Guest guest
One of the most corrosive parts of the public school religion is the belief that real knowledge and understanding is necessarily dispassionate and discussed without emotion. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. We all go through life simply accepting things and the way they are as 'right.' We buy into the perceived social order - the way things are suppoosed to be. In order to understand the way things truly are, we need to question things we accept. This is necessarily distressing. Most people experience and express a lot of emotion during this process. If you look in the archives, you'll see many many instances of people expressing a lot of negative emotion at me. I personally find this very uncomfortable and am by nature a calm, quiet person. However I never objected to the level of emotion but rather simply kept taking about fact and logic. Most people can not change their minds about any meaningful issue without a lot of emotion. Emotion, and usually its expression, is an essential part of change, growth, and understanding. I think this has been made adequately clear, again, with the discussion of public education. Depending on which part of the audience you are trying to reach, either expressing this emotion or controlling it and presenting logic is best - generally some amount of mix and match is what happens and what works. Of course you are all very familiar with this in another context - how emotional people become if you start talking to them about how doctors make their living poisoning babies. If we stick to the rule that legitimate discussion should not be emotional it becomes impossible to convince doctors that they should stop poisoning babies. I do not accept the dogma of the public school bureaucracy that all legitimate knowledge is dispassionate, and can only be discussed dispassionately. I think this is very evil and truly corrodes the fabric of society. Andy
