Has he been drinking tons of carrot juice? That can also cause a jaundiced

appearance. But it won't cause the whites of his eyes to yellow, which

liver problems would. So if he's been drinking lots of carrot juice and the

whites of his eyes are bright white, perhaps you could stop the carrot juice

and see what happens. Otherwise, I would certainly get his liver function

tested.

Was he on any drugs that might compromise liver function?

[ ] Need advice - child's skin has yellow color

Listmates,

I need your advice. My son, , age 9, got sick approximately 3 weeks

ago. Stomach hurt for a few days, ended up vomiting for 24 hours, very

fatigued and took a couple more days to recover completely. We noticed

that

his coloring has never improved since then. He has a pale yellow color to

his skin. He appears to feel okay but I need some advice on what to do

next.

I started him on Milk Thistle but was wondering if I should get his liver

function tested.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I would recommend some basic bloodwork and getting his liver checked

out if his skin is slightly yellow.

I would try milk thistle and taurine for liver support.

My son's skin was yellow colored as an infant, because of improper

carotene conversion. I had to remove all carotenes [orange and green

foods primarily] until I corrected that problem. Selenium was

required, along with vitamin C, zinc, and proper thyroid functioning.

It also required ALA chelation.

You can do that if you want.

Lori, are his eyes yellowish? I think if it's jaundice the eyes are

yellowish. Along with the milk thistle I would do LOTS of C and LOTS of E and

some phosphatidylcholine and B vitamins if you have them. If he drinks milk

and/or eats eggs these can be valuable for the liver, maybe make him a couple

eggnogs per day. Sorry for your trouble, hope your guy feels better soon.

I would add that as much sunlight, full spectrum light (plant

lights), as you can get on him - expose as much skin as possible.

All my older kids were " jaundice babies " & the sunlight was the one

thing that helped the most for them...and a ditto to other

suggestions (especially the milk thistle ;)

wishing you the best

Go to the doctor immediately and see if he feels like he has to rule out

hepatitis - children

often don't get much if any jaundice and it is easy to miss. If he has hepatiis

there are

things to do beyond what the doctor will offer, and important stuff to know

about it too. If

not then maybe the doc can offer some suggestions what else he may have.

Relevant testing the doctor might wish to consider would be a liver function

panel, a blood

count with differential and possibly hepatitis or epstein barr virus screens.

Jaundice is yellow, carotenemia is orange. One can tell the difference by

looking at him.

The eyes don't turn yellow for a while after the skin does.

Andy and others,

Thank you for your advice. His eyes do not have yellow but I will go ahead

and bring him to the doctor tomorrow.

Thanks,

Lori

when you go to the Docotr or if you have already been; and the tests

come back negative; then this condition MAY possibly be PELLAGRA;

What is Pellagra?

Pellagra is a Nutritonal Deficiney caused by a Lack of NiACIN VIT. B3;

NICAIN B3 is a B-Vit. found in most B-Compolex or as a single Vitamin.

(Niacin B3 is used to " lower cholesterol;

....

Does your child have any of these symtpons:

" yellow skin; dark patches; esp. on the inside of hte kenes or

elbows; rash of any type; peeling lips; rash on face; this could be

Pellagra

the good news is ; this conditon can be reveresed IF Pellagra; with

Niacin Vit. B3 talbets; you can ask your doc. for the proper am't.

so if test negarive; ask Doc; could this be a Niacin B3 Deficiiney ?
