My doc recommended glucosamine (the study that I know of was done on it, and

not on chondroitin). It's over-the-counter and expensive, but I've heard

that the cheapest price is at Walmart. The dosage should be over 1000 mg a

day (I take 3000). Keep an eye on it -- last time I got it it was on a

2-for-1 sale (at Albertson's grocery store, with the Albertson's card).

The study I referred to showed that people with arthritis in the knee had no

further progression of it over 3 years if they took glucosamine, where

people with arthritis in the knee who didn't take it had progression of the

disease. It's definitely worth the money. Here's a summary of the study:

http://www.healthandage.com/PHome/gid2=1234

If you look the study up on the Web, note that most sites that reference it

are sellers of chondroitin & glucosamine. It took me a while to find the

above article, which is informational, not promotional.

My doc did suggest taking this. It is expensive, but widely

available over the counter. I'd suggest getting it at a health food -

type store, though. I always think that's a good idea for

supplements like this.

Another question for y'all--which of the NSAID's is supposed to be

easiest on the stomach? Thanks-

Jodi

It hasn't bothered my stomach, and I have a very sensitive stomach, can't

eat most fruits, etc. Even when I take my mega-multivitamin I have to have

food with it, but not the glucosamine.

Glucosamine and chondroiton are definetely in my bag of tricks for

managing CP. If you hadn't seen an earlier post of mine combine this

with a good skin rub to attend to the skin inflammation and bruising

as well. Of cause you still have to take your painkillers such as

tramal and tramal (SR) slow release.

I reckon if you can keep the inflamation under control that keeps the

swelling under control and that helps us all to sleep at night unless

you are like me and have to take sleeping pills every so often to

stay on top of this bloody condition!! (It's winter here again!)

Dear Carla, Just to let you know, I'm starting on a high dose of

Glusosamine Chondroitrin. When I was at Shand's Hospital in Gainesville

Florida for facial pain, the doctors there all agreed it would help with the

TMJ and the bone loss in my jaw joint. I used to take it and thought it did

help some, and just got out of the habit. The type I buy also has MSN in it

which is supposed to help with pain also, but I have no idea if that really

would help you. I'll let you know if helps me and if you try it, let us

know if you notice any relief. It sounds like though you and your boyfriend

both need some pain medication to get you through the rough spots right now.

Can you call your doctor and ask for a small amount until your next

appointment? I know they don't like to prescribe pain medication, but when

they know it's a small amount and you are coming to see them soon, sometimes

they don't have a problem with it. It's worth a phone call.

I can sure understand the hip and knee pain. Right now my left hip is

killing me and my thigh is swollen, and my right knee hurts almost all the

time. So when it comes to steps now " I don't have a good leg to stand

on " ...lol...(I wonder if that's where that saying came from...) Seriously,

though it's not much fun and hurts like crazy. Mine seems to bother me the

most at night. I swear everything seems to hurt more once the sun goes

down. I guess it's because I " m finally alone with my thoughts (unless you

count my two little dogs and my husband)...but I sure hate to wake them up

to tell them I'm in pain. I really agree that Vioxx worked the best. Of

course, I have a minor heart problem now, that might be from Vioxx, but who

knows? It could be from all the other drugs I take just as well. I've

never had a heart attack and to me that's the good news. I hope they find

something that works as well as Vioxx and soon.

Good luck Carla. I hope things improve for you soon and we get some much

needed answers. Take care, Fran [ ] Glucosamine Chondroitin

I've having trouble sending messages to the group for some reason

says I'm not subscribed but I am. I hope this message will get

posted this way via the web. I'm copying and pasting the text of the

message I've been trying to send below.

Everyone take care!

Hi everyone,

I know it has ben a while. Life's been pretty crazy and hectic for

me, working on Avon sales, feeling broke, and being there for my

boyfriend and his kids!

I have a couple questions for the group. Has anyone heard about the

natural product Glucosamine Chondroitin? I have been told by my

grandma, my chore

provider, and a taxi driver/friend that this has done wonders for

people with arthritis! Supposedly it takes a little while to get

into your system, but

once it works, you feel great! I'm almost desparate to try anything

since the pulling of Vioxx off the market. That was the best anti-

inflamatory ever!

It worked wonderfully for me, and now that I've switched to Bextra

10mg a day I don't have near the good results I had with the vioxx.

