At our house, it depends on the person...Half of our household won't

even touch them...the other half does fine with the brazil nuts, tho

we stay at one or two nuts a day...however, my older girl eats them

at will, and handfuls at a time, with no apparent intolerances. It

looks like they have 100 mcg of selenium each nut - been info hunt'g

in smallish spurts today...pretty sure that it is mcg ;)

However, we do not keep them in the house all the time...It is

a " sometimes " thing...usually, I get sunflower seeds - grown in the

dakotas ;) - and Everyone eats those daily and regularly AND does

well with them. It shows when we don't have them in the house, so

they are a staple now :) ....btw, my older son, with the current

selenium issues, lives on his own, and these particular sunflower

seeds are not sold near where he lives.

I have had a hard time getting/keeping the selenium supps in

place...every time I try to add them in, after a couple weeks, I have

kids refusing All supps. again. urg. It is on the list of things to

add in later, try again, and such...

According to the following study:

" Chang, C.; Walter H. Gutenmann, Charlotte M. Reid,

J. Lisk (1995). " Selenium content of Brazil nuts from two geographic

locations in Brazil " . Chemosphere 30 (4): 801-802. 0045-6535. "

brazils can contain as much as 1180% of the USRDV, although selenium

content varies greatly depending on growing location, conditions,

etc.

Also, I've yet to hear of anyone with as many sensitivities as myself

(I respond very poorly to sodium selenite and selenium yeast), and

I'm tolerating Lifelink's sodium selenate very well. Hope this is

helpful.

Just wanted to note that the selenate and selenite forms of selenium

are very much Not recommended, esp. for mercury toxic people...ummm,

pretty much " over & over & over " in archives...

.....

((())) snipped...

I respond very poorly to sodium selenite and selenium yeast), and

Please see my post on this, #210022. My son didn't tolerate selenium

at all until we switched to a specific form:

Se-methyl-selenocysteine. His RBC levels kept getting lower and lower

no matter how hard I tried, until I switched to this form.

Thank you for the correction. Can selenate metabolize into selenite

or does it pose a different problem altogether? Aside from selenium

yeast, which form(s) is/are typically considered acceptable?

Comments Interspersed below...

===not sure, from what I gather, looks like an organic/inorganic

issue...inorganic being (waayy) problematic.

Aside from selenium

====selenomethionine is most recommended. Hard to find for us - we

tend to use the selenium yeast...a search

for " andy " " andrewhallcutler " " selenium " should get you more of the

basics on this...either on list here, or at onibasu.com
