For one thing, on the PA front I would hate to eliminate one of my medication options, particularly if it was something that was working for me. I don't know how bad your PA has been, but for me I know the pain was so bad before MTX that I just can't ever, ever imagine eliminating MTX as an option. Secondly, on the weight front, I'm sure you're well aware of the risks, and I'm sure you've tried other diets. But gastric bypass is not proven to keep the weight off, and with the risks... I just wanted to suggest that you consider trying a low-carb approach to losing weight, if you have not already done so. No other diet ever worked for me, but with low-carbing I lost 125 lbs. I understand the pain of being obese, and I understand the frustration of diets not seeming to work. But if you find the *right* diet for you, you can lose the weight in a much safer manner, and one which will not affect the rest of your life so drastically as a gastric bypass will. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visit my personal web site at http://members.shaw.ca/tljohnson/
Guest guest
> hello do you lose your hair if your are taking methotrexatrate? Hi ! I suppose it is like everything else with this wacky disease and the various attempts to control it -- depends on the individual. But I lost most of my hair on mtx. Funny, years ago when I was a newlywed I heard that eventually I would start to look like my husband. But I thought I'd get tall When I went off mtx and began Enbrel I used Rogaine for women (it was quite a ritual, with my husband gamely applying it twice daily -- to me, that is). But I eventually gave that up and the hair still came in -- but kinky rather than the stick-straight hair I've had all my life. No problems with the Enbrel. I really like having hair and not being sick. Good luck! Gentle hugs, Donna
Guest guest
Why don't you try Enbrel first. If it appears to work, taper off MTX and see. If the Enbrel is as good/better than MTX, you might be able to have the surgery. claire Re: [ ] Methotrexate and Enbrel At 02:53 AM 7/14/03 +0000, you wrote: >Hi everyone. It helped very quickly and have been very pleased with the results. Good luck!
Guest guest
, At first I lost a lot of hair with MTX, but I was also on a lot of other drugs, including 6 week course of Vancomycin continuously thru an IV pic line. I lost a lot, so I cut it all off, it grew back without the gaps from the drugs. So there is hope. Carol M.
Guest guest
Hello I just turned 40 and I have had various symptoms for several years. The one that caught my eye was your knee problem. I too had synovial chondromitosis and had the synovial membrane removed several years ago. It definitely is related to PA and was one of the first problems that I had. My tendonitis has occured in bicep muscle at both ends, left thumb, left foot at the achilles and the plantar fascia (bottom tendon). I am on Mobic for anti-inflammatory and Meth at 20mg/wk. My foot is great providing I don't miss the Mobic. Since being on Meth the inflammation of my thumb and ring finger has greatly subsided but definitely not the way it used to be. Get on the meds as soon as possible because permanent irreversible damage can take place very quickly. It will undoubtedly be under control with the meds so not to worry..just don't put it off. Dave [ ] Methotrexate and Enbrel Hello All, I am a new member of the Psoriatic Arthritis family as of yesterday and i welcome any advice you have for me. I am a 48 year old stay at home dad, with a 14 month old son. I have had psoriasis since the mid 1980's, but it wasn't until i had knee surgery 2 months ago and asked the surgeon if psoriasis could be a contributing factor in my knee problem (it turned out to be an excess of sinovial tissue) that anyone finally put a link to joint problems i have had to my psoriasis. He sent me to a rheumatologist. What another doctor had told me was tendinitis in my elbow and that i had gotten physical therapy on a couple times, now turns out to be psoriatic arthritis. So i will have a series of xrays and blood tests and he gave me some ideas about treatment to think about. I will meet with my rheumatologist again in a couple of weeks to formulate a treatment plan. His initial recomendation yesterday was to start with methotrexate and then add enbrel to it. Has anyone tried this combination? He also mentioned Remicade as a possibility. I want to be aggressive in treating my PA since it wasn't caught as early as it might have been and I want to be able to play catch with my son when he grows older. Thanks for any help, [Editor's Note: , the combination of MTX and Enbrel is one of the most frequently prescribed treatments - and one of the most successful.
