Guest guest
*Philly First In The Nation To Require Mercury Disclosures* By: JENNY DeHUFF, The Bulletin 05/14/2008 http://www.thebulletin.us/site/index.cfm?newsid=19686944 & BRD=2737 & PAG=461 & dept_i\ d=576361 & rfi=8 Philadelphia - Freya Koss said she developed multiple sclerosis, lupus and other health problems from a silver dental filling containing mercury. She and several other consumer advocates and health professionals were at City Hall yesterday to tell their stories of cavity fillings gone wrong. The Pennsylvania Coalition for Mercury-Free Dentistry and Consumers for Dental Choice (CDC) stood in front of large signs warning of the dangers of silver amalgam fillings - most notable for their high levels of the neurotoxin mercury. In December, Philadelphia City Council unanimously passed legislation backed by Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown that requires dentists to distribute patient brochures disclosing the dangers of silver amalgam fillings. " The textbooks don't tell us this, " said Charlie Brown, spokesman for the CDC. " It is absurd to think nothing is damaged when a neurotoxin is placed an inch from someone's brain. " " I quickly learned of the harrowing effects of mercury when an old filling was removed and a silver filling replaced it, " said Ms. Koss, director of the Pennsylvania Coalition for Mercury-Free Dentistry. " Seven days later, I got sick. " Don Robbins operates a mercury-free dentist practice out of Exton. He called himself one of the few dentists committed to informing patients of the risk of silver amalgam fillings. Holding a jar of dental mercury filling, Mr. Robbins pointed out the skull and crossbones icon on the label, warning that the substance is hazardous to children and to handle the container with gloves and protective gear. " It's deeply disturbing what's going on in our profession, " Mr. Robbins said. " Less than 60 percent of dentists in the U.S. belong to the American Dental Association (ADA). Silver fillings are 50 percent mercury. If you have two, three or more silver fillings, you are above the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) limit for mercury intake. " Earlier in the day, consumers protested statements made by the president of the Pennsylvania Dental Association. " No dentist places mercury in a patient's mouth, " he was reported to have said. The alternatives to these types of fillings are typically white composite resin fillings, which are more commonly used today but don't last as long as silver fillings. Guest guest
WOW! I live in Phila. and I wasn't even aware this was going on!! I strickly forbid amalgam in my kids mouths.....unfortunatly, I found out about the dangers of dental fillings (silver) after my son had 6 fiilings placed in his mouth at 2yo....he developed cavaties from Juicy juice while on the WIC program according to the dentist....anyway, about two weeks after the fillings were in my son was bouncing off the walls!! He started hyperactive behavior off the scale. Always felt sick in his stomach too. Thank goodness those baby teeth are starting fall out now. Informed consent of the dangers of amalgam fillings...I'm all for it. Guest guest
Children's fillings also may have fluoride in them. When I found that they put those in my little son's mouth, I made them replace them for free. I now ask for adult fillings for him if needed. Guest guest
Well dentists don't always know what they're talking about either. My ped. dentist thought Jon's fluoridosis was bottle rot.. he never had a bottle! So then it was well, he's using you like a pacifier and the milk is already sweet and then the sugar you eat makes it even sweeter. Um. No. you don't understand how the breast works. It doesn't drip into the mouth if he's not actively sucking the milk out and it's not sweeter just b/c I eat foods w/ sugar in them. Upon my own research, his teeth matched pictures of people with flouridosis. has the same thing going on with his top teeth. I know the dentist will want to crown them but I'm not going to do that either. They're baby teeth. That's too much expense. Nita (crew chief) and the crew: 15, Jon 13, 11, 9, 6, Christian (7/16/03 to 8/22/04), 2 and Isaac, 2/3/08 http://momof6.dotphoto.com <http://momof6.dotphoto.com/> for not necessarily current pictures http://nitasspot.blogspot.com Learn from the mistakes of others. Trust me... you can't live long enough to make them all yourself.
Guest guest
Yes, you were being duped. THEY say the risk is greater only because they see no risk in the mercury. Naturally, anything would then be greater than zero. And yes, at least the baby teeth will fall out. We've gone to the same practice for years and give them a lot of business with four kids. They all know how strongly I feel about no fluoride, mercury, etc. It was not my regular dentist who put the fillings in and naturally it never occurred to me to ask if fluoride was in them! He casually mentioned it and I flipped out. I went home, fretted and fumed, then a filling FELL OUT two days later. When I took him to get it replaced, I said while we're here, replace the others, thanks. I don't even think I asked for a refund but I'm sure I moaned about the cost. When the bill came it was on there, but showing waived by my regular dentist. I'm sure it's rare for that to be done for free since we're talking around $500+ worth of work--and none of it covered by insurance at that point.
