I've had pa for 7 years and for about 5 have had a spot under my left front

rib that hurts like a bruise. I get sporadic pain on the sides of my ribs

sometimes feeling like knives between them sometimes just like a soarness.

Anybody have any advise or knowledge of if this is pa or fibro or am I just

crazy...

You ar not crazy because I get pains in the ribs also. I get pains in the

sternum which feel like someone punched me in the chest sometimes.

A friend of mine has the type of pain you described and her doctor told her

it was 'shingles', left-over dormant chicken pox which flare-up and

affecting the nerve endings in that area. I know she is in a lot of pain.

The doc has her on Vicoden. I am not saying that is what you have, but you

could ask your doctor the next time you see him/her. Jo Ellen

Hi,

about 7 years ago the lower front right ribs felt bruised - lasted at

least 6 months - this was about 5 years before i was even diagnosed

with pa - i now, in hindsight, believe this was the beginning of my

pa - i now have probs with my spine in 2 locations, right on the

spine itself - one below the waist but the worst one is right where

the bra strap crosses - hence i don't wear a bra much anymore - as

well, at times i get pinched nerve pain in that exact location - it

doesn't happen too frequently but when it does it is awful and in

need to try to stretch my back out, arch it, etc. it can last for 10

or more minutes... anyone had that happen?

,

I had costochondritis, which sounds like what you have, for over 5

years. Talk about a pain (in the ribcage!) It started out as what

felt like a lump over the lower front left side of my ribs. I was

only a teenager when I felt this and didn't realize it was due to

swelling. I remember asking all my friends if they had the same type

of " lump. " Sometimes the pain in the area was unbearable. It was

almost constantly sore, and sometimes I would twist a certain way or

raise my hands over my head or cough or sneeze and have a stabbing

pain shoot through me at that location, which could double me over.

After several evaluations, doctors concluded I had costochondritis.

I was treated for months with physical therapy which only helped a

little. After years of suffering, I finally received some cortisone

injections, which were effective for weeks at a time. But I decided

I couldn't keep doing that. I eventually went to a chiropractor who

helped because she knew I had some form of arthritis. Another doctor

diagnosed me with fibromyalgia after I had suffered from the

costochondritis for many years. But the FMS diagnosis ended up being

questionable. The pain in the ribs eventually went away but a whole

new set of problems set in, including swelling and pain in my

fingers and feet (not signs of FMS). When I was finally diagnosed

with psoriatic arthritis, all my symptoms finally made sense,

including the costochondritis.

I rarely have problems with my ribs now, but one thing I noticed

that can aggravate the site is having gastrointestinal problems,

such as being bloated, gassy and having reflux. Seems the pressure

underneath the site tends to irritate it. So make sure these

problems, which are often associated with IBS, FMS, and even PA, are

under control and that might help. Good luck.
