You can get Nioxin at beauty salons or stores that specialize in

products used in beauty salons. I think it is called Nioxin Scalp

Therapy. Ther eis also a Nioxin shampoo, but I never found it much

use. -- Jan O', Alaska

I've had severe scalp psorisis for about three years.

My whole scalp to within a 1/2 inch of the hair line

is involved.

Nothing seems to help.

I didn't know Dovonex came in a cream.

I've tried the ointment but it gets more in my hair

than on my scalp.

To keep the itching at bay, I apply oil or lotion at

night and cover with one of those disposable bowl

covers.

In the morning I descale with a comb.

The scales are very soft and remove very easily.

(I get a new layer of skin every one to two days)

A lot of hair comes out too.

I then bathe in warm water with salt, soda and sesame

oil.

I wash my hair with t-sal, then T-gel, then a

conditioning and volumizing shampoo.

I rinse in the tub with the oil.

I apply a cortizone liquid (I'm not sure how much this

is helping yet - no other liquids worked)

When I drain the tub, there is a handful of hair in

the bottom.

I am taking MTX injections of 10mg and I think that is

doing the hair loss thing.

I keep my hair short and would like to shave it to 1/4

inch like I did 4 years ago berore the P.

I style my hair with Aloe Vera gel. It conditions and

works better than most mousses.

It is also non irritating.

All this on a daily bases only keeps my scalp from

driving me crazy with itching. It never gets better.

I use Loreal Exellence which is fairly easy to cover

the grey and give life back to the damaged hair.

I let the leasons cover over with a thick pach before

coloring and have no problems.

Moderator's note: Jeani, Dovonex is also supplied as a clear liquid " Scalp

Solution " that isn't greasy, and evaporates quickly. It comes in a 60 mL bottle,

but you have to ream out the dispensing hole with an ice pick or something to

get enough out to do any good. It helps, but the only thing that's ever worked

for me is to shampoo every day and scrub my scalp with a Shampoo Massage Brush

like the one shown at:

Becky:

I use a conditioner after medicinal shampoos and leave it on for about 5

minutes. I also spot the P in hair and beard with a Valisone prescription

when it is irsome during the day, which seems to help.

My cousin had the same scalp you are talking about. She quit her job as a

bank auditor to stay home and it all disappeared except for a small patch on

her elbow. Are you lucky enough to be independantly wealthy? It sure

worked for her!

Hi Jeani,

I have read somewhere that psoriasis contributes to hair loss. So for

those of us taking MTX and who have scalp P, we have a double wammy.

I think keeping the hair short helps and using moisturizing shampoos

and conditioners made with a lot of natural ingredients help alot. I

also found that those shampoos and conditioners with a lot of

manufactured chemicals made my scalp burn. That might just be me.

Yes, definitely make a request for the Dovonex Cream. There's also a

Dovonex solution, but I found the alcohol in the liquid made my scalp

worse. However, it might work for you.

I had pretty bad scalp psoriasis for a long time (90%) coverage. With this

also came a lot of lost hair. There are a couple of things that have helped

for me. The first is Derma Smooth. It's a prescription that is quite messy

but works well if you stick with it. You put it on at night and sleep with a

shower cap. You wash it out the following morning. I used Pentrax shampoo (an

over the counter tar shampoo). I did this for 2 weeks and was almost

completely cleared. Yes, you tend to lose more hair with it. But the good

news is that the loss is usually temporary. The other thing that has helped

is being on MTX. Yes, it does also contribute to hair loss. When I mentioned

this to my doctor she increased my folic acid to 2 a day (except for

injection day) and it stopped the hair loss. Good luck to you.

Someone with only P, not PA recommended a product called " Skin Cap " to me for

the P. You can only buy it online. It's about $50 a bottle so I haven't

tried it! Has anyone ever heard of/used it?

Here's a good review of many lotions, potions, grease, goop that you might

Dear Orin,

Don't even consider skin cap... it was taken off the market immediately after

deaths were reported from it containing too many steroids... it was from Spain

and sent through an American shipping company to residents in the U.S.... don't

even consider it! I had four bottles and threw 3 of them away... although they

were expensive... of course it works, it is loaded with all sorts of steroids

and other mysterious 'unmentioned' ingredients... stay away from it! There is a

newer product called 'Blue Cap'... it is also 'suspiciously' from Spain and the

packaging looks almost identical... I would be very careful with this as well.

I am at the moment going to the Dead Sea Medical Center in Jordan... they have a

solution that clears up the scalp psoriasis miraculously.... wait and I will try

to find out the particular combinations of what they mix... but it includes 5%

Salicylic Acid that dissolves in a Castor Oil solution... then it is shaken up

into Olive Oil... this sounds so simple to be true... but I am using it and it

works... In two weeks the treatments will be complete and the doctor will be

writing out a prescription for the pharmacist to mix up the exact solution for

me.... I will share it with all of you... so, be patient.

Supposedly stubborn scalp lesions take 5%, then lesser lesions ease on down to

2.5 % and lastly at 1 %.... so, please do not consider the Skin Cap... and be

leary of the Blue Cap... not worth the risk... just because to can manage

getting it does not mean it is safe... I know.

I will keep you all posted. I have other tricks to zap the lesions... but I am

off for more treatments... so, keep up your spirits and stay away from all these

suspicious products... natural is best, especially for our scalps... too close

to the brain and so much blood supply.

I just wrote a message to Orin, I will even try to find the FDA warning ... I

have kept it ... but unsure where I placed it... it is dangerous and has caused

several deaths... too high in steroids... read my response to Orin's posting...

please.

Hi Jeannie -- If you're going to color your hair on a regular basis, you

might look for one that doesn't contain any peroxide or ammonia. Health food

stores sell some of these. I use one called Herbatint. It comes with a

conditioner and leaves my hair nice and shiny. And it doesn't seem to hurt

my scalp, or affect it in any way. -- Jan O', Alaska

And to top it off, baldness runs rampant in my family.

Used to have a very full head of hair.

Hate the idea of wigs.

Maybe when it's all gone I just put a large hoop in my ear.

Thanks Jan,

I don't know if the stuff I use has paroxide in it, But it does leave

my hair better off than without it. I can't use most herbal stuff

because of skin sensitivities. I'm allergic to most herbs, whether

teas, ointments, or whatever. I get rashes, sneezing and

wheezing. More autoimmune disease.!!! LOL

It's strange, I can handle man made chemicles and live in a city

invironment, but I am allergic to the " naturals " and have trouble

breathing in the country.

So, if it's labeled, all natural, non allergenic, I'm probably allergic

to it! LOL

I tried a tea tree shampoo once and my whole body broke out. I

don't know if it was the tea tree oil or the other herbals in it. Hard

to tell. Aloe Vera is one item I know I can use and that's about it.

Thanks,

Jeani

I'm in need of some help/advice from some of you who've experienced P

for a little on my ankles and elbows for years but this winter it's

beginning to get the best of me -- especially this crust that's

-- Hi. Right now i'm using P & S shampoo. it's over the counter but i

can only get it thru a pharmecy. I've had it on my scalp since i was

a litte kid and have tried all kinds of shampoos and ointments. My

dermo gave me a lotion that has a lanolin base, but the pharmecy

makes it up. I only use it when my scalp gets real bad because it's

greasy and smelly. The Fructice dandruff shampoo works pretty well

too. and it smells good.

Enbrel really helps. I also use the strongest coal tar based shampoo I can

find. Right now Denorex original formula is available and the best for me.

If I can't find that I use the maximum coal tar formula T-Gel. Don't waste

your money on the S-Acid stuff from any brand.