I think I am over

the sinus infection/bronchitis and urinary tract infections that I

have had, and haven't been able to take my mtx. That helps so much,

I can tell that

I haven't been able to take it. Lately, my left hip where the pa is

at and right knee have been bothering me so bad. I already have poor

balance just

because, and when my body aches and I don't want to feel a wave of

pain through my hip and leg, I walk very carefully and even then

sometimes i get shooting

waves of pain through my hip and leg whenever I run into something,

step wrong into a hole in the ground or crack in the sidewalk. I've

noticed some swelling

around my hip and thigh area at night after I've had a long day of

being on my feet. I feel like I'm falling apart some days, and so

does my boyfriend.

He has arthritis in his right knee, it's not pa, just in general

arthritis. We both joke that we are going to get married in a

nursing home!! He has

discovered that while he was obtaining his third seeing eye dog, that

when he fell a couple times and thought he reinjured his bad knee,

that he may have

broken his leg. He noticed part of the bone down from his knee

pertruding under the skin like it may be broken. He is in so much

pain right now, and

it's going to be difficult if he has to have his knee replaced and

his leg rebroken to mend it. His doctor put him on a new anti-

inflamatory, not sure

of the name starts with a D, the geeneric form, but it's not

working. So we both feel so much pain right now.

I just wondered what anyone thought of the glucosamine chondroitin

and if anyone had any ideas on how my boyfriend could minimize his

pain temperarally

as he deals with some other matters before going to the doctor...oh

and he went to his doctor last week and they never did any x-rays

which ticked him

off because you'd think that he'd want to get a look at it if he had

said that he fell and possibly injured his knee. Gotta love the

doctor! You hear

about things being left inside people from operations...ok...I'm done

venting now. Sorry for the ramble. It's just that I've not written

in so long,

and I'm just needing to vent. I'm glad to know that I've got

somewhere to come to, to get this off my shoulders etc. Hope to hear

from you all soon.

I've heard that Glucosamine Chondroitin is more effective for osteoarthritis

than for RA or PA. Not sure if that's true. I tried it and discovered that I

am extremely allergic (as I am to shellfish) and my ankles, wrists, feet, etc.

all blew up like a whale in a Melville novel. Hope others have had a more

positive experience.

Wishing you wellness,

Hi Fran,

Well, I have a prescription for Hydrocodone. He went to the hospital

today and discovered he's got severe tendenitis. He also was prescribed

Hydrocodone. I am trying to take Tylenol Arthritis instead of the

Hydrocodone for two reasons. I don't want to get too adicted to it, and

second I want to donate plasma and I can't do that if I take that. I

have to wait a week before I can donate. I've decided to keep with the

Glucosamine Chondroitin and see what happens. I'll let you know.

Big hugs to you Fran!

Carla

Dear Carla, I used to worry about being addicted to pain medication too.

But I've read so many reports and more and more for chronic pain patients

they are finding out that most of the time, they don't have to worry. I

think it's something you can keep tabs on and if you see yourself needing

more and more, talk to your doctor about it. In the past 3 years, I've been

able to keep my medication level at the same dosage and that at least gives

me sense of control...lol. My pain was so bad that most of the time,

addiction didn't really enter my mind. My only concern was lowering the

pain and being able to make it through another day. So they have given me

back some of my life. I doubt I'd be here with out my pain medication and

I'm sure some people would consider me addicted just from that alone.

What a great person you are to donate plasma! I'm on so many drugs I'm sure

they wouldn't want anything from me...lol. The fact you can go through the

pain to donate shows you are a really strong person. I hope someone

benefits from your unselfishness. Take care and hope things improve soon

for you and your boyfriend. Love, Fran

Hi Fran,

Well I agree that I think I could keep myself from getting adicted to

pain medication. Your right, keeping the same dosages can give you the

feeling of control. I have not actually gone in and donated plasma yet.

I'm hoping too this week or next. I called them and told them all the

nedications I was on, and they didn't see any problem except for that

one. My boyfriend was worried about me having more problems with anemia

by donating. I told him I had to figure out some way else to pay my

bills cause I wanted him to be able to pay his bills and not spend his

money all on me with helping me with my bills. He cares so much about

me and makes sure I'm taken care of, but I care just as much and want to

make sure he takes care of his bills too...smile. Anyways, when I do go

in and see if I can donate, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hugs,

Carla
