Guest guest
Hi I would love some input on melatonin versus 5 HTP. Has anyone tried both of these and found either one worked better for there child? What dose did you give for each?
Guest guest
They are pretty unrelated. 5 HTP for obsession, need for sameness, rigidity, etc. Generally inositol also helps a lot, often works better, and has the very major advantage that it is a sweet powder he'll think is a treat. It is however excluded on the specific carbohydrate diet so you can only use 5 HTP if you are sticking to that rigorously. Melatonin to sleep. Start at 3 mg. work up. Use some time release in addition if he goes to sleep and gets up 5 hours later. Andy > > Hi I would love some input on melatonin versus 5 HTP. Guest guest
We use melatonin to help with sleep. We use a combo of 5-HTP and Gaba for anxiety. Guest guest
My girl is NT but very mercury toxic. She is on both. I give 5hpt in the am and melatonin at night. I think she gets 3mg of 5hpt in the am, and 1mg melatonin in the pm. She is 12 though, not sure how much for littler ones. -- In , " l.largey " <l.largey@...> wrote: > > Hi I would love some input on melatonin versus 5 HTP. Guest guest
Hi, Our DAN recommended 5htp (short for 5 hydroxytriptophan) for my older child (6) but not for the younger one (almost 4) because she said he's too young for it. She does recommend melatonin in both for now. But, she said the 5htp is the precursor to melatonin and serotonin in the body; and that she would prefer we get off of melatonin at some point in the future. She felt that 5htp would help my 6 yo to manufacture these hormones himself and eventually, he could self-regulate his sleep cycles. He gets 5htp about an hour before bedtime, and melatonin about 30 minutes before bedtime. HTH. Amy --- Jada <paxlforme@...> wrote: > My girl is NT but very mercury toxic. She is on > both. Guest guest
hmmm, that's interesting. What I read in Andy's book is 5htp: " the metabolic precursor to serotonin and melatonin. Unlike its precursor tryptophan, 5-htp can easily be converted into serotonin in the body with reduced blood pressure and intestinal disturbances. It can be used with prescription decarboxylase for parkinson's treatment...those who respond to SSR's may respond well to 5-htp " . It is touted as an antidepressant in Andy's book and recommended for such a problem. It is good for regulating brain/moods. And it seems to do that well. As for regulating his sleep cycle, I found that addressing adrenal problems did that in our house. Why is there a NEED to get off melatonin? And this may not happen if you don't chelate to remove the metals that interfere with body functions responsible for regulating circadian rhythms and hormones. Melatonin is good for the immune systems as well. People with mercury do not make enough of it, and it seems likely you'll need it as long as mercury is there. Not sure why the a4 year old is too young? Unless she felt that the 4 year old did not need it. Do you think the 4 yr old does? It seems reasonable to give this approach a try. > > > > > > Hi I would love some input on melatonin versus 5 > > HTP. Guest guest
We put the boys on melatonin in July 07 per the developmental ped... the DAN said its ok to use it for a while but because it replaces the body's natural hormone, the goal is to get the body to produce its own. Not to make the body dependent on melatonin as a supplement. Don't know why the little one was too young. Didn't think to ask at the time. We plan to chelate as soon as the little guys' bodies are healthy enough. My 4 year old can stay awake for five days straight unless he is medicated for sleep... If anyone needs help for sleep, its him! We went through three different prescription drugs for him. He required so much, we were afraid he'd stop breathing. He takes 4 droppers of liquid melatonin per night. I have to admit that my 7 year old (sorry I said 6 earlier, I forgot he had a birthday last week) won't fall asleep on 4 droppers of melatonin without the added 5htp. My hubby and I were exhausted, we're still tired but slowly catching up. --- Jada <paxlforme@...> wrote: > hmmm, that's interesting. Guest guest
For my son, melatonin was very effective at beginning of night and make him sleep easely but it's effect is short. Whenever I give him melatonin he gets up at middle of night, so we couldn't use it. 5HTP has more smooth and long effect. But be carefull about overdose, because it cause tooo vivid dreams and this is not good for sleep. For my son best solution is to give 5HTP at afternoon not at night.
