Guest guest
The Veterans Hospital has cut Joe. We told them last Wed, the same day that they told us his cancer had returned, that Joe was using alternative treatments. The day before this appointment I called anonymously to VA and spoke with a Patient Advocate voicing our concern that if we told the VA doctors that Joe had chosen alternative treatments we feared they would drop him. We were ASSURED that our fears were unfounded. We were told that many seek medical care outside of VA and return to VA for that which they find cost prohibitive. The patient advocate even told us that by not telling Joe's doctors what he was doing that we'd put those doctors at risk. That as long as we were candid with them, they'd be safe and would be in a better position to assist Joe once they had the full picture of what he was doing. Well the very next day at that appointment last Wednesday we told his ENT surgeon that he was using alternative treatments and didn't want chemo or radiation and that Joe wanted to try and reduce the tumors size before surgery was even necessary. The surgeon called her boss in the room and told her Joe was using alternatives. That woman put her hand on her hip and stated, " Alternative treatments don't work. " My response was, " how dare you " and Joe and I left. I called the head honcho at VA today thinking that surely they'd still help Joe...that they'd continue to give him the blood tests and CT Scans so that we'd have something to gauge his progress. I told him that we needed them to look down his throat before surgery to see if surgery was still necessary...to see if Joe succeeded in reducing/eliminating the tumor. His response? " I'm sorry, there are other patients waiting for the camera who are following the doctors advice. If your husband is unwilling to do what we think is best for him, there's nothing we can do for him. " I was in tears at this point and asked, " surely you will look down his throat for us in a week or so so that we could know if what Joe's doing is working or no. " He said no and said he had to go. So VA cut Joe loose because he's using alternative treatments! We have no way to get the blood tests or CT Scans now to monitor Joe's progress. More critical, we have no way to get access to that camera that could look down into Joe's throat to see if the tumor has either not grown or been reduced in size. So here in the USA it's either...have alot of money to be able to shop around for a physician who is open to complimentary/alternative treatment or... it's their way (allopathy) or the highway. They call themselves healers. I'm heartbroken. VA is all we had to get the blood tests, that camera etc to monitor Joe. With no money and no health insurance we are....more alone than we were before telling them. We were so happy that we thought we could be candid with his doctors at VA. We were assured by the patient advocate that no harm would come from telling them and that, in fact, much good would come from it. And we lost it. So....I'm feeling a little heartbroken today. How could they do this?? ((Everyone on this list)) --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
What about taking an AMAS test to following the progress of Joe's cancer? Get on the web and type in AMAS and there should be some information on it. If you decide to do it, let me know because it is very involved and not a lot of diagnostic places know or understand how to do it. Also, there is another test called thermagram. That senses the heat in your body. Cancer is hotter than your body. I could put you in touch with a certified thermagram center if you're interested. Both these tests are not invasive and don't cost a lot of money. The AMAS test is $135, but by the time you buy the dry ice and ship overnight is costs around $200. I'm trying to find other ways of monitoring my cancer. It's rediculous how much the allopathic doctors charge for some of these tests. Good Luck! Guest guest
I read this with great interest because I am in a similar position. I refused the treatments that the local VA offered and went the alternative way, informing them out the outset of my decision. I further requested " observation-only " treatment and they had no problem with that. Although they disagreed with my decision, everyone (with two exceptions so far) has been and is extremely supportive. The fact that am still around three years after they gave me less than a year to live if I did not accept surgery and radiation is a source of amazement to them. During one appointment about a year ago, the Oncology NP gave me the results of the tests that had just been run and said " I don't know what you're doing but keep it up. " I gave him the URL to my Cancer Journal, something that I haven't been keeping up very well lately, and said that it is all there. I never asked if he had checked it out. >The Veterans Hospital has cut Joe. We told them last Wed, the same day that >they told us his cancer had returned, that Joe was using alternative >treatments. Guest guest
i would go back to the patient advocate and sobbingly tell the whole story and get her to stick her neck out for you. this was all based on her advice. also, look into what other programs your state offers, i'm getting tons of help from maine, with no insurance. virginia At 08:23 AM 1/21/2004 -0500, you wrote: >The Veterans Hospital has cut Joe.
