Guest guest
I am sure you have already been told this, but my husband has the same problem. He knows where every restroom is on his sales route, and we gauge our trips by locations and time food was eaten. He had all the same tests, the specialist advised him to take " bulk building fibre pills " daily ( we take the generic so I can't remember the brand name). Kinda of like Metamucil in pill form. He takes them every night, and it gets him thru the night and more regulated during the day. I see him suffer with this, and the Dr. are very unhelpful, even the specialist. So I hope someone can find answers. This is a very demoralizing problem for him to discuss, that is difficult issue. Thank you for being brave enough to bring up the topic Gentle Hugs & Prayers, Carol M.

I was told that it was not IBS, but I often wonder. I have tried to pin point the cause(s) and to no avail I cannot say that I have found one source of the problem. Yes, I think stress contributes some, but to make it full blown IBS I am not sure that that would be the only culprit. I have adjusted my diet, the way in which I take my meds and all the wonderful things docs recommend to do to try to get you " regular " . One note though, I never had this trouble until after I had my gallbladder removed in 2000. I had the exact opposite trouble. How knows? I just try not to eat when I am going to be out and about because I know that as soon as that food hits my stomach, I will be in the restroom soon after. That is a pain! Wish I could shed more light on this, but I think it is just a mystery to most.

Patty, My wife also had diarrhea for quite awhile until she happened to mention that the calcium pills she was taking also contained magnesium. After I told her that magnesium is a laxative, she started taking calcium pills without magnesium and never had another problem. -- Ron
Guest guest
Ron, Thanks for the headsup on the calcium w/magnesium. I'd run across that thought somewhere in my research this weekend but didn't know just how seriously to consider it. That's an easy one to check out. Now I'm wondering why my rheumy didn't notice that since I took ALL my meds in a plastic bag on my last visit on 4/2. Instead, she suggested I discontinue the azulfidine. So it's magnesium as in milk of magnesia, huh? A grateful Pineywoods East Texan [Ed. Note: Yep, that's right Patty - magnesium is the same stuff that's in Milk of Magnesia. The ironic thing is that my wife had been to several doctors about her diarrhea, but no one could figure out what the problem was. It persisted for several weeks and during that time she had to go to the bathroom *very* frequently. It was just by accident that one evening she happened to be complaining about the huge calcium pills she was taking, and mentioned that they also contained magnesium. All I said was " Magnesium is a laxative, " and she got this stunned look on her face. The problem went away as soon as she stopped taking the calcium/magnesium pills. She was astounded that none of the doctors had mentioned anything about not taking too much magnesium, but it was an over-the-counter pill and doctors don't usually ask about the over-the-counter drugs that their patients take. Lots of different things can cause diarrhea so it's not likely this is your problem, but it's something everyone should be aware of, and as you say it's very easy to check for and correct. I have IBS and anxiety makes it worse but does not take it away. I found a IBS message board that was wonderful. I was at a point where I could not leave the house and nothing was helping. On the board they recommended Caltrate 600 (the purple bottle) and to take one with each meal. After two days, I was cured. I could go out and be normal again. In fact, I had to cut it down to one or two pills a day because the three pills were too much. The one in the purple bottle is the best because it has to be calcium carbonate with just a little magnesium or else too much magnesium give you diarrhea. Try it, trust me. It works. Guest guest
Patty, I have been a member for a long time now, but don't post much. Its funny that you mention a connection with IBS and Anxiety. My Bro-in-Law had problems with IBS for years very simmilar to the problems you mention. He couldn't eat much of anything because it would go right through him. He is a professor at UCSD and his IBS would get agervated when he had to present a research paper to his supervisors. He dropped so much weight that he was skin and bones and whenever we had a family get together the poor guy was afraid to eat anything for fear that he would get stuck in the bathroom for the rest of the day. Now he is on Paxil and he says that his IBS symptoms have completely disapeared. He has been taking it for nearly a year now and in a recent picture of him I see has put on some weight and is looking great! He says that he can now eat pretty much anything he wants now and doesn't have to worry so much about his stomach. I believe that there are different solutions for every I hope that you get some relief soon because I know how awful this problem can be. Are you on any type of anti-anxiety medication at all? Guest guest
I'm ssure you all have tried Immodium AD. That always works for me, but I know I don't have really severe problems. I just need to stay pretty much away from salads, which I really enjoy.
