For those reading the piece on PEACE THAT PASSES UNDERSTANDING and wondering why they are affected by troubles, habits, and a host of other things spoken of, do not become depressed that you cannot seem to handle the advice that Big Elk, Marshall, or Paramahansa Yogananda offer. You are the norm ,unfortunately, and another example of being simply human. When the man in the white coat gives you the news about cancer, when a loved one is torn from your presence, then, then you realize you are human and while there are many good points for overcoming in that advice given, I find these kinds of tales a bit simplistic. The overcoming is not simplistic but challenging, requiring a lot of effort. Some do it through religion, others through mediation and others with help from friends and loved ones and some with professional help.... and most...............with time. Joe C. I know when the doctor told me the great news I was about to die, I asked him if there was anything I could do to help him as he was taking it harder than I was. That kind of freaked him out. He still thinks I nuts, I am sure. He is one of those I left in the dust. What I have discovered with most people and dealing with life - threatening situations is that they generally do not handle it very well. Death always comes to someone else. Same reason wars are fought by youngsters, it is always someone else who dies. I will admit that I was not real impressed with the concept, but it really did not do me in. It actually made me feel alive for the first time in many years. As I drove home that afternoon from the doctor's office, there were so many things I had never really paid attention to that now had some meaning. Beauty was all around me and it really took this knock on the side of the head to see it. Never again will something as wonderful as the world around me go unnoticed. The actual verses that this particular Biblical quote come from are found in ians 4:6,7,8. In the NIV, it reads: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Simple parapharase: " Worry about nothing, pray about everything. " Really does work. That is one of the reasons I could focus on research rather than worrying about only having a couple of months left to live. One should never beat oneself up because one cannot at a particular point in time fully live it. One has to do the best one can. These ideas may be helpful in doing so. It is human to be affected by troubles. But if one can step back from them a little, one may be better able to deal with them. As the saying goes, " Pray as if everything depends on God. " The above is not simplistic at all and when part of the original 'warm and fuzzy' sayings, makes them worthwhile and practical. We surely need to 'step back from them a little' or the misery will consume us in a worse fashion than the troubles causing the misery. Joe C. Guest guest Posted May 4, 2006 Report Share Posted May 4, 2006 Bruce, 6 years ago in June a highly regarded (by those who practice medicine) oncologist told me I had 2 years to live and said he would not give me chemo except to relieve me when it got bad. I told him that all I had ever intended for him to do was monitor my progress. A year ago in Jan. I was able to figure out how old he was at the time. 53.
