000, to

review their treatment with their doctor.
