We noticed something like this early on in chelation, on rounds, a keen interest

in the dryer or the washing machine. Also, I noticed that after dinner out

every Sunday I would take her and put her in the car seat in her mother's car

and while I buckling her in she would always ask me the same ?, had I seen her

Mr. Potato Head game, lol.

It was temporary, lasted about a couple of months, six at the most and the

obsession was not present all the time although she would ask me that ? every

single Sunday, then it disappeared and was gone for good. She was pretty close

to Asperger's in the beginning, would have made the diagnosis " except " for the

obsessive interest in objects. Obsessiveness over objects is an Asperger trait

so I thought maybe it was related to that, if that makes sense.

As I watched her recover cognitvely she went from pdd-nos to Asperger's to ADD

to no diagnosis.

I don't think it's related to any supplements and I do think it will fade with

time.

She was, early on, spacey on Ala, but extremely euphoric, which is to be

expected.

[ ] Can ALA cause obsessive thinking?

Hi,

My 4 years old son has been on chelation for 9 months (around 30 rounds)

following Andy's protocol. He is currently on 25 mg ALA and 25 mg DMSA 3

hourly. We have seen improvements in many areas, but one thing has really

been annoying us. He is always obsessed with one object. This includes

drainage hole, trees etc etc. Now he is really obsessed with sandals or

thongs. He likes looking at them, talking about them and even asking people

taking them off. Could this be caused by chelating or due to his body lack

of certain supplements? He is on all supplements suggested by Andy. I recall

in Andy's book, he mentions that ALA can cause obsessive thinking pattern.

Has anyone experienced the similar problem and how long (or how many rounds)

can I expect it will improve? Any input will be really helpful here.

I have a question, how long do these obsessions last? It sounds to me like

something another parent said about hyperactivity during recovery. She said

that her son developed a facination with his environment, object by object.

This might be that, not so much a side effect of obesssion as an awakening to

the details of objects and people all around him. It might not be a negative,

but rather, your son noticing for the first time, the trees, the drain, how

people where sandals, like that. Remember that our kids have been in a deep

freeze, isolated by pain and inflamation. Recovering for some kids must feel

like a magical experience, filled with wonders.

Obsessive behavior is different than what you are describing. I just got

through listening to the lecture on the MIND website about PANDAS. Kids with

PANDAS do things like wash their hands five hundred or more time a day, or one

that makes their bed over and over and over, all day long because it isn't right

yet. That's obsession. Obsession carries with it a singlemindedness that

separates the person from the rest of their life. Does that describe your son?

Hi ,

As I was reading your reply, I felt you were talking about my son. He would

ask me the same question or make the same comment when we drive pass some

places. He had this obsession on objects all the time, not just on rounds.

He is sometimes spacey and yes, extremely euphoric. Our DAN! doctor and I

always thought it was yeast flaring up, but his GI-Function test didn't show

any yeast problem. Can I ask how you knew the spaciness was caused by ALA

not yeast?

Your reply has really given me so much hope. Thanks you so much,

I would say each one lasts 1 - 2 months. It used to be drain, then tree and

the latest is thong. He is still very interested in drain and trees but in a

less degree. He also likes throwing, dropping or posting things in holes.

Whenever he is doing these, he is really happy and wants to tell everyone

what he is doing!!! I hope what you said is right and one parent's reply has

really given me some hope. Thanks so much for your input.

Hi ,

I think the reason I assumed it was the ALA and not yeast is because we did not

have a lot of problems with yeast. And although we did notice this obsessiveness

with objects while " on " round, we did note them a few times when we were NOT on

round.

We had always used a combination of dmsa/ala and then at round 30 we tried a

" just ALA " round. And that is when the spaciness occured, big time so we knew it

was the ALA. It didn't bother her, she was completely oblivious and totally

happy, but it drove my dd and I crazy so we paired the ALA with td-dmps and the

spaciness went away.

We tried an Ala only round at round 50 and no more spaciness was present.

Even though these obsessions occur on and off round, I still think they are part

of mercury toxicity and/or chelation. If what you are worried about is that

chelation is making them permanently worse, I don't believe so but chelation may

stir them up as we found here.

And it's probably important to note that the obsessions here were fleeting, just

a comment or two about the washer or dryer and that every Sunday ? about Mr.

Potato Head (lol) that she had.

I didn't ask, but was assuming, but did your son have any obsessions before

starting ALA? Our little one did not, I never heard her ask about the

washer/dryer or Mr. Potato Head before chelation.

Also didn't ask, but assuming that you are dosing the ALA every 3 hours? This is

important and if it were me, I would also try dosing the ALA more frequently and

see if you don't get a reduction in the obsessiveness, say, every 2 hours during

the day and every 3 at night.

This obsession with objects is as I said previously is a symptom of Asperger's

and it should fade with time. I have heard Andy say that chelation will bring

the most troublesome symptom to the forefront and I would say that that is what

you are seeing here.

We go in and out of this. Right now it is pretty high. I am

actually wondering whether it isn't strep rearing its head again. I

have asked his doc to Rx a trial of antibiotics (we had strep early

this year and the amoxi brought this repetiveness down very, very

noticeably). Assuming I get the Rx, ask again in a few days and I

will let you know how we are doing. BTW, my son is a drains, trees,

railroad tracks kiddo who loves throwing stuff down holes. I was

very happy to find my work in the laudry pile in the basement this

morning..... And lately, he has quite a foot fetish. It is driving

me completely crazy.

You're welcome Mommy! Honestly, to me this sounds like normal behavior for most

four year old boys, just slightly amplified by his sensory discoveries. Think

Huckelberry Finn and Tom Sawyer! My NT son used to collect bits of metal that

were run over by cars, rocks, and printed junk mail which he folded and called

his, " buisness " . If it were my child, I'd be really encouraged. : )

At my house, obsessions were almost always viral.
