Gordon,

Here in Vancouver, Washington we have what is known as C-van. It is part of

our local public bus transportation system. It is a service that will pick up

and deliver persons with disabilities to where ever they need to go,

shopping, church, a friend's home, the doctor, or wherever, and then pick

them back up later when they are finished and take them back home. The

service is free to the person with the disability. If they have a partner,

friend, or relative riding with them (my blind friend's husband rides with

her), that person rides for half-fare which is about $1.00. It does have its

limitations though. You have to schedule your trips way ahead of time, and

you can be sanctioned from riding for a number of months if you dont' cancel

a trip far enough in advance. The amount of time that you are ride to and

from your destination depends on how many other passengers there are and to

where they are all headed.

Vancouver, Washington sits across the river from Portland, Oregon, and they

Portland has a similar program that works in coordination with Vancouver's

program, so people can make connections and travel in Portland as well. I

don't know what they have in other states.

The best thing I did for myself was to find an old-fashioned man. He opens

doors for me, helps me out of the car, opens jars, opens pill bottles, picks

up the newspaper, rubs my feet - and seems to feel privileged to do so.

He's thrilled that I let him do all these courtly and gentlemanly things.

Never mind that I look like Brunhilde and outweigh him by a few pounds. I

realize this won't work for every woman, especially if you have one of those

pesky jealous husbands. But on the off chance that you find yourself at

loose ends, single, over 50 and with a list of men to choose from, go for

the old-fashined one, preferably foreign. Purely for medicinal reasons, of

course.

Carlson,

I think I am going to trade my model in for the kind that you have. My

husband is polite and will open things but the foot rubs he will not do.

What store can I go to to find such a man? <g>

(who's single and all for the idea of an

old-fashioned man... but having trouble finding one!

:-))

I've had the same one for 45 years; he has come a very long way in being

protective of me, understanding of my pain, helpful in making suggestions for

things I should try. He's not great at rubbing feet, but otherwise.....

How funny you should mention this! I was *just* this afternoon looking at

such a stool and almost bought one for the very same reason. I have been

managing in the kitchen somewhat, but I definitely pay for it with

increased pain, and I don't want that. I enjoy cooking, and a healthy diet

is so important to me, so a stool seems like the best route for now.
